No - I won't. I called you that because based solely on his results, you suggested it was obvious he wasn't ready. It was classic armchair quarterbacking.
I suspect the team believed Romano and Swanson were both ready to compete and contribute and were better options than White/Pearson and they wanted to have the best options available v. the Yankees. Did they get "caught" because Romano couldn't yet go B2B? Maybe. I don't think we know whether they knew Romano couldn't go B2B (or only the case of an emergency), or whether he woke up Wednesday morning and told JS he was tender or something. We also don't know when it became apparent that Green shoulder was sore. Either way, I probably want Romano closing out Tuesday's game than having him rehab longer and prove he can go B2B in AAA.
If they knew Green was sore before they activated Romano and Swanson - then I'd agree that keeping kept Pearson up here and staggered the callups would likely have been preferred (even though Pearson has only pitched B2B like 4 times in his career with bad results). Seems doubtful that was the case though?
We aren't talking about this if Swanson pitches a clean inning v. the bottom of the Yankees lineup. Or if Green's shoulder isn't sore and he closes it out. Or if our offense scored more runs, or if we got blown out yesterday. At the end of the day, the team felt Swanson gave them a better chance to win than Pearson. Swanson sucked, so people create a narrative that obviously he wasn't ready, or we start looking at AAA rehab numbers and other stupid s*** to justify a mistake. People are also acting like Pearson is some lockdown, surefire closer who couldn't possibly have failed in that situation because he mowed down the Rockies in his last game (and he isn't some 27 year old failed prospect with a career xFIP and FIP over 5). It's a game of inches - if that line drive goes into IKF's glove, instead of off it - or if Clement comes up with that ball at 3rd - it's a different conversation.
Did you guys want the best arms available for the Yankees series? I sure did. The FO has significantly more information than we do, so yes, I give them the benefit of the doubt. I'm sorry that type of logic isn't supported by some.
