Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 They need the help in the pen, and this would accomplish that without adding payroll. It seems to me it fills the biggest need for both teams. You'd have to be 100% sure that you could sign Betances before this is something you even think of possibly considering...
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 You'd have to be 100% sure that you could sign Betances before this is something you even think of possibly considering... Yeah, for sure. I think it would make sense for everyone concerned though. It'll be interesting. I get the feeling there's some dominoes yet to fall. Rogers probably isn't happy with the drop in ratings, and if the path is there to be fairly competitive without changing the plan for the future ...
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 The best part is that the front office is getting praised for spending but the payroll right now is projected to be $16M less than last year. Essentially the amount they paid players to play with other teams, they are now paying to players to play for the Jays.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 Guys, what is your take on Fisher? Think he may amount to something? Solid 4th OF is the floor.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 Guys, what is your take on Fisher? Think he may amount to something? Has power, draws walks, good speed, hits from the left side, and is a former top prospect. Not impossible to see him turn into something if they can help him stop hitting grounders and make more contact but he needs work.

Derek Fisher's floor is worse than a 4th OF. For a fast and toolsy OF prospect he has not been a particularly good baserunner in his MLB career and he has only been a +5 OF per 150 games while playing mostly LF. Compare that to someone like Jake Marisnick, who does have a legit 4th OF floor, and Fisher is starting from a big deficit. I think he either hits enough to be a starter or a platoon outfielder, or he might not be a major leaguer. Of course the defense and/or baserunning could improve... but I think he'll live or die on the patience and power as carrying tools. I think his most likely outcome is a replacement level, zero WAR career.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 That'd be kinda a weird deal for the Jays to consider... Our bullpen is inarguably our weakest spot, dealing from there for a moderate upgrade to the OF for 1 year doesn't really do anything for me. Unless you see something in Chargois that I'm not seeing... Not sure about this statement, especially if the Jays do add Price (or another SP) and Pearson is in the rotation some time in 2020. All that excess SP depth will migrate to the pen. Meanwhile the OF is kinda okay offensively and ranging from below average to brutal defensively.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 Close the books on AA. not quite. Two more years of paying Tulo. $14M this year and $4M next
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 Guys, what is your take on Fisher? Think he may amount to something? Has some upside but he probably sucks. Would not be upset if they got a legit CF and got rid of him.

Jays OF is a hot stinky mess right now. Defense is horrible and OBP is not good
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 I'm shocked Puig hasn't signed yet. Would love to see him on the Jays!

I mean an average CF and an exceptional RF. People are too quick to jump on small samples of extremely variable statistics.
Cbert Verified Member Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 If the Jays look to free agency for an outfielder, should Ozuna be the guy they look at? Or is he going to get a ridiculous contract along with the draft pick loss?
Maico450 Verified Member Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 Guys, what is your take on Fisher? Think he may amount to something? He seems to be overmatched in the outfield. From my observations, he is going to have to improve dramatically to hold an OF job. He is not remotely close to a 4th OF, as most 4th OF can at least catch the ball. He shows some pop as evidenced by his HR ability, however time will tell if he can maintain that, and achieve a decent BA and OBP? At this time I am not impressed, and doubt he will become a starting MLB player. He just has too long of a ways to go, in too many areas.

There must be something we don't know.

There must be something we don't know. I mean outside of 2017, he's about a 110 wRC+ guy with OK defense in LF. I don't see what the big fuss over him is. I'm not even sure he's a significant upgrade over Grichuk or Gurriel for me. I'd rather target a CFers and flank him with those 2 - letting Teo platoon at 1st and DH with Fisher as our 4th OFer.

Excellent walk and K rates, and last year he was 7th in the league in hard hit percentage. Other guys around him? Harper, Donaldson, Bellinger, Goldy, Springer, Alonso, Trout ... actually, pretty much everyone who is really good, aside from, inexplicably, Odor. Worse case, you likely get a 2 to 2.5 WAR outfielder. The upside is far greater.

His last two years have been pretty average, but I would hope that brings his price down a bit. Also, isn’t Grichuk a capable centrefielder defensively? Would shifting him there and putting Ozuna in RF not improve our OF situation?

Also, isn’t Grichuk a capable centrefielder defensively? Would shifting him there and putting Ozuna in RF not improve our OF situation? Defensive numbers aren't typically the most reliable, just hard to measure... but Grichuk is SLIGHTLY below average by the numbers. The eye test tells me that he's a good RF and passable CF. Interestingly, last year the numbers showed that Teo was a positive fielder in LF, and also slightly below average in CF. Eye test suggests he's worse than Grichuk at both corners and CF (with the exception of his arm, which is positively Bautistian). LGJ also is slightly below average by the numbers in LF (but just f***ing awful in the infield, though that's heavily skewed by whatever brain farts he was having this year at 2B) Looking at extremely small sample sizes, The numbers show that Fisher is good/excellent in the corners and ghastly in CF, same for Alford. Alford, however, wins the eye test, though I am unabashedly #teamAlford (yes, still.)

EMK19 Verified Member Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 Funny enough, I was just randomly browsing the Korean MLB forum where lot of introduction to Toronto-type posts have been appearing (because besides the three sons and Ken Giles, everyone else seems to be unknown) and I saw a thread named "Toronto Blue Jays - Current state of defense.gif". I could have sworn that I could have predicted its contents before going in and surely enough it had about 4 Fisher moments, 2-3 Vladdy moments and a few Bo moments. For some reason there was no Teoscar ones, but with him the people are more concerned about how someone with his contact-related stats can still be on the team. They want us to get Puig, as he and Ryu had quite a chemistry over at LA. Yeah, we do all wish... Honestly though with Fisher, definitely the hardware tools are there (power, speed) and I do see the upside more on the offensive side of things once he figures out how to make solid contact consistently. Possible solid 4th outfielder isn't out of the questions but there's a lot of work to be done.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 26, 2019 Posted December 26, 2019 I know this won't ever happen but the Jays should just get this Vlad at 3B business over with and sign Josh Donaldson to a 4 year deal. Would take us from a .500 team to legit WC contenders.
