Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2020 Posted December 14, 2020 Recruit Trevor Bauer - Just make a decision already lol
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2020 Posted December 14, 2020 The more information that comes out, I truly feel the Jays will be sorely disappointed in FA this year. Maybe the Jays can win out with on the Koreans or Japanese, which to me will be big disappointment. However, I really don't see any of the top tier going to the Jays. I think our route is trade, and we should set our mindset accordingly.

I would be really happy if we got both of them (and made a few additional moves as well...)
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2020 Posted December 14, 2020 So they are talking about a possible Blake Snell trade on MLB radio with a couple former GMs and baseball insiders. A few quick bullet points. Adel from the Angels, doesn’t do it. Rays would want young pitching coming back in any deal, OFs are a dime a dozen. Blue Jays package/trade concept: Would be something like: Groshans, Danny Jansen and Manoha for Snell and Margot to play CF. Or substitute Zeuch for one of the position players..

I would be really happy if we got both of them (and made a few additional moves as well...) If that is all we got with all the off season build up, I think a big disappointment. Those guys are not moving the needle with fan excitement/ticket sales if a normal season or elevating significantly our chances for the playoffs.

Signing both of them would be risky in terms of projecting performance, they could both be good or both be busts, but the SP market after Bauer is pretty much riddled with risks (health/performance) and the non-SS infield market isn't that much better.

My point was in reference to FAs... I then said I think we need to go the trade route. We came into the off season talking about the legit possibility of two of the big FAs, like a Bauer and Springer, or a Bauer and Brantley, or JT ect, etc.. In the context of what was being put put by the Jays FO and some in the media, IMO the Asian guys would be a huge disappointment. I think we will need to go trade route which could still lead to an exiting off season. Of course nothing has happened yet, so maybe I will be pleasantly surprised and wrong. Wait - so someone on MLB radio suggested we could give them Zeuch instead of Groshans or Jansen? Yikes. No Christmas bonus for him.
The Iceman Verified Member Posted December 14, 2020 Posted December 14, 2020 I am thinking Tanaka will be the bargain #2-3 type starter that nobody seems too interested in. I would be very happy with him added to our starting 5.

They're just waiting it out in hopes of getting a better offer from their preferred destination. Some might just take a 1 year deal instead of a long term deal from the Jays in hopes there's more money next year Could just be my Jays paranoia speaking here lol.

The Iceman Verified Member Posted December 14, 2020 Posted December 14, 2020 Could Thomas Hatch make the team as a SP in 2021? He had 3 seasons in the minors with over 25 starts. Seems very well suited to being a SP.

Seems very well suited to being a SP. I hope that's not the plan. Effective fastball that sits 96 in relief, and likely less as a starter. Very good changeup. Slider that's a work in progress. Spotty command. Seems like his value will be as a fastball/changeup multi-inning guy out of the pen. I don't think he has the talent to be a starter that a contending team is content with.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 15, 2020 Posted December 15, 2020 Looks like the market for Realmuto is going to move pretty slowly:
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 15, 2020 Posted December 15, 2020 (edited) Yeah. Everyone seems to think Realmuto will wait and wait. Springer amd Bauer may sign quite soon Edited December 15, 2020 by G-Snarls

Bradley, 30, is coming off a season in which he posted a 118 OPS+, his best since 2016. @MLB
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2020 Posted December 15, 2020 MLB radio guys are saying the Yankees first SP target, if Bauer doesn't sign with them is Sugano. They prefer Sugano over Tanaka... Jays will have some bigtime competition...

From all reports, they were struggling enough to keep DJL and weren't going after any expensive pitching talent.

His defense would be huge, basically making him a slightly better Pillar for us across the board. Although signing him pushes out one of our current OFs. Feel like this move only happens with a follow up trade (Lindor?).

From all reports, they were struggling enough to keep DJL and weren't going after any expensive pitching talent. Well, they could just want to drive up the prices of the FA's especially not knowing how the next cpl of yrs will be looking after Covid. We've seen some "big market teams" starting to have firesales on some of their players. Having said that NYC has been hard hit and Im sure some of the Yankee sponsors are hurting and some may have "opt-outs" in the contracts!

From all reports, they were struggling enough to keep DJL and weren't going after any expensive pitching talent. We really want DJL to sign with the Yankees. If he does NOT, they will use that money elsewhere that gets in our lanes and ALSO, they don't believe in Torres at SS. They will shift Torres to 2b and get in the trade market for a Lindor/Story etc... That is also not good for us.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 15, 2020 Posted December 15, 2020 It's worth noting that none of the top free agents this year (Springer Bauer, Realmuto) are Scott Boras clients

I dunno though. From what I've heard/read, the Yankees aren't going to be very active if/when they sign DJ. They lost a lot of money due to Covid and don't want to increase payroll by too much. So I'd be surprised if they signed anyone significant before DJ is signed. They want to bring him back.

He'd be a really good stopgap option in CF. There will likely be real competition for him, though.
