glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 Pretty sure he has told people he is hanging them up. Maybe, but I think he can still get a deal around 2/30 from a team in the off-season. He's been excellent the past 3 years with Toronto in a park not exactly conducive to his game. Depends on whether he is willing to give up millions. Dude is still money and teams will want him in the off-season.

On the other hand, if you can get a more advanced prospect in the next week or 2, you do it.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 heard on the radio that Saunders is still sitting at home in Seattle with no timetable for his return ... yeah, pitching's the priority but hopefully we can upgrade in LF ... no more Cola shagging flies out there, pretty please.

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 Yeah, but who wants to vote for the ridiculous spenders? What the Nats and Cards are doing with their budget is outstanding. I'd also include the Pirates and Astros. TB can suck a dick The real question for the Nats is sustainability.. like their AL counterparts, the Orioles, they stand to get gutted in free agency. And like the O's, there isn't much in their farm system to replace it. Heck, the Nats may not even make the playoffs, especially with the Mets hanging around and with deeper pockets and prospects to add a big bat at the deadline. Nats payroll is already at $164.1M for 2015.. not sustainable long term. With $134M in commitments for 2016, they're going to have a tough time keeping this team together. And the 2016 roster has huge holes in CF, SS(depending on Trea Turner's development), and in the rotation, as Fister and Zimmermann leave. And 2017 could be ugly.. when Bryce Harper hits arbitration, and like sees his salary more than quadruple from 2016 ($5M). Don't be surprised if they buy and sell at the deadline. As for the Cards..they're safe until 2018 (but it will depend on whether ownership can afford the salary raises. Don't be surprised if they try to do what they did to Boston to get John Lackey if they have another underperforming asset and a depth piece to trade.) Pittsburgh is also in good shape for the next few years, with most of the core locked up. Same with the Astros.. but they need more pieces around that core, as the current team likely is about a year or two away from being a playoff team (they're going to collapse in the 2nd half without significant buys.) Tampa's outlook is cloudy and dependent on a new stadium, plus they may need to trade one of their arms for a bat or two, because they don't have money to get it in free agency, and their farm lacks any impact bats.

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 We're sellers at the deadline. Then you can say the same with every other AL team not named Yankees, Royals, Twins, Angels and Astros.. everyone is trailing by 3 games or more. More likely that AA goes after controllable talent than an actual sale.. Boston is likely to do the same thing, as they're set to miss the playoffs, even if they have a modest recovery in the 2nd half. If Houston collapses which I expect, especially with Springer out till mid-August and their rotation running on fumes, Toronto is probably best set to take advantage.. Tampa doesn't have the offense and a worn down bullpen, Detroit can't pitch and is missing Cabrera, and Baltimore has been as mediocre as the Jays (actually, they've been worse.. 2-8 in their last 10) and their pitching has been weak. It is important that AA adds a starter at the deadline.. but unless Hamels waives his no-trade clause to Toronto, avoid rentals! Don't blow prospects on a short-term rental that won't resign. Aim for a controllable pitcher.

Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 We're sellers at the deadline. who are we gonna sell? I doubt anyone
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 This club needs a lot. Front of rotation, closer, outfield help. Couldn't add during off season, what's the chance AA can now Why do they need a closer?
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 Several teams who plan to add require a 1st baseman and have a better chance at the playoffs then we do, so why would EE not want to go to one of them? Recent articles list Pittsburgh, St louis, Washington and the Angels ! Seattle could be a Dark horse too or houstan as well !
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 who are we gonna sell? I doubt anyone AA should not be allowed to sell anyone. Let a new GM fix this roster. AA has done enough damage.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 So if we Dangle EE and Buehrle in a package deal to any of those six teams would it not drive the return up as well, just because of the division rivals aspect alone ? Add a piece or pieces to each as needed maximize the return!
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 Washington does seem like a nice fit especially if they take Reyes too ! EE, Buehrle and Reyes and money maybe provided we get a better return, and PTBNL outfielder position only! To even up the monies a bit better we take back Ian Desmond, Denard Span and give money as long as we also get Trea turner, louis giolito and Joe Ross !

If they're giving up on the year Buehrle, Reyes, EE,. Bautista, and some of the BP arms would draw some interest. That being said I still think they can make the playoffs this year. I'd like to see Edwin and Dioner flipped for some pitching, perhaps Reyes too. Go with Smoak/Colabello/Valencia at 1B/DH and Goins at SS (not ideal but the errors are getting to me). I think they'd be able to land 2 starters and BP help for those guys. Rotation of; Buehrle, Hutch, Estrada, 2 new starters (Lynn and Iwakuma?) BP of; Osuna, Cecil, Sanchez, Delabar, whoever else. IMO that's enough to right the ship + the financial situation going forward will allow for FA additions.

DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 And he's still gets good results (DIPS and traditional) despite the HR's.

DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 Iwakuma is a much better pitcher than current RA Dickey. You might even be able to trade RA + Navarro for him.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 If Iwakuma is a much better pitcher than Dickey, why would the Mariners trade Iwakuma for Dickey and a catcher they don't need? If they decide to see Iwakuma, I'd expect they would want controllable assets. I think the obvious piece of info you're overlooking is that the Mariners need a catcher. Iwakuma is also a rental coming off a big injury. They aren't going to get a great long term piece for him. IMO some stability behind the dish would go a long way for that team.

If the Mariners are trading Iwakuma, it's because they're out of the race. They'd have no motivation to take another player who's a rental in return. I DO like the idea of getting Iwakuma though, and I think he should be available without giving up one of our elite prospects.

He makes JPA look like a MLB regular and Goins a middle of the order bat. They need a C and have a decent rotation w/o Iwakuma. They'd definitely be interested in Navarro and if they want a long term asset the Jays could offer some prospects instead of RA.

They're 7.5 games out and have a terrible offense AND terrible defense. Would Navarro help a little with the offense, sure, but they still don't sniff the playoffs with him imo. I highly doubt they'd have interest, barring a fluky winning streak prior to the deadline (and frankly they could probably easily get Navarro without giving up Iwakuma if that was the case).

Well what would they give up for Navarro? I don't think they make the playoffs this year either but their roster is built to compete. IMO it makes sense to start building for next season and they need an actual MLB C ASAP to make that happen. If the Jays offered Navarro + whatever is = to to the comp pick (I thought RA but I guess not judging by everyone's reactions) is pretty fair.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 I like his defense but he it's not anything special. He hits like Jeff Mathis and is worse behind the plate. He belongs in AAA and hurts his team every day he is out there.

Except Zunino is a fantastic framer while Navarro is a replacement level player.
