Do we really want to pay Joey Votto 25million a year for the next 7 seasons?

I'm just throwing out names. From what I heard from Atkins and Shapiro is that they're indicating the budget isn't the issue but the assets to trade is. Now we also know that the FO also doesn't really want big contracts to aging players hence Edwin and Bautista; although you might also make the case that they didn't want to make any big commitments on the roster until they get their feet settled.

Obviously $25M/7 years for Votto is a lot but there's a lot to take into account. Are Bautista and EE coming back next year? Because that alone is salary relief. Also while I see Tulo here for a while because getting a good defensive shortstop with pop is hard to find, if Martin puts up half decent numbers and we make the post season I am 100% convinced Martin will be shopped and traded as a veteran catcher that helps take teams to post seasons yada yada, so that's another point of salary relief. So committing that much (not necessarily on Votto) could still be a big possibility given how much money the team is bringing in (and yes I understand a significant portion of that will go to revamping the tin can with the retractable roof). I think if the team is sure those 2 aren't coming back and the price to get him is cheap and they make Cincy eat about 25% of the contact we might get a guy like him.

Just throwing it out there for discussion

John Jaso could actually be a good target to replace Smoak. Left handed hitter who can play 1B. Good OBP skills and would probably hit atop of the order. f*** anyone who calls me out for owning Jaso, it actually makes sense if Pittsburgh falls further out of the race.

I'm a Bell owner, so Jaso GettingTFO out Pittsburgh would be nice for me. Him replacing Smoak isn't a bad idea either, though I'd probably prefer to stuff him at the bottom third of the order on a regular basis tbh.

^ Owns John Jaso.

But in all seriousness...would not be a bad pickup.

No.

Who's your new catcher?

who's your new shortstop?

I thought it was obvious that you would then need to acquire one

11 teams out of the race with potential for another 2 or 3 more to fall out by the end of July. It's looking like the best buyer's market since the second wild card has been introduced. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I think the Jays' rivals will have greater need and ability to add to their teams than the Jays do. I don't like the idea of making it easier on them than if 20 teams thought they had a shot at a playoff spot.

Davidi mentioning Shatkins might go after Pomeranz. Would be a good pickup

It would make sense that the Jays are interested, since Pomeranz was a 1st round pick of Shapiro back in 2010. However, I would expect him not to receive the same HR suppression if he came here, his ERA would probably fall closer in line with his xFIP (3.66). I wouldn't give up the farm for him, I think he's more of an SP3/4 going forward than the breakout ace some people want to anoint him as. The rumours I've read say that the price tag on him is sky high.

Not surprising. Guy who overvalued Matt Kemp and Craig Kimbrel places most weight on ERA, nothing else to see here.

His HR/FB is not really especially low, though, and he's under control until 2018. I'd be comfortable selling any prospects the Padres want.

SD will get a bunch of interest in Pomeranz. They probably ask for Alford, SRF and Tellez.

Easy, easy yes, imo. No way that gets it done, methinks.

His HR/FB is about 2 points lower than his career rate, and it goes without saying that Petco suppresses HRs more than RC. Beyond that, his BABIP is unsustainably low and his xFIP isn't that much better than his career xFIP. He's changed his pitch mix this year and had success, but he's also been a bit lucky, and he's also lost 1.5 MPH off his FB. I just don't really trust that his gains are sustainable considering his 90.0 MPH FB and long history of sup-bar control, plus injuries.

I'm confused, are you saying I overvalued Matt Kemp? I don't remember ever having an opinion on him.

I'm not sure how you interpreted that as an attack, but ok I guess.

I doubt we even have the pieces to get it done. Texas is in on him, so is Boston, and they both have much better farms and much more aggressive GMs.

I wasn't even sure if you were talking about me or possibly Davidi, the subject was poorly clarified. I'm still not sure what you meant.

Even if you assume that he regresses to a league average HR rate, a 3.66 ERA makes him an extremely valuable arm at his salary. That's pretty much a solid #2. Regardless of his velocity, he's missing bats at a very sexy rate and Steamer still projects him for a 3.37 ERA/3.56 FIP at the end of the year with a k/9 near 10.

You're assuming durability though, that's a tough assumption for Pomeranz. In years past he has repeatedly worn down and found himself back in the pen. I will be interested to see what he fetches, most likely it will be a Top 50 prospect (Devers or Brinson/Gallo) and then some.

You were talking about the price of Pomeranz. I said I wasn't surprised that the guy who overvalued Matt Kemp and Craig Kimbrel would place supreme value on ERA. I thought it was pretty obvious I was referring to AJ Preller but I guess not?
