Honestly not having Santander and just eating the cost likely makes it easier to sign players to improve the team as a whole.

I dont imagine this is anywhere near enough for the Jays to use the clause that’s in all MLB contracts to fight the PA to void the contract if Wander Franco was barely enough to get that done.

It would be like a major kick in the nuts to have to pay Santander's contract should the league actually manage to implement a salary cap.

Whatever man. Nice attempt at a "gotcha" though. I literally said I don't think that means the contract can be voided but I can't force you to post in good faith. I think you are likely posting your hate filled nonsense in the wrong place as this isn't a right wing echo chamber. I'm done with responding to your garbage posts because you are doing nothing more than trying to start a fight.

I think eating the money is fine because I see him as a sunk cost. 32 years old coming off two lost seasons and basically projects as a pure DH with a bat that might be a hair above league average. I think Myles Straw would add more value in his roster spot.

That does feel like a realistic outcome although the ball will likely be in Santander's court. I expect he'll be given a chance to make a fake public apology similar to the opportunity Anthony Bass received and if he keeps his mouth shut afterwards this may eventually go away.

Yeah that's where I am on this one. If cancelling him gets him off the roster, then I'm all for it. You're paying him anyway, and the majority of that money is going to be after he's retired. If the options are 1) pay him and have him hijack a roster spot to try to extract any value out of him, or 2) pay him to go away which will result in opening up a roster spot for someone possibly significantly better, then I'm taking option 2 in a second. I guess option 3 would be taking a massive contract in a trade (ex. Seager) and insisting the Rangers take Taters instead of eating money. Whatever. Put Keys at DH, or sign Taylor Ward and put him at DH. There are ways to improve the roster that don't involve hoping this man 1) actually plays, and 2) is above replacement level if he does (at 32 after two lost seasons and injuries, it's very possible that he's cooked).

Read the part about all the muslims, that wasn't good. I thought he just wrote about Sharia law coming to the US like it has in Europe/Canada. He'll have to apologize for sure.

Do any other MLB orgs kick players off the team for controversial social media posts or is it just ours? I genuinely can’t remember.

I think we got away with it with Bass given the circumstances but if we dump Santander that will be two players in about as many years. I wonder how players around the league would feel about that. Keep in mind most of them are white southerners, catholic Latinos, or traditional Asians.

Maybe it's different in Canada right now, but the Santander story seems to be flying under the radar for the most part.  It'll probably be gone by tomorrow's news cycle unless a major news station decides to publish it.

The offseason timing helps. Hopefully this pressures the Jays into making a huge signing and then it’s officially old news. Bring me Tarik Skubal this weekend Ross

It never ceases to amaze me how dumb some of these pro athletes can be. You can think whatever you want, just know that the bare minimum you have to do is just don't post anything even semi-controversial online. Heck have a fake profile like Kevin Durant or a private one, but just post selfies and other random meaningless stuff on your public one and have no risk.

That Santander contract was terrible the moment pen met paper. It really took a social media outrage for people to start saying this lol. If it leads to the organization cutting ties I all for it though. You have to view his contract as a complete sunk cost at this point. I would rather not see him play Defense and would rather the DH spot be a rotation to get guys rest:

I don’t agree with people being cancelled for an opinion though. Cut him because hes lackluster and unreliable not because he spoke his mind.

I think just as many players, if not more, would be concerned with an organization who doesn't hold player accountable for their actions.

I googled it and the Red Sox released Brett Netzer, a minor leaguer in 2022 for a barrage of homophobic and racists tweets.

Steve Clevenger's career ended in 2016 for racists social media posts.  That's really all I found.  Not many examples come up of players who posted offensive and/or racist social media posts and weren't punished either.  The only names that come up is Anthony Bass and then guys like Trea Turner, Sean Newcomb and Josh Hader and those last 3 all just apologized for "old" posts from their high school days.

I think that just goes to show you how stupid Santander is.

I think the initial contract was plenty fair for both sides and it all went sideways after he injured his shoulder during an accident on the field. And people have been hating on Santander dating back to season one of this contract and this stupid social media post is just providing more fuel to the fire that already existed.

The taters contract should have been a bargain because the AAV is nice and low. But of course he's gotta turn into a band-aid the minute he becomes a Blue Jay.

All you ever heard from O’s fans/people around the league was how he was a great teammate and clubhouse guy, and he had 3 straight years of being a very reliable corner OF power bat.

But yeah of course he sucks eggs the moment he puts the Jays jersey on.

At this point, call the contract a sunk cost. He won’t ever put up good enough numbers to overcome the vitriol he’ll now face from Jays media/fans

Some newspapers will likely publish it tomorrow.

I think if he comes out with an apology/statement on his social media in the next couple of days, he likely will get a pass.

It will bother the SJW's, but that's it.

Yunel Escobar was shipped out of town during the offseason following his incident.

Jarren Duran also said something controversial, but still stayed in Boston.

Bottom line is if you play well, fans will put up with some BS. Santander has not.

Justin Verlander also had explicit photos of him with Kate Upton released online and that flew under the radar afterwards.

Everyone got to see Upton's tiddies.  Who's going to complain and make a stink about that?  LOL

I suspect this is the case - all of it.

I guess there's a chance that his shoulder never heels and he is forced to retire.  I wonder if this social media BS opens the door for the Jays doctors to conclude his shoulder is f*cked and he can't play.  If that were to happen, they may be able to buy him out and then claim some of it through insurance?  They'd have insurance on a $92.5M deal I'd assume?

Doctors shouldn't be unethical of course, but you never know :)

Lmao let’s go through the roster and count the guys who we think are “concerned” with the org if they don’t do anything other than releasing a statement saying Taters and his dumbass opinions are his own.

I’m going to go ahead and venture a guess that Nathan Lukes and his thin blue line tattoo isn’t calling Ross Atkins and demanding action lol. I also have an hunch that all those guys that went to that country concert together might be in the same boat. That’s about a 10 player head start but if you think most of the rest of them are concerned that the Jays aren’t going to hold Taters accountable I’d love to know who you think it is.

The news has spread everywhere now. I think they will quietly look at options to be rid of him.

There are controversial things that you can say are just a matter of opinion, and even those might get you booted, these were flat out bigoted tropes. I don't see how he survives this.
