Scenarios where they cut or trade Berrios or Santander are too fantastical.

At best you can hope for a bad contract swap. Very unlikely to find that fit.

If they need to move MLB players because of all the additions, it's much more likely they trade someone the fans like a bit such as Lauer or Lukes or Schneider, and get some value back

There is a natural trade for berrios where the money could be manageable but it would require frontloading.

Berrios to San Diego for deep cut prospects (preller is a good scout, there will be teenagers in the system that are interesting).

They are desperate for pitching. They have two real starters essentially and they have like i think 30 million to spend.

Give them Berrios, and 15m to all of his salary this year, and get some prospects. I think that is reasonable. They get a free or almost free pitcher who can eat innings which they really really need.

I agree that Lauer is an obvious trade candidate. It we did get tucker, i'd also consider dealing varsho as an extension would be unlikely at that point.

I also think they might trade heineman and schneider next year, but probably not this year.

Edit: i do think berrios will move. He loves routine and has essentially never pitched out of the pen. If not him lauer.

No they're at 40 now, the next cut would have to be Bruihl though.

No, 41 according to fangraphs.

We signed his brother too? 😜

I'm sure Buck will mix their names up during the broadcasts this season haha.

Vernon Wells got traded, I’m sure Berrios could get moved.

Would have been a great trade as well if the Jays kept Napoli around geez!

Don't know what AA was smoking at the time, trading him for Frank Francisco ugh.

Yeah i saw 41 on fangraphs too, that's why I asked earlier in the thread.

Seems odd to trade for Lee then have to DFA someone like Bruihl.

Lee has options, Bruihl and Clase are out of options, they're on the chop block.

Easy Peezy, make a four player for one player trade and pick up Mason Miller, then sign Bo and Tucker.

then we have a perfect 40 guys

putting X-Box controller down now.

Sounds like Miller may be headed to the Mets in the near future.  Would love to steal that arm for the back of our pen.

I don't think anyone is going to be stealing Mason Miller from the Padres and can fully expect to pay through the nose if the Padres are to budge.

I remember being so pissed at the time and then even more annoyed when Napoli did well.

I would be down for trying to acquire Mason Miller, but from Preller's comments, he would rather not move any guys from his pen and in saying that the price to get him is going to be a lot, here's his recent comments...

Quote

“There’s a lot of teams (from which) we have taken incoming calls,” president of baseball operations AJ Preller told reporters, as relayed by Acee. “…It’s nice when people are calling you, and they have interest in your players. At least then, you have some options. But I think the focus has been on the starting pitching and how do we fill that without taking away from the bullpen or from the lineup.”

Quote

Preller went on to double down on his desire to keep his team’s elite bullpen together.

“Anytime you have multiple people in one spot, you at least can listen to those types of conversations,” Preller said, per Acee. “But it’s not easy to find impact players, so you don’t take that for granted. And we have a lot of performers in our pen that have been impactful here the last couple years. It’s probably been why we’ve been in the playoffs the last few years. There’s a lot of reasons, but that’s been a big one. … So we don’t take that lightly. It’s not like, ‘Hey, we have a lot of really good pitchers, so we can afford to kind of take our level down in the bullpen.’”

Based on the current roster, who do we think the 13 pitchers are right now?

Quite a few guys have options so they can be hidden in Triple A.

Gausman, Cease, Yesavage, Bieber, Ponce

Hoffman, Rogers, Varland, Garcia, Nance, Berrios, Lauer, Miles

Berrios, Hoffman, Lukes, Schneider & cash for Miller & a prospect.

I think realistically one of Miles or Nance isn't on the team by OD, and are replaced by a lefty in Little or Fluharty. Absurd depth though lol, Braydon Fisher beginning in AAA after the season he just had I think falls in the category of "embarrassment of riches".

And naturally, injuries will sort the roster jam by themselves.

I'm not that impressed by that pen. I don't think stashing starter depth in the pen is actually a good idea unless their stuff really plays up. I'm not sure that's true for berrios or lauer.

What team’s bullpen impresses you?

I'd agree with the fangraphs rankings currently.

We are 8th albeit with Berrios not in the pen. I do think him or lauer need traded. If we are done signing guys, i'd guess we'd end somewhere around 10th best.
