BTS Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 I am talking about his character. People here hate it and they are letting it affect their decision on whether they would bring him back. Not much different than Dan Duquette who we all laughed at yesterday. Duquette is a professional though. It's his job to field a winning team. There's no best way to be a fan.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 I'm so neutral about Bautista, it's really odd. Probably because I was set on seeing Fowler penciled in at the top of the line up from everyone playing fantasy GM but Bautista as plan B shouldn't be a bad thing either. He's a prime bounce back candidate available on another team friendly salary, we should be excited. Can someone pull down douchey rankings from fangraphs? I found him to be less douchey at the plate this year based on eye test. I think a healthy Bautista on a multiyear deal (no pressure in trying to impress to get a contract) puts up a better OBP and SLG than Fowler at least for next season. The problem is that it ends there. Negative value on the bases and in the field, that's why I'd love him at DH. Fowler's got great speed and a great glove to go with a great bat. Does anyone know how much our payroll has went up to as of the last few signings? I wonder how much we have left to spend, I hope that we can add 2 of Bautista/Edwin/Fowler, but I think that's a long shot now. Good thing Morales and Pearce only cost us $17M

Unless the guy is skirting around the law routinely then I don't much care for character judgments. When he gets busted for DUIs or assaults then talk to me. Though I think leaving Goins with the bill in the media after that playoff error was a dick move. I don't remember if that's exactly how it played out though.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Jose Bautista is not a bad Plan B option if Dexter Fowler can't be signed. Signing both I think would be ideal, since it would only cost money instead of prospects. I think if the Jays fail to sign Fowler, don't retain one of Bautista or EE, and fail to make a big trade for Adam Eaton etc., that would be a huge PR disaster. They need to at least sign one of those players. Lineup with Fowler & Bautista would be pretty darn good: RF Fowler 3B Donaldson LF/DH Bautista SS Tulowitzki 1B/DH Morales 1B/DH/LF Pearce 2B Travis C Martin CF Pillar If they can't sign Fowler, then I hope they could trade for either Adam Eaton or Jarrod Dyson.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Author Posted December 7, 2016 I can only speak for myself, but there have just been too many incidents of him acting like an arrogant POS. I haven't been using this as my primary excuse for disliking Bautista because there are several valid statistical arguments, but I'm gonna be honest... the main reason that I don't want Bautista back is because of that f***ing "shaking in your boots" comment. I actually hate that guy now for how uncomfortable he made my ride home after I heard those comments on the radio. It was the most "parent has to apologize and feel miserable because their stupid f***ing child just broke your $1200 vase" feeling I've had watching sports. Just made it embarrassing and uncomfortable to be a Blue Jays fan. Bautista is no longer good enough to where I can overlook what a douchebag and media nightmare he is. Because of him, the two biggest Blue Jays stories from this post season were the "circumstances" conspiracy theory and the "shaking in his boots" comment, both of which came from the same moron idiot. I can understand the people that do still love him or still see statistical merit in bringing him back; I don't deny that he still has some elite skills that can carry him to a pretty good season if he stays healthy. I just personally don't want to see Jose Bautista on my TV screen anymore.

I'm really warming to the idea of Jarrod Dyson. He's a very good player, and a lot of fun to watch. Might be amenable to an extension too, as he's never been a full-time player and might find guaranteed money attractive. Downside would be that Gibby will almost certainly hit him first in the order.

I don't Hate him, I do not want him at that kinda money or term! Plus it really seems we are overpaying when no other fish are biting! Let him Stew for awhile and circle back in a months time if he is still there and needed.

I don't mind Bautista playing 50-60 games in LF, 50-60 games at 1B and the rest at DH. Obviously the less time he's in the outfield, the better.

fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Payroll is a hair over 133 if Pearce makes ~6.25 in 2016. Thanks! Man, Fowler is seeking $18AAV (we apperently offered $15AAV), Edwin looks to be around $20AAV, and Bautista looks to be around $16AAV. Adding Fowler only: $131M payroll Adding Edwin only: $133M payroll Adding Bautista only: $129M payroll Adding Fowler + Edwin: $151M Adding Fowler + Bautista: $147M Adding Bautista + Edwin: $149M With our payroll being $138M, even with an increase we're only looking at one of those 3 players then correct? Realistically speaking, of course
Governator Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Shapiro is next on Jeff Blair show if anyone wants to tune in. http://www.sportsnet.ca/590/

I just personally don't want to see Jose Bautista on my TV screen anymore. Yeah. There have been so many cringey comments over the years that it's tough to remember them all. His attempts to use fan support to strong-arm the front office in contract negotiations before the season were pathetic. I'm still convinced that Shapiro leaked the 6/180 rumour to put him in his place.

Probably. It would either be him or Travis as leadoff. Seems like the Royals really want to get rid of him and that they don't appreciate his true value. What do you think it would cost to acquire him? I agree he can be signed to a team-friendly extension (something in the range of 2/12M).

You could be right, I think coming back with a chip on his shoulder will be something to help motivate him and he's always been elite. Imagine if he gets (like edwin) more games off the field than on the field? I think he can really zone in and have a monster year next year. They should be able to backload a contract to make that happen though after hearing Atkins on Jeff Blair Show this morning I think the ship has sailed on Edwin and I kind of doubt Fowler is coming down for us after speaking with Bautista. I wouldn't want to backload because of that 2019 FA class, I'd rather spend more now and frontload it. Also forgot, we need to extend Donaldson, unless FO is keen on just dealing him

fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 I think extending JD is a pipe dream. Do you mean a pipe dream because JD won't talk or because the Jays aren't interested?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Duquette is a professional though. It's his job to field a winning team. There's no best way to be a fan. Yeah that is true it's not entirely fair to compare the two. But this board seems to view things through the valuation of players, much like GM's do. Seems like almost all of us put our GM-hat on almost all the time. So even though Duquette is a professional and this board is comprised of fans, there is IMO at least a little bit of disconnect with people laughing at Duquette in one thread and in another saying they want Bautista gone because they don't like him.
Governator Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Do you mean a pipe dream because JD won't talk or because the Jays aren't interested? Because I don't see the Jays handing out a Cabrera like contract for a player's 32-42 years.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Because I don't see the Jays handing out a Cabrera like contract for a player's 32-42 years. True! But then again for me, I didn't expect them to offer a good/fair value contract to Edwin... which they did (and according to reports no one is willing to go 1 less year/same AAV as our offer so we technically had the best offer for him) Who knows! This FO is exciting because I have no idea what direction they're going. Not like the AA tenure where if the player was going to command anywhere near 5 years we'd rule out
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Fun fact. Bautista was a better hitter than Morales last year Fun fact. Bautista will make more than Morales in 2017. Stupid

Not like the AA tenure where if the player was going to command anywhere near 5 years we'd rule out There's good/fair value and then there's stupid money. Nobody likes these gigantic, 10 year contracts approaching $300MM where something small can completely destroy the investment. I can't imagine this FO or even Rogers tying up that kind of money on one player for so long.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Fun fact. Bautista will make more than Morales in 2017. Stupid and why is that stupid?
Governator Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 I might have to change the title back to The Jose Bautista Thread
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 I might have to change the title back to The Jose Bautista Thread He is so damn polarizing. lol I love him. The guy makes so many headlines, both good and bad. Good- Orioles try beaning him and miss. He hits a homer that same AB and proceeds to tell Adam Jones to f*** off the next half inning. Bad- Goes public with his contract negotiations. For a league that lacks star power Bautista is one of the few players who can make headlines so frequently. And he makes them in the US even, I've never seen a Jays player do that.
