43211234 Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Ehhh, not too thrilled with this trade. Chavez will be making close to $5M next year. Not terrible but don't particularly like it.
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 As long as we still add an arm or two in free agency, no one will mind the loss of control. Besides, we owe one to the A's
43211234 Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Hutch is probably in the bullpen now.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Yep Well thats pretty much what the Jays just did the other way.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Hutch is probably in the bullpen now. Lots of possibilities. Also possible that Dickey is traded.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Hutch is probably in the bullpen now. If Hutch is going to the pen they should of just traded him instead of Hendriks.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Hmmm. I'm a Hendriks fan so not sure what to think of this one. Depends on whether you think his 2015 performance is sustainable. It certainly wasn't a fluke based on his peripherals. I thought it would have been worth a shot to see if he could be a back-end starter, and then turn him back into a reliever if that failed (with four years of control the Jays had time to see what they had), but Chavez is clearly the more accomplished SP option for 2016 between the two of them. I think the A's might end up getting the better of this one, but the Jays are still getting a pretty good starter for a season (if not more depending on how he does and whether they re-sign him).
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Well as long as Josh Donaldson is happy.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Hendriks is a weird case because his velocity bump as a reliever was way more than you'd expect. He gained like four mph. Hard to say if he can start games or not. I don't really think he has the repertoire for it and if I had to guess, I doubt Oakland will even want him to start. He's more of a late inning RP to me.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 19th best SIERA among relievers last year. I dunno I'd say thats pretty damn good. ...
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 I'd rather have Hendriks. I guess this confirms how s***** our rotation is going to look next year. Stroman Estrada Dickey Chavez Hutchison It's early bro Stroman ? Dickey Estrada Chavez Hutchison, Sanchez, ? depth Jays have like $20M for the first ?
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 I'd rather have Hendriks. I guess this confirms how s***** our rotation is going to look next year. Stroman Estrada Dickey Chavez Hutchison They'll likely get another starter. The best guess is probably Samardzija, they were rumoured to like him in the past, but he won't be cheap since every other team realizes he's still probably very good.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 I do like that we have at least 6 viable SP candidates on the roster now. The Estrada and Chavez moves aren't great value by any stretch of the imagination, but they were almost necessary given the wasteland that we had entering free agency. Remember, we gave 10 different guys at least 3 starts in a relatively injury free 2015. That's not to say that the rotation shouldn't improve, but LaCava has acquired enough depth to put us in a much stronger position.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 To me this signals Sanchez is going to be used in high leverage situations. Really hope Lowe is signed because I think they need more than 3 good relievers.
Ziggyy108 Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 I hope we trade Dickey ....
Ziggyy108 Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 And I hope we bring back Lowe

Losing Stroman puts the lie to 'injury free 2015' Historically, the 6th starter starts ~20 games in a season. No small amount. Good swingmen are quite valuable.
flafson Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 I honestly don't get it. We had him in the rotation, he wasn't that great, we let him go, he was "ok" in that big Oakland park so now we assume he's much better than before? I know what I have in Hendricks, no clue what I got in Chavez.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Not sure how I feel about this, Chavez has excellent peripherals and a good K/9, but Hendriks was outstanding this year (8th in the MLB for relievers with a 2.14 FIP) and his velocity bump was significant enough that it could have been a mechanical/development change, and would be worth looking at in the rotation.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Author Posted November 21, 2015 I could see Hutchison starting the year in AAA as our #6 SP now.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 AA was rumoured to like him.... who knows with Shapiro LaCava probably liked him too. To me, he's a good fit for every team. Big strong guy, throws hard, good control, and he does have nice secondary stuff. Not much not to like other than his crappy season.

nonamejays Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Is Chavez more of a GB pitcher or a flyball guy. If he's a GB guy, then this deal isn't too bad. If he is a FB guy, that is concerning.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 It's still early but so far Stroman/Estrada/Dickey/Chavez are good bets to make the rotation, with Hutchison having the 5th spot if they can't get someone else (and I suspect they will). The Jays probably plan on leaving Osuna and Sanchez in the pen if that's the case, and if they get another starter, then Hutchison is likely in AAA to serve as depth.
Yorkshire Blue Jay Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 One thing is for sure Chavez will be more valuable than Hendriks if they continued to misuse hendriks in his bullpen role. I do know that we lack starting pitching depth and this move will help to address that, it's a shame that it cost Hendriks who I liked, but for some reason the Jays didn't trust enough to have a bigger role within the pen.

JFD Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 what a s*** trade. Chavez has a noodle arm. do not want.
nmrch Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 what a horrible deal right of the bat from LaCava. Hendricks was our best reliever last year and everything about just screams legit to me. Forget the controllability, Chavez might puts up a lower WAR next season.
