Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 Go get the man Joey Votto. Yolo I think we could get him for a reasonable package due to all the money he is still owed
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 I think we could get him for a reasonable package due to all the money he is still owed I love him to be he has a NTC and has repeatedly said he wants to stay with that dumpster fire
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 I agree and I assume that you meant something along the lines of "this is all we need and what we can afford". This rotation lacks a top ace but is much better than the rotation of last year's champion. There's no reason to think the Jays can't slug their way to victory. Its the ever-loved claim "good pitching beats good hitting". Except when it didn't, like in the World Series last year.

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 Good BABIP beats everything. I still don't understand how the Royals lucked their way through the 2015 season and won the World Series. f*** them
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 I still don't understand how the Royals lucked their way through the 2015 season and won the World Series. f*** them Oh I know. It was pretty frustrating but it honestly wasn't a bad strategy to build a team like that if you are running s*** franchise like the Royals in a bad division. They had 5 decent starting pitchers (or at least 5 guys who put up decent years) and elite defense and bullpen. That in itself will put you in contention in the AL Central every year. Offense was merely ok but they don't strike out much and once in the playoffs all you need is 11 wins. Don't strike out for that small stretch of games and it's possible you can BABIP your way through the playoffs. They had so many damn ground ball singles against us it was ridiculous. They also stayed pretty healthy throughout the year. This year the starting pitching has regressed and the lack of elite hitters is rearing it's head. They only have one guy who is hitting significantly better than average (Hosmer) and the rest of them are hovering around average or well below. Yostball can't be helping as the worst hitting regular on the team and perhaps in baseball (Alcides Escobar) has the most AB's for them and is producing a wOBA of .263. lol It would be like Gibby batting Goins leadoff every game. Despite all this they are still getting pretty lucky as they are 3 games above .500 despite a -23 run differential. Pythagorean says they should be 5 games below.
nmrch Verified Member Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 because the division is ridiculously tight, the projections have the Red Sox, Jays and Orioles separated by ~1.5 games. . Just checked again, the top 3 in the AL East is now separated by 0.4 games, that is crazy, this could be the closest 3 way division race in a while. http://www.fangraphs.com/coolstandings.aspx

I think we've got the best team but I also expect the Orioles and Red Sox to make bigger improvements than us. Going to be a close one.

Well ofcourse variance dictates that the end result won't be close to the projections but my point was more in terms of how close the teams were in current talent.

Going to be a close one. Orioles don't have a farm system though. The last couple seasons every time they went for a rental, they got burned, I doubt they try it again.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 I still don't think the Orioles will grab more than a 2nd wildcard. Jays and Redsox will be ahead

Seems like the 2nd and 3rd place finisher for the AL East will duke it out with the Astros for the final WC spot.

The last couple seasons every time they went for a rental, they got burned, I doubt they try it again. Harvey back and throwing 97 yesterday, Bundy pitching well in the majors, Chance Sisco would be the one of the most sought after catchers in the minors (and O's can probably afford to let him go). Trey Mancini has about a dozen people in front of him but stat scouts will know that he can just flat out hit. Jomar Reyes will make scouts drool. Baltimore has players to deal and ones in the right positions. A little insider info...the Rays have inquired about Schwarber's availability.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 Trevor Plouffe is an interesting possibility to fill a hole at 1B/RF if we have money to spend and don't want to use prospect capital. He's in the midst of a rather poor season, but doesn't K a lot and has some power. A real nice bench or platoon piece.

He's a nice pickup to have, better than a rotating door of Lake/Ceciliani out there

He hasn't played the outfield since 2012 and I don't think he's skilled/athletic enough to expect him to play it at an acceptable level. I guess you can platoon him at first and hope for half a win out of him, but I can't really see someone like Pompey being tangibly worse for a lot cheaper if he's healthy enough to contribute.

Based on the way the Org is talking I think Pompey is staying in AAA until September or a full time spot is open. Which is the right thing he still needs to develop, I really don't think his bat would be up to par here
