Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2018 Author Posted June 13, 2018 Rowdy Tellez has been slowly getting his numbers to a much more respectable level after a horrid April.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 (edited) Rowdy Tellez has been slowly getting his numbers to a much more respectable level after a horrid April. wRC+ up to 115. He's historically been a slow starter. Maybe now that he dumped that crazy beech - he's back to raking. Edited June 13, 2018 by Brownie19

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 Matt 12:02 Thanks for taking the time to chat. Maybe this is nitpicking, but I feel like Soto should be ranked third at the lowest. He's killing it in the big leagues right now, in contrast to all the guys you have ahead of him- Robles, Jimenez, Bichette, etc. Woud you say you have some doubts about his defense, lack of power ceiling, etc? Kiley McDaniel 12:03 Not an insane point. We also like to try to keep things in perspective, like we were high on Soto to put him in the top 50 with almost no pro track record, then he got promoted faster than any teenager has ever, now he's had a fast couple weeks...this isn't gonna keep happening at this level and he isn't a speed/defense guy, so when it settles down, we think it'll be in the same area as the Kyle Tucker/Bo Bichette types who are also gonna get a taste this year and probably will have a scorching hot week or two at some point early in their careers and have comparable tools but more track record
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 That's such an awful argument. Soto has a track record - a series of scorched earth, ~200 wRC+ performances at various levels across three different pro seasons. It's like Kiley is penalizing him for being young and moving fast. Weak. "a fast couple weeks" - man, u serious?

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 Careful consideration of his work since returning to FG has lead me to believe that Kiley McDaniel might be a dumb person. He used to seem so much better in his previous stint at fangraphs. Looks like he really is a dumn scouty type, or the Braves somehow made him more dumn lol.

On top of it, Bo is a year older and Tucker is two years older than Soto so even if they do the younger guy deserves credit. And on top of it, of course he doesn't have a lengthy pro track record, the guy is in the big leagues at age 19 so it's not like he had a whole lot of time in the minors. For the brief period when he was there he mashed. If they want to stand by their #9 ranking they should have relied more on the argument that his ceiling is lower because of position/defense/speed.

I know this is a scouting list, but Juan Soto is 19 and projects for a 121 wRC+. That's INSANE. Not only that, he's backing it up by destroying MLB pitching. That's a Vlad level bat. And they themselves throw a 40 speed on him with a future 50 field and 55 arm, so while he's also not accruing defensive value, they expect him to be a league-average RF defender.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 Soto is 19. He's not even a finished product. He can easily improve to be an above average defender.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 Defensive projections are pure BS unless the guy is *obviously* horrible or *obviously* great. There are so, so many examples of "bad" defenders being good. Especially easy s*** like OF defence. Run and catch bud. Not hard. All I care about is a prospect's bat unless he's obviously a pylon. In fairness, we've seen enough of Soto at the big league level to say that he is a bad defender right now. He may improve, but he doesn't have the skills that would make you expect such an improvement. That may or may not justify his low ranking, but they aren't far off the mark with their assessment from what I have seen.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2018 Author Posted June 13, 2018 Of course this is still firmly in non-prospect territory for him He is still only 23 though.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 Noda now has 7 HRs in last 11 games!!!
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2018 Author Posted June 13, 2018 Noda now has 7 HRs in last 11 games!!! Or 6 in 7 games if you break it down further.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 Noda now has 7 HRs in last 11 games!!! He's 22 in A ball.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 He's 22 in A ball. So was Aaron Judge and Josh Donaldson, and Ryan Howard and Kevin Youkalis and all kinds of others. He's got a .480ish career on base percentage and is all of a sudden hitting for decent power again. What percentage of guys who make it to this stage make it to the majors? What percentage actually become something?? Chip Cannon didn't. Some of the other guys were drafted pretty high. Who are the most similar career minor league players to Ryan Noda?
Ray Verified Member Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 He's 22 in A ball. Average age of pitching he's facing in the MWL is 21.9 and he's 22, so he's facing age appropriate competition. Need to see how he does in A+ or AA to fully judge, but so far not bad for a 15th round pick.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 He's 22 in A ball. True, but before the last 7 games, he had a grand total of 0 - while still getting on base nearly 50% of the time.

Kiley r dum

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 He also has a walk tonight, giving him more walks than strikeouts. He moved too fast through the system though. It's the Nationals' fault for promoting him faster than most guys in history, nothing to do with his talent. 55 FV at best
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 Joan Soto, holy f***. That's like 450... Too bad he's not legit
BTS Community Moderator Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 Just a fast couple of weeks. Nothing special.
