Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2020 Posted September 6, 2020 The best thing about a 37 year old is that he probably only takes a one year deal. It’s a win win. Upgrade on Tellez, good PR move, short term commitment. Edwin was pretty good this year. Don’t be agist. There is essentially no reason not to do it... although Rogers will find $15M reasons not to do it probably. I will not rest until Rowdy Tellez is off. the. f***ing. roster. He is a human symbol of all of the wrong (risk-averse, pussy-assed) decisions the FO could make in the future. If he is on the 2020 roster we all might as well abandon the organization with our fandom. It will be a canary in the coal mine moment. One fat, lumbering, replacement level canary. And we're back to being agist. Taking playing time from Rowdy should be completely irrelevant. It's a wide open roster spot. You're basically saying you'd rather punt it than have Edwin there. Asinine. Worth reading again.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 Worth reading again. Hey, the Blue Jays had an objectively valueless player magically turn into a contributor and you called me a "board heavyweight" so this is a win-win in my books.

It's called player development, FYI. Rowdy is 25, also. His peak yet to come.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2020 Posted September 7, 2020 Rowdy's bat is 9% above league average for his career, equivalent to a full season sample. His K rate, which stabilizes fairly quickly, is 15% this year.

I want Rowdy to be as successful as much as you do. Just not ready to say this is the real him long term yet. This very well could be his coming out party and that would be awesome! But lets pump the breaks before we start pulling up all the old quotes of people doubting him. There has been s*** loads of evidence to question his long term success as well.

Jim's desire to have play Rowdy over an EE had less to do with his belief in Rowdy and more to do with the fact that he doesn't like anyone over 30. In the off season, I was still hopeful Rowdy could progress but I wouldn't have been adverse to bringing in a guy like Edwin on a one year contract. In the off season we still thought Vlad would play 3rd. I still believe EE can turn it around. This year I felt Rowdy looked fitter come summer camp and he just wasn't pulling off near as many pitches. I've always loved his swing. He has great flexibility for a big guy and creates very good angles. The fact that he wasn't striking out near as much and was still hitting lots of fly balls combined with what he did in summer camp was why I said I felt he was going to be good this year despite crappy numbers. He still swung at way too many pitches out of the zone his first month of the season. He just made more contact as he was staying on the ball more. The last couple weeks he's had a much more discipline approach and his swings at pitches outside the zone have decrease a lot. This could just be a stretch where he's locked in and confident, but if he can continue laying off pitches outside the zone he will be an elite power hitter. Regardless BTS' Jabari Blash comp seems comical now.
