Colby has always been one of my favorite players. I loved his effortless left handed power and the fact he stayed true to his roots. His 2013 season was probably my favorite individual season to follow.

Hopefully he steps away and doesn't feel the need to come back. It doesn't seem like he's really all that interested in playing.

Tldr- do what makes you happy, not what you think somebody else wants you to do.

It's amazing to me that he's willing to turn down so much money when his window to earn it is so limited. At 31 and still playing pretty well, there's probably another 15-20M out there for him if he grinds away for 4 more years. I don't begrudge him the fact that he's leaving, but he must really be unhappy to walk away from 20M given that his earning potential evaporates in about 5 years.

Panda will surely go back to the Giants now.

Couldn't have gone much worse for the Red Sox. Travis Shaw currently at 2.8 WAR for the Brewers too.

Terrible outcome for the Sox. Shaw's killing it.

He already made $44.4 million. I'm sure he's comfortable (unless he's terrible with money).

This. He probably struggled through and forced himself to make it this far. Maybe he knew he could get a big payday and didn't want to committ to a long contract when he has no interest in playing. Atleast try and finish the year though, kinda silly.

Or maybe he's leaving at his peak to hit the FA market so he can't decline any more this year :D

Still a chance to increase his net worth by probably close to 50%. $15-20M for four years when you've only made $44.4M is still no joke. He must be really unhappy playing ball.

Wow, if things couldn't any worse for the Yankees.. losing Pineda hurts, as it thins their already thin rotation depth and forces Cessa into the rotation.. hurting the bullpen.

Basically, it forces the Yankees to start looking for controllable pitchers on the trade market for this season and the next few.. losing Pineda 3 months early to a significant injury puts serious pressure on the team, and may basically give Boston free rein to run away with the AL East, and Tampa and a AL Central, West (and unlikely, but not of the question, the Blue Jays) to steal the 2nd wild card..

Didn't he say a couple years ago that he was going to retire early because he did not have the passion to play the game anymore. I swear i heard that somewhere.

Financially, he's set for life, and clearly this profession makes him deeply unfulfilled. He'll be much happier riding fourwheelers and fishing for the rest of his days, living modestly on his small fortune. I'm happy for him.

I remember him saying his dad rode him pretty hard and that baseball has been a full-time job for him since he was a little kid. He's been burnt out on it for a long time.

Yep. Hell, I'd quit my job for like $1M, no problem, and I can't even live off that for 20 years. If I had his money, there's no way I'd do a job I don't love.

I have no concept of what it's like to already have like $20M in net worth or whatever he has, but it's hard to imagine me hating a job so much that I wouldn't slog through another few years to increase that by 50%.

The only difference between Rasmus and Lawrie is that at least Rasmus is not in denial as to where his career stands.

And the fact that Colby still has some value to him and Lawrie is about as useful as tits on a bull.

I mean if Colby stuck it out he could likely get another 3M next season.

Happiness is more important than money. If he already has a house and financial security (which he only wouldn't have if he's terrible with money) why be unhappy for 2 years?

Is an extra $10-20 million going to change his life? Probably not. However, early retirement would change his life if he's not happy working.

Wtf happened to Sammy Sosa, he looks like a ghoul!

Sammy Sosa's lightened skin tone sparks internet uproar

https://www.thescore.com/news/1332959

(via http://thesco.re/theScore_app )

"Sosa, whose pigmentation has gotten progressively lighter since he retired from baseball a decade ago, said in 2009 that the change in color is the result of a cosmetic cream he uses on his face before going to sleep."

If this is true (and I doubt it is) - seeing him with his shirt off would be really freaky.

Following in the footsteps of MJ is not a good look for anyone. He looks like death.

This also reminds me of the ongoing discussion of free agents going for the biggest payday instead of taking a fair offer from their current (or another) team where they may feel more comfortable playing. Look at how going to Boston for the big bucks has backfired on the likes of Crawford, Price, Sandoval (just DFA'ed). Price to the Cards and Sandoval staying with the Giants (I recall they made him a pretty good offer) probably would have worked out so much better for these guys. Crawford, who knows, I guess it was more the injuries than anything but the Boston pressure cooker likely played a role in his career meltdown.

Pretty sure Sandoval actually turned down more money from the Giants(by only a couple million) because he didn't get a long with someone in managment.

This is true, but it's also important to recognize that when players sign deals they are also trying to make sure that future players also benefit financially from deals they sign. It's important for each player to sign for as much as they can to ensure a fair split of revenues between players and owners.

Interesting. I vaguely recall him being insulted by their preliminary contract offers, complaining that they didn't appreciate his contributions to the championship runs. But like how Ortiz had his issues with Red Sox management but was able to set it aside, probably Sandoval should have done the same. Oh well, he will get his money anyway and probably a chance to rejuvenate his career elsewhere.

Word is Sonny Gray scratched from scheduled start with no apparent reason - could be a trade about to be finalized (rumor is Cubs are after him).
