Matt Waldron pitches for the Blue Jays?

Yes

Claimed off waivers last week

Out of options

Probable Starters:

  • Taillon vs. Gray
  • Cease vs. Sandoval
  • Soriano vs. Suarez
  • Scherzer vs. Tolle

Here's the upcoming schedule:

  • 4 vs. Boston
  • 3 vs. NYY
  • Then an offday
  • 3 @ Tampa
  • 3 @ NYY

Just a brutal stretch of games but once we get through it, we don't face another team above .500 from August 25th until the end of the season.

If bullpen didn't blow last game and game against Cubs, be looking decent

Or if the offense scored more, or the starters didn't give up as many runs, or we played better defense, or we ran the bases better.

Bieber - 5 2/3, 5 ER

Bullpen - 5 2/3, 1 ER

Stupid bullpen blew it!

I know we basically declared the season over a couple of weeks ago, but this next stretch really could be the final nail in the coffin.

If they can split the Boston series and then take at least 2 of 3 from both the Yankees and Rays, that gives them an 8-5 record over those 13 games. It doesn’t move the needle dramatically, but it at least keeps them within striking distance of the third Wild Card without falling even further behind.

Obviously, if they could somehow go 9-4 or 10-3, that would be huge and might actually make things interesting again. I just don’t think that’s very realistic given how they’ve played this season.

Exactly, we keep saying “oh if they just win 3 of 5 here, or these 2 series, they will be in a decent position”

But the truth is, all year long this team has had many opportunities to make up some ground and they choke every easy/important series away. The team just has 0 consistency this year with both the pitching and the offense. And even the defense fails in important moments.

I mean they don't go 9-4 or 10-3 against anyone and you're hopeful they'll do it against the Sox, Rays and Yankees?  😶

It's the stretch of 15 games after they could make up ground.  Royals, Mariners, Guardians, Royals, Athletics.

And 2 AL East teams teams will stand at the top for sure.  One among TBR NYY BOS could fall back.

Best realistic bet is to play this stretch a little over 500 then beat the teams ahead of us in the WC standings

And that won't be easy

Yeah if we go 8-5 or better during this stretch of the schedule, the playoffs will be easy to make.

The final 30 games of the season are all very winnable. Not a single game is against a team currently over .500.

I'm hoping for 7-6 and then we need to end the season with our hair on fire against a soft schedule. It's unlikely but possible. Only 3.5 games back.

The main problem with this plan is that we suck ass and are probably worse than the 5 teams ahead of us. But other than that...

I'm available to come out of the pen tonight! Can top out at 80-85 and got my 45 mph Barry Zito 12-6 hook curveball that I could throw in for some swing & misses!

I know this is Canada, but we don't really use KM/hour to discuss pitching velocity

Hit the playoffs on a heater eh?  Could we be the 2007 Rockies?  How fun would that be?

The hope during this stretch is to stay within striking distance and not fall too far behind. As well, if they come out of it playing well, gives them some momentum and something to build on during their next stretch of 15 games against the Royals, Mariners, and Guardians.

If they finish this stretch still 3.5 or 2.5 games back, consider that a success. If they fall further back like 5.5 or 6.5 back, season is over.

We suck but we have a hitter that can hit .350 .450 .650 for months at a time.   Or at 99.9999th percentile age and level adjusted.  Did this in aa for 4 months in 2019.  In MLB for 4 months in 2021.  In MLB for 3 months in 2024 and in the MLB playoffs for a month in 2025.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr.   All we are asking for is 7 weeks of .350 .450 .650.  Not 4 months.  7 weeks.   Well maybe 11 weeks, but get the 7 weeks first.

We also have like 2 former Cy Young winners I think.  Biebs and Mad Max.  They just need to return to prime form too.

Red Sox are 32-7 in their last 39 games. Jesus

They were 32-5 before losing the last two games against the A's

Kind of like what the Jays did last season in the second half. Except they're coming from from further back and much later in the season.

We need a complete and total shutdown of Red Sox baseball until we can figure out what the hell is going on

The team's wRC+ leader on the season is Jesus Sanchez at 110. Only 4 players are at 100 or above on the roster. Top 2 in position player WAR are Gimenez (2.0) and Valenzuela (1.7), meaning the most valuable position players on the team are a dude who can't hit (unless it's a clutch situation apparently) and a backup catcher acquired for Will Wagner.

I want to believe, especially since I don't know how much baseball if any we will get in 2027, but the only chance the Jays have is sucking less than six other teams. I would be shocked if they go on a legit heater with the bats they have in the lineup.

Blown save, lost the game in 11. Bullpen Gave up 2 runs in a third of an inning.

On X they think they are cheating.  They thought we were cheating too last year.  And they thought the Rays were cheating too in early 2023.   I think I remember posters claiming they knew the secret of the Rays early 2023, but being very cagey about it.  It was weird.  They like a 25-5 or something and the team hit insane,   Then it calmed down and they didn't win the division nor a playoff game.

And they (correctly) thought the Astros were cheating in 2017.  And the Red Sox in 2018?

I thought the Royals were cheating in 2014 and 2015.  So many weird come backs and clutch hits at just the right time.

Going way back Cito Gaston freely admitted he gave the guys signs and told them what pitch was coming.  I remember on pregrame he flat out said Kelly Gruber couldn't without him (Cito) relaying the signs.

Is it random or is it all cheating schemes phasing in and out as the opposition discovers and stops them?

I mean we won a series against the Phillies and Bieber needs to be better.  They had to ask Estrada to pitch for a 3rd straight day and he blew it, as expected.  s*** happens.

Boston is just a well-rounded team getting a bit lucky.

They kind of do everything well. Blend of veterans and exciting young players.

I guess the pitching development has been particularly impressive and their pitching on the whole has been elite this summer.

I really liked the Marcelo Meyer trade. Must be hard to cut a 23 year old with his former pedigree but they had the balls to admit that he sucks.
