saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 Maybe have another one for the irony here. I’m pretty self aware. I know I’m annoying lol.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 So your logic They will deal him for an unfair price because the league will conspire against the Jays. Is this your contention? Because if it is, it's f***ing retarded. Where did I say he was getting moved for less that market value. I'm saying this new threat of extending won't change what that market value is.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 You are placing far more importance on this than is warranted. I don't know if I can overstate how little what Stroman says publicly matters in regards to his trade value. You guys are seriously chicken littling and it's annoying. Cut this s*** out. If teams know the Jays have no intention of extending him, then the only leverage is the 2020 year of control, which is clearly leverage as the Jays can just keep him instead of making a bad trade. My point was that Stroman is saying he's not signing an extension, I think most people know the Jays have no interest in doing so (whether due to Stro's demands or otherwise), so the threat of an extension isn't really a thing. I'm just responding to that quote at face value. At this point, everyone knows he's available and the Jays will take the best offer they get (unless it is dog s***, in which case I hope they just hold on to him). Everything else is just posturing which is typical around this time.

I think the leverage is, if a team tries to use that, say "we have the best pitcher on the market, so f*** you and we'll just deal with one of the other 10 interested teams." I don't know how you guys are coming to the conclusions you're arriving at but it's pretty bizarre.

I don't know how you guys are coming to the conclusions you're arriving at but it's pretty bizarre. I don't think we are disagreeing here. The Jays don't have to trade him, so any team that low balls them will (hopefully) have to up their offer or f*** off. That doesn't mean other teams actually believe the Jays will extend him, and the Jays don't want to be in a position like they were with JD where they have a top asset with one year of control in a market where control is everything. Teams know this as well. So someone is going to bend, either Atkins or the team that acquires Stroman. If Stro has the type of value that Joel Sherman says he does, then we should be in a good spot regardless, but Atkins still has to prove his trading ability.

So the leverage is the same as or was before this report.

Slade Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 They don't "have" to deal Stroman, the guy is literally screaming out he wants an extension and wants to stay in Toronto. With how absolute dog s*** the rotation is with little help on the way they absolutely can sign him to a new deal. I'm very much on the side of hold out to get exactly what you want and if not just extend him. I'm sure there is some posturing there from the Jays but I would in no way rule out an extension. Hell we're paying Grichuk $11 Million for the next 4 years and he's not even good.
AintNoThang Verified Member Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 This is all about the optics. Say if they just aren't getting reasonable offers, and there's no reason to deal just to deal, with the he extra year of control, then it would serve management to say that they're going to try and work on an extension. And either genuinely try and extend or hope for a better deal in the offseason. At least it would minimize public outrage from the casuals. Nothing can hurt from getting that information out.

Optics / posturing yes. I don't have any doubt Stro will be moved for the best package available. They aren't going to take the risk of another JD situation.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 This is the s*** in the industry that needs to change. Thinking that a complete unproven commodity is more valuable than a guy who has been consistently good in the best division in Baseball. If Marcus Stroman was a free agent after this season I get it. But you shouldn’t expect to get a legit #2 starter without giving up one of your best prospects. And teams should stop allowing this to happen by settling for anything less. Buying teams need to pay a premium. One of these teams will give up a top prospect for Stroman and you don’t trade him until they do.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 Give me Kyle Tucker for Stroman any day.
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 What would you guys rather have? Stroman for Tucker + Small piece. Giles for a prospect in the 90-100 range Or Stroman + Giles for Kiriloff + Balazovic Hypothetically.

Giles for a prospect in the 90-100 range Or Stroman + Giles for Kiriloff + Balazovic Hypothetically. The first one easily, but the trade history of elite relievers with control would suggest that the values of Stroman and Giles are fairly similar.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 So I'm confused as to why you guys are even complaining about it. Just pointing out that the Jays new stance of 'we may extend him' changes nothing and is futile.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 Good god, man. Hyphens and commas are not interchangeable. Bruh - I used hyphens all the time (I refer to it as a dash though).

It would piss me off so much, but I'd love to see that happen for Stroman. Hopefully it would mean Pete Walker and whomever else is responsible for Stro's low MLB K/9 would get the can.

Hopefully it would mean Pete Walker and whomever else is responsible for Stro's low MLB K/9 would get the can. The move from the previous team, in the previous year, to the Stros resulted in these K rate jumps: Cole - 8.69 to 12.40 Verlander - 9.57 to 12.20 Morton - 6.70 to 10.00 Miley - 5.58 to 7.40 It's likely he'll get a boost. Don't know what's in the water in Texas, or what they're hiding on their fingers to get that spin rate.
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 Do the Astros really need Stroman though? I mean they are pretty set at SP, no?
Ray Verified Member Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 Do the Astros really need Stroman though? I mean they are pretty set at SP, no? Verlander/Cole is a strong 1-2 punch, but they could use a good #3 in the playoffs besides Miley. It could also be about not wanting to make other AL contenders stronger. Yankees, Twins, and Rays could easily try to get him too.

Plus, they'll get the new and improved Stroman for next year's playoffs. Miley is an impending free agent.
