I bet you $1,000 that Sean Hannity will mop the floor with you in a head to head debate match up. That's without knowing anything about you so I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt. If I did know you better, there's a good chance I'd be betting much more than $1,000.

But he's also a huge piece of s*** that has been wrong dozens of times and generally just seeks attention. Last year he said Cano was staying in NY he also mentioned on his show that Price is giving T.O a discount, so we should expect like 7/110......super solid deal making shapiro strikes!

If you look at anything Shapiro has done/said, you would see he wouldn't give out a giant contract to a 30 year-old pitcher. Especially since their are some good deals to be had for other starters on the market. Only way we sign Price is if he agrees to 20 million a year for like 6 years.

What if Rogers over rules him and says f*** it? I'm scared.

No way Rogers forces Shapiro's hand... You don't hire a new president known for squeezing value and then force him to make a non-value move.

You don't hire a new president known for squeezing value and then force him to make a non-value move. We see lots of GM's change their ways when given some money. I don't expect that from Shapiro, but it's possible. Then again, we'll have a below average payroll at 130 million, so he still needs to be careful.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 What if Rogers over rules him and says f*** it? I'm scared. I'd only be upset if it meant that we'd be maxed out in our payroll budget for 2016. If Rogers were to increase the budget to, say, 160M (we're at 118M now I think?), I'd be fine with it. This way we could still spend on the bullpen. If our payroll is actually 140M, though, and we have to clear Revere just to squeeze Price into the budget, and will have to scrape together the BP again, I'd be totally against this.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 It's not going to happen with a $140m payroll. Plus I don't think it's Shapiro's style either. Even though more money can change things (see Friedman in LA), I get the sense that Shapiro will be asked to win on a more modest payroll (less than $140m) going forward rather than a big one.

You think the yanks or sox would be less inclined to pay big dollars, after Price puts up a stellar season at the age of 31 or 32, than they are now? Look at Greinke, he's going to get a big dollar multi year deal.

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 When was the last time we made a trade with either of those teams? It can be the Phillies, the Dodgers, the Angels. We were able to trade more than 60 million dollars of Vernon wells and get a player of value back in doing so. You don't think there's a team that would take on big dollars of David Price after coming top 5 in CY young voting in his age 32 season?

My guess is his agent will want at least a partial NTC. And if Toronto were to sign him for less money he will want that included for sure.

I'm hoping that Price is the kind of guy that won't see a difference between 120M and 150M, see them both as huge paydays, ditch his agent and sign with Toronto. I am prepared to be disappointed.
Yorkshire Blue Jay Verified Member Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 I would like to think that if we were to sign Price that Shapiro has certain assurances about payroll for the length of the contract given. The casuals helped to neigh on sell out the Skydome every game after he was signed, I would envisage that if he were to be signed then the feelgood factor would remain for some time to come. I think we were 2nd or 3rd in MLB home attendance after the trade deadline with an average of 44,313. Those numbers might be sustainable with an ace like Price or Grienke but I highly doubt it if we sign a good value pitcher that doesn't excite the casuals.

The issue is that this roster isn't really built to contend long term, and Toronto fans have shown that they won't come out to see a team that's 0.500 or worse. The absolute last thing they need two years from now is a re-tooling team that owes 150$M to a guy they can't move.

I wouldn't get to ahead of yourself, a lot of things can happen in 2 years and we still have a lot of good core pieces.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 aka best GM/Prez in baseball according to some on this board - Friedman I don't think he made any bad moves..... There were made prior to him arriving and he was able to get out of the Kemp contract and still get some good value back. He has Grinke coming off the books likely and if he replaces him with a more cost efficient pitcher which the market is littered with them this year he could have a little money to make improvements mid season.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 I wouldn't get to ahead of yourself, a lot of things can happen in 2 years and we still have a lot of good core pieces. Established pieces under control for 2018: Donaldson (31) Martin (35) Tulowitzki (33) Travis Stroman Two of those guys are on deals that will likely be bad at the time, and one will be entering his last year of control. Maintaining a 90-win roster for the next 3-4 years isn't impossible, but it's going to be very difficult on a <150M payroll. Adding an 8/210 pitching contract to this seems like a very bad idea.

How can you include Travis as an established piece but not Pillar or Osuna?
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 How can you include Travis as an established piece but not Pillar or Osuna? Relying on pen arms and below-average hitting outfielders multiple years into the future is pretty dubious. Health permitting, I think Travis is probably a building block going forward. Osuna and Pillar probably don't move the needle when management sets out a long-term plan.

Why would they like Travis more than Pillar as a core piece? That seems dumb to me and possibly racist
