So sad. Hopefully from natural causes and not related to something that would taint his legacy. Terrible news. Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

“Pass away” is a euphemism for old people and sick people. When a young healthy person bites it you have to say they f***ing died. Source: uncle is a funeral home janitor.

What does this mean?

He didn't "pass away" like some old man with cancer. He had an acute, unexpected death. I find this language vexing.

Passed away and died are synonyms. Just shut the f*** up about it, nobody cares.

It's very unfortunate to see this happen to a good young player in his prime. The Angels have had some terrible luck recently.

Going to have to agree with Grant on this one folks!

I believe Dinger's a linguistic major or something, this s*** stresses him out, no doubt. I feel terrible for his wife and parent's, 27 is far too young.

They’re not synonymous. All passings away are deaths but not all deaths are passings away. I’m sorry you feel you have to be incorrect about this.

What is the lowest age one can be when they die and the term "passed away" is still acceptable?

You can pass away at any age after a long battle with severe illness because that’s what that is.

I'd say the players that died, and their families have had decidedly shittier luck than the Angels.

Ahhh...internet forums...where a post which starts out offering sympathies to a player who died way too soon, turns into a pissing match over semantics.

Dinger is completely in the wrong too, smh.

People discussing which drug he died from is just as obtuse as worrying over who's right in *died* or *passed away*.

How about you dont comment on a thread for once

For the record, and anyone who listens to us knows this is difficult for me, I 100% agree with Dinger about this

Old people pass away

Young people die

The only questionable thing here is the cause of death - if he died in his sleep, the phrase pass away is more acceptable but is mostly done to be extra sensitive.

Seems like a lot of people care, given the hubbub. Looks like you're wrong again, Grant!

Passed away and died are technically synonyms.

Definition and connotation are different things though.

This is actually an important thread in this regard and it should be stickied before it passes away.

My hubby was what you guys would categorize as old, 68 when he DIED, and I can tell you that it pisses me off when people say, he passed away. He didnt quietly drift off as if he was floating away. He DIED as in DEAD.

And I absolutely hate it when I hear that term. but that is just me. But in the end to each his own.

So if a 12yo dies in cancer, or even a 22yo, you couldn’t say passed away?

Pretty much any obituary is going to say passed away. Usually when they’re under 30, if they don’t mention the disease or accident, it’s safe to assume it’s suicide or heroin
