art_vandelay275 Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Bautista signed a team-friendly contract which helped allow AA to surround him with talent, and he's carried our offense for years. He has every right to complain if this team doesn't procure an ace for next season, our last year with JB and EE under contract. He has a right to voice out being the guy with the longest tenure as well as being the face of the franchise. As for the contract, yeah it was team-friendly but it was also player-friendly at the time of the signing. At the time, he hadn't had a long track record of success and there was risk on both sides whether that success will translate moving forward. For Jose, it was a chance to make decent money with stability and security. To his credit, he's never voiced his displeasure over his personal stuff/contract but only what's best for the team. That's pretty rare in professional sports today.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Hmmm. Stroman Jordan Zimmerman RA Dickey Brett Anderson Marco Estrada Maybe Hutchison if they don't re-sign Estrada. This will be an unpopular opinion, but I think it's essential to give Aaron Sanchez a chance to be the guy we saw in his last few starts before the injury. A pitcher with a K/BB at or over 2 and that groundball rate is highly valuable in our ballpark.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Yeah, Price is probably hurt. That would explain why he was only hitting 97 MPH yesterday. The stuff is good. The command is just a bit off, and Texas has been a thorn in his side. If we win tomorrow I'm confident we'll see the David Price we're used to.

Its been very odd these last 3 appearances for Price...the 11 days rest....the almost CY winner not starting on 3 days rest in Game 4. But who cares? We are in Game 5 back home. Was happy to see his V back up yesterday.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 (edited) Bautista signed a team-friendly contract which helped allow AA to surround him with talent, and he's carried our offense for years. He has every right to complain if this team doesn't procure an ace for next season, our last year with JB and EE under contract. Its easy to say now that the Jose deal was "team friendly" but at the time it was controversial with Bautista coming out of nowhere to go from 16 HR to 54. There were a lot of skeptics in FO's he would ever come close to repeating that performance. There was endless PED speculation. Jose is a hard nosed business man and knew this. So did his Agent. At the time it was a fair deal for Jose and the Jays. Props to AA for having the balls to sign him long term. Edited October 13, 2015 by BigCecil

If Bautista is still here next season(I'd trade the bum) hopefully he will not be our starting right fielder.

I'd like them to sign him into his late 30s and have him retire as a Blue Jay eventually.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I've never seen a fanbase that hates a franchise player so much. It's absurd. He's easily one of the fanchise's four all time best players and depite that and being a CURRENT player, he didn't make that MLB Franchise Four thing. That says a lot about how under-appreciated he is. Meanwhile Roy Halladay WHO REQUESTED A TRADE FROM THE TEAM can practically walk on the waters of Lac Ontario.

Probably half the league will be in on Zimmerman. NY is going to sign 1 or 2 of the top free agent pitchers, it could very well be him.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I don't think people dislike Bautista as much as you'd gather from reading this board. All the people I've actually talked to in real life are fans of Bautista because they realize he is a great player and teammate. Agree Opposing teams (and umpires) don't like him The vast majority of Jays fans think he's great
Cookie Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I really like Bautista but I've def considered what I'd think of him if he was an Oriole instead.

He has the "dropsies" in RF but he has given us everything he has all the time. He wont be fully appreciated until he is gone sadly.

No way he should be losing a franchise player vote to Joe Carter and Carlos Delgado (as much as I like the later and understand the importance of the former).
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Someone in that Fangraphs article posted this: I think you’ve missed the boat. You write “Gibbons managed based on an old adage — that you manage one game at a time in the postseason — but the Blue Jays are trying to win a series.” Not true. The Blue Jays are trying to win a CHAMPIONSHIP, not ust this series, and I think Gibbons was playing the long game here. At the time Gibbons pulled Dickey, the Jays had become a heavy favorite to advance to the ALCS – 96% win prob in G4 + playing G5 at home with the SP of one’s choice (Price or Stroman). At which point the question pivots to, which pitcher do you want to have available to make 3 starts in the ALCS, and how do you ensure said pitcher is at his best then? To which the answers are: Price; and, get him some action (having just seen that giving him 11 days rest didn’t improve his game). -- Imagine if Gibby was actually trolling everyone and his main intention was to get Price the most possible starts in the ALCS?

Joe Carter career WAR with the Blue Jays is about the same as Bautista's 2011.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Gibbons explained it. You either agree with his logic or you don't. I understand what he's saying, but I don't agree with him, I just think he just panicked because he doesn't have experience in these types of situations. Just curious if you've ever played competitive baseball.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I really like Bautista but I've def considered what I'd think of him if he was an Oriole instead. Some people get up in arms when Bautista the competitor argues a ball or yells at an opposing player. This year he's actually controlled himself more in terms of arguing with officials, but I separate the competitive player from the person in real life. Bautista isn't the guy getting into trouble off the field and he has his own charitable foundation. He not only does his fair share for charity outside of baseball, he does more than most. Articles like the one below shape my opinion of the man more than the occasional outburst on the field. http://www.torontosun.com/2015/08/07/jays-bautista-donates-time-money-from-the-heart

I sure as hell wouldn't want to piss him off on the baseball field but it seems like 99% of the time he channels his energy positively anyways. I don't really see why Blue Jays fans should have an issue with him. Guy has been the f***in' boss for six seasons and seems like a pretty decent if very intense person.

The way i see and i can somewhat understand..... Before game 4 they had made their decision that Stroman was pitching game 5 because he is the hot hand. Now Reynolds was all bent out of shape because he is not available for game 5.... My thoughts is why would you burn your best 2 pitchers on Wednesday so non of them are available to start game 2 of the ALCS if you make it there..... I would not burn both guys in that game then you are without either of your best pitchers probably facing either Kuechal or Cueto to start the series. Also even without Cecil your bullpen has to manage WITHOUT Price anyway to get anywhere near a WS because he HAS to start games So which brings up to Game 4. Bringing Price in i think was more or less to get him some work in a game (which bringing in a Cy Young candidate is not going to hurt you)because then your talking over a week with him not seeing game action going into the ALCS. If this is somewhat the train of though i can understand it. Whether or not i agree with it i don't know. Just the way i am breaking things down.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I suspect the logic is Price > Norris + Boyd + Laibourt. Therefore, we won that trade. Things like salary and years of control aren't really factored in. Why not? Also, well played out troll thread AG, great work. Hook, line, sinker, bro.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Kershaw has lost his last 5 playoff starts for the Dodgers. What's up with HIM?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 It definitely wasn't cut and dry and the time. Norris' numbers last year were absolutely silly in AA and AAA. Trading a borderline top-10 prospect for one year of anyone is a risky proposition. If you guess wrong, it could be franchise crippling. You guys are both making valid points, part of the bizz, yo!
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Pretty interested out of four starters Price has been our worst. If we win Wednesday it will be interesting to see how the rotation pans out. Will they still go with four starters? Well they went with a 4 man rotation in a 5 game series, what makes you think they won't in a best of 7? You think Price won't be in the rotation? He'll be pitching game 2 at worst, lol.
