I have to imagine posting on this board is at about the selfishness level of Fortnite,.  Hope everyone has a decent amount of money left over at the end of the month, and the family is well fed and warm.

Over the last decade what was the biggest contract given to a 2B? My guess would be the 7/175 for Semien and he was coming off a 6 WAR season and his 2nd 6+ WAR season in 3 years at that point (Mickey Mouse season sandwiched in between). Extensions to Altuve and Marte were way less than $200M. LeMahieu got less than $100M. Marketing himself as a 2B will probabaly increase his realistic number of suitors but may not increase his money all that much. Since Cano signed his deal (possible HOF track at the time prior to PED scandals), that's a position that hasn't been highly valued from a contract standpoint. Or maybe there hasn't been enough actual elite FA 2B over that last decade to get a good read on it. Certainly if Altuve and Marte tested free agency then they likely beat Semien's number.

And even Semien was legit good enough defensively to be a short stop.

Altuve's contract history is crazy. Some huge seasons but he didn't sign his big 5/125 extension until he was 34/35. The Astros got huge value out of him all those years.

the cano comparison is the one i keep coming back to for bo, they're shockingly similar when you dig into the numbers:

• incredible contact ability - consistently above the league average in chase rate, but still strike out below league average with lots of line drive contact
• above average hard hit rate despite the extra contact (we only have statcast for the back-half of cano's career but the pre-PED seasons look strikingly similar to bo in terms off HH and barrel rate)
• a mixed bag defensively (theres some rough early defensive seasons for cano)
• consistently in the 130-140 wRC+ range

i also like the fact that bo gets to an above average hard hit rate by controlling the barrel instead of having elite bat speed.

I haven't read any / done any research would back up the assumption that hard hit rates for players with elite barrel control age better than the guys who swing incredibly hard, but intuitively it makes sense that it'd be the case. (maybe a project for this offseason)

Arguably the position was devalued by shifting so the ban in 2023 might start to swing that equation.

Semien was 2025 Bo Bichette level bad defensively in the covid season before signing with the Blue Jays.
