This kind of action just isn't effective. If we were actually in the playoff race, I could see them fire the manager as a wake up message or a way to "try something new". At this point, it's not really worth it. I believe very few GM's are fired in season. You CERTAINLY don't do that the day before the draft, or this close to the trade deadline.

Weren't people suggesting the Jays must be doing something wrong with the development of their pitchers because so many are injured? What are the Dodgers currently doing?

Obviously not. We can't talk in absolutes here - that's not how it works. The Jays should field all offers for Bo. If someone is willing to pay 80 or 90 cents on the dollar for the player Bo's been for the past 4 seasons, then they should move him, as his value likely decreases as he approaches free agency. But if teams are only paying you 50 cents on the dollar, it's obviously worth the risk that he rebounds next year and will be worth more - even if he's a rental. That obviously comes with risk that he doesn't turn it around and his value bleeds - but that's worth the risk if you can only get 50 cents on the dollar right now. Just because things went south with JD's health doesn't mean that philosophy was wrong. I just means they ended up with a worst case scenario. Don't react to unique results, stick with the process.

Aside from the Cubs, Moore is most frequently tabbed with the Blue Jays. Despite a season that was worse than either of the other two college catchers (Lomavita and Janek) and more defensive questions, he might have a real shot to be the first catcher selected. That report is as depressing as the Jays season and organization right now. Is this a thing? Are there several examples of pitchers who had all kinds of arm injuries in their early 20's that must magically went away? I've always thought the biggest predictor of future arm injuries is your history of previous arm injuries.

You see this model of developing starters throughout most organizations - including the best. I can appreciate all those questions you've asked (how does he pitch when tired, how does the stuff+ play when he can't air it out for 3-4 innings, how's he do when he has to use his #3 pitch more often, etc.), but it seems quite evident that something else (likely related to the health of the pitcher) outweigh those concerns.

I understand that. Obviously the hope was that Ricky would stay healthier this year and would build up stamina and such, which would have made him an option as our 6th, 7th or 8th starter (which is what MikeM was suggesting he shouldn't have been relied upon to be). If you look around the minors, you will find lots of very good SP'ing prospect who only average 4 to 5 inning per start....but when they get to the majors, they average 5 to 6 innings per start. Bobby and Bryce Miller are both recent examples. There doesn't seem to be any top SP'ing prospects who are averaging 6-7 innings in the minors these days. There must be data out there that says that's the wrong way to develop pitchers (likely along the lines of the "don't waste their bullets in the minors" thought process). That said, I agree that injuries have hampered Ricky's development and obviously it would be a lot more promising if Ricky was able to throw some 5 or 6 inning games this year to demonstrate he can go deeper into games. Unfortunately that never happened and quite frankly, I'm not sure it ever will. He's still quite young, but he looks like he'll be unable to stay healthy while sustaining the velo/stuff he's shown. Ricky's velo/stuff "jumped" significantly after the Jays drafted him. One has to wonder if he wouldn't be better off pulling back on the effort to take some pressure off his arm. The results will suffer, but at least he'll have a chance to pitch more than 32 innings a year. He'll be an interesting case to follow over the next few years. I kind of suspect at this point that he'll continue to max out his effort and will become an often injured RPer long term.

Where would a good team play Bo if he's not hitting? MikeM said he didn't think a good team would play Bo at short, which suggests a good team wouldn't trust his defense at SS. Good teams are currently starting below average defensive SS's. Seager is a prime example. Seattle starts JP Crawford, Phillies start Trea Turner. None of those guys are significantly better than Bo defensively.

I don't think it's surprising for a player to suggest he wants to win - or to suggest that SF is committed to winning. I'm sure he'd tell you that the Dodgers, Yankees, Astros, Red Sox, Braves and several other teams are all also committed to winning. He might even tell you the Jays are committed to winning. You can draw whatever conclusions you want I guess - I just think it's dumb to try and read into it too much. That said, he probably feels like the direction of the Jays is going south - which it is. I suspect most the players understand the Jays won't be contending for a World Series anytime soon. If you're an established player who wants to win - you don't want to play for Toronto right now, or for the next several years (even if you do feel as though they are committed to winning).

Sorry - I don't get what you're saying. Obviously the Jays are only trading Bo if they get close to full value for him and if a team is willing to give that up, they're expecting Bo to hit like he has the past 4 years and not what he's done to date this year. LA would be trading for Bo and making him the SS as they don't want Betts there anymore. Bo is better defensively than Betts at SS. Could LA keep Betts at SS and add a RF instead? Sure they could. I assumed you were saying that good teams wouldn't play Bo at SS because he isn't a stud defensively. I don't think that's true.
