glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 The "Final Boss" is a great nickname, even though he's not going to be in that role over here. Big fan of this signing. He's probably not the beast he was in 2016, but as someone mentioned if he is somewhere in between 2016 and 2017, then he's big time surplus value.
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 I love every move this FO has done this offseason. This guy seems to be a perfect add, could be decent, could be elite and for peanuts and doesn't have a contract that will handcuff this team for years to come. Wow.
flafson Verified Member Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 He's 35, he sucked last year and he already failed to sign with the Rangers for almost the same amount of money because MRI shows elbow inflammation. Seems like high risk, average reward type of signing to me.

Seems like high risk, average reward type of signing to me. For what it's worth, he didn't "suck" last year, he was perfectly average. I feel like that's something important to point out if we're expecting someone to bounce back to some level of their elite performance before - which the Blue Jays certainly will be.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 There aren't too many 'high risk' signings for that little money on a 1 year deal (the money or years IS the risk in a contract sense). He COULD suck, no doubt about it. He's 35 and got bombed by HR's last year. But he COULD be elite. He's one year removed from a 2.13 FIP season where he only gave up 0.53 HR/9. I think more likely he's in the middle, which means he's a serviceable BP arm on a short term for almost no money. Reward is high (elite BP for little cash), risk is low (he sucks and you cut your losses for $2M)

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 What's high risk about a 1 year deal for 2 million? Low risk is giving the money to me. In fact, zero risk that I'll provide any value to the team.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 A few people seem to be confused here, a one year deal for 2 million bucks is by definition low risk. If he sucks the team loses a paltry amount of money. That isn't very risky. It's a low risk, medium reward signing.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 Reminiscent of the Joe Smith signing last year and could certainly yield similar results. Sign Trevor Cahill to a similar deal and I'll be happy with the offseason bullpen work.

Kind of ridiculous that you even need to explain this. 1 year $2M would be low risk even in hockey where salaries are a fraction the size.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 Let's keep it going...sign Trevor Rosenthal to a 2 year deal, then sign Kevin Siegrist to a minor league deal! Siegrist signed a minor league deal with the Pirates a few days ago
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 Or JP Howell Please no. He looked cooked last season.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 Please no. He looked cooked last season. Pretty sure he meant what Oh could turn into as opposed to Smith. Not a suggestion on who to sign next.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 Pretty sure he meant what Oh could turn into as opposed to Smith. Not a suggestion on who to sign next. Or Franklin Morales, who signed a 1 yr, $2M deal a few years ago.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 Or Franklin Morales, who signed a 1 yr, $2M deal a few years ago. That was a clear mistake right from the start. Very puzzling move.

BTS Community Moderator Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 Did the team need to make a 40-man move to add him?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 Did the team need to make a 40-man move to add him? I think we were at 40 before the signing so yes. I was thinking maybe Dermody?

jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 How was Oh average last year? He couldnt keep the ball out of the air at all

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 How was Oh average last year? He couldnt keep the ball out of the air at all His run indicator stats were all average. ERA-, FIP-, SIERA, his xFIP was bloated which could be a red flag but that's also a factor of him giving up so many flyballs and xFIP penalizes extreme flyball pitchers. I don't think giving up a bunch of flyballs is inherently bad as long as many of those balls in the air are weakly hit ala Marco Estrada and his pop up rate. Now maybe Oh got really lucky because Busch Stadium is a big park and that likely suppressed his homeruns allowed, but most of his peripherals indicate an average pitcher. He still had a decent K/BB and his SwStr% was also about average for relievers. It's not like he got f***ing destroyed last season.

His velocity also remained the same as it was in 2016...his fastball was still effective, but he his offspeed stuff (primarily his slider) was really bad last year. Maybe he was tipping his pitches? Let's hope he finds the feel for it again this year.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 So releasing Zeke means the jays save 1.6 mil of his 1.9 mil...and Oh cost us 2 mil, so for the most part our payroll space/room has hardly changed. Loving me Shapiro/Atkins.
devo Verified Member Posted February 28, 2018 Posted February 28, 2018 Oh's deal is $1.75 million in 2018, with a $2.5-million club option for 2019 (with a $250,000 buyout) that will automatically vest if Oh makes 70 appearances. Makes this deal even better.
