Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 If the money makes sense, it would be awesome for JB to retire a BJ. He actually makes more sense than EE at this point (cheaper, less years on contract, can play OF) EE played some LF in 2015. Didn't look out of place. Its possible he's a better OF than JB, crazy as it seems. EE had a great but inaccurate arm as a 3B.
Driveof85 Verified Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 I'm fine with EE walking. I feel good about Pearce/Smoak. It's JB I want back. This 1 through 9 lineup would have the potential to hit 20 HR each. Pillar is a stretch, I know, but him being healthy and more experienced, who knows.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Barely related: Who is the biggest assface when it comes to burning a bridge of money in hopes of finding more elsewhere and then screwing it all up? That distinction would belong to none other than Juan Gonzalez. He turned down an 8 year, 160 million dollar extension with the Tigers back in 2000. He went on to make about $45 million from that point on, leaving $115 million on the table.

Experience hasn't changed Pillar's approach at all. His pitch selection remains awful. He swings at everything. His lead off experiment was a predictable bust. The Board had a collective LOL against TEX in the playoffs. He actually yanked a 95 MPH FB a foot high and in over the LF wall off of Darvish. I still cant believe that one. Once a hacker always a hacker?
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Edwin in LF was an experiment they quickly abandoned for a reason lol

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 There isn't a chance in hell of EE playing LF for anyone. And I never suggested that. Simply comparing EE vs JB as an OF. They aren't as far off as one might think. Neither belongs in a MLB OF.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 With the Jays striking out on Fowler and Bautista striking out with every other team, a reunion is starting to make sense for both sides even though that wasn't what either side wanted.

Oh thank God you're alive! Yeah I think it's pretty much destined to happen at this point.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Knowing what he knows now, Bautista probably accepts the QO
Governator Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Knowing what he knows now, Bautista probably accepts the QO Why? His value might only sink further next year and there's still a good chance he signs for 3x$17 which is right around what he was expected to get. The only thing that's hurt is is ego, he's really better off getting as much guaranteed $ as he can right now as opposed to rolling the dice trying to rebuild value for the FA market at age 37.

Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 I think our FO really wants 3 picks in the 1st round. I don't think Bautista is coming back unless it's insane value. I see problems with this logic and don't really think the front office thinks this way. Bourn cost Cleveland a 1st rounder because they thought they were getting tremendous value with the contract.

george09 Verified Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Does anyone know if Bautista even wants to come back? I know EE's first choice was the Jays and he wanted to come back but haven't heard anything about Jose saying we are his first choice and that he wants to return ect. Besides the "Unfinished business" thing. Plus didn't he tell the Red Sox he wanted to play for them? If management really want Bautista back they would've signed him by now, but i still don't think he's coming back.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 With this being the last year teams get a 1st round comp pick perhaps they value it more. Probably, but they shouldn't. Remember we gave a pick and 85 million dollars to Russell Martin, he's already earned all of that digital paper in my books.

His lead off experiment was a predictable bust. That's not true. Pillar takes plenty of pitches...right down the middle of the plate. Seriously though, he has absolutely no approach. He just goes up there guessing. He'll take pitch 1 right down the middle and then swing at pitch 2 that's 2+ feet off the plate. But I still love the guy. He still provides pretty big value with his defense, speed and occassional ability to run into a pitch. He's just frustrating as hell to watch hit. If he some how learned how to take a few more walks (better pitch selection/batter's eye) he would be close to elite (overall) for a CF.

I don't know. They were willing to lose a pick for Fowler. Sure they'll gladly take 3 picks in the 1st round, but if Bautista is signable and clearly the best player they can realistically get within budget, then they might be willing to sacrifice one of those picks as long as the terms make sense. He's still a projected 3 war player next season so the upgrade would be there. Of course, there might be bad blood on both sides, and I could be Jose being the type whose ego would get in the way of certain things. I still see it happening if they can't sign/trade for a better alternative.

Driveof85 Verified Member Posted December 11, 2016 Posted December 11, 2016 Does anyone else feel that maybe other FAs/players might be unimpressed with the way the current regime has treated two of its icons who have done so much to put Toronto back on the map? They've lost out on pretty much everyone they've targeted and Cecil and Benoit have left. Are Shapiro and Atkins coming across as douchebags?

No joke, I actually know someone who knows Dexter Fowler's barber and he said this was a relevant factor. Stro and Bautista talked to Dex at the white party they were all at a week ago and the feeling Dex got was that Toronto's front office is pretty cold and ambivalent about the players. That's just what I heard through the grape vine.
