Andy Martino of SNY is reporting that talks between the Blue Jays and Pete Alonso are "advancing", but further states that a deal is "not done yet" and that there is "no guarantee" one will get done.

Alonso, a 30-year-old four-time All-Star, is the top name remaining on the market but hasn't been tied to many teams. In fact, other than the Blue Jays, the New York Mets are the only other team to have been tied to the 1st base slugger. The Mets were said to offer a three-year contract in the $68-70 million range with opt-outs, per Joel Sherman and Dan Martin of The New York Post, which was then declined by Alonso's camp unofficially marking the end of his time in Queens. Around that same time, Will Sammon of The Athletic ($$) said that Alonso and his representatives at the Boras Corporation pitched a similar deal to the Mets but with higher annual salaries.

So if we start putting together multiple reports, it appears that Alonso is open to a short-term deal as long as it includes opt outs and exceeds $23 million per year. How far north of $23 million Alonso and company want has not been made clear to this point, but MLB Trade Rumors suggest that the front loaded $80 million that Cody Bellinger received is the low bar to obtain Alonso's services.

Across six big-league seasons, the righty has proven to be a modern day iron horse having exceeded 152 games played five times and has a 162 game average of 43 home runs and 112 runs batted in.

Given his reliability and skillset, how much are you willing to fork over for Alonso?

Be good if we trade Vlad. Provided we get big haul.

Honestly through if they do get Alonso but no other big additions what do you do?

Alonso and Santander both DH a lot?

Move Vladdy to 3B for good so Alsoso plays 1B full time?

Trade Vladdy if he doesn't agree to an extension?

Likely a rotation of Vlad playing some 3rd with Alonso at 1B and Santander DH, and Santander playing OF a good chunk of games.

Vlad/Alonso/Santander only really works if you see Santander mainly as an OF with a couple DH starts per week.

I do wonder with the rumors of the Jays being close to signing Alonso and also still in on Bregman, if they were to somehow miraculously get both signed, maybe the next step would be to trade Vladdy with 1B and 3B filled going forward. I'm sure they would love to keep Vlad, but maybe not for $450 million +

I still love the idea of Vientos, Williams and a couple upper minor SP prospects from the Mets, especially if the Jays have secured Alonso, Bregman and another SP like Sherzer or Flaherty

I really can't see them getting both Alonso and Bregman. Too many teams in on Bregman. Alonso seems much more realistic.

Agreed... I think the whole idea of Springer/Kirk and others needing to rotate through the DH slot has to die.  Practically everyone aside from Bo/Vlad should sit during their days off from the field as they aren't good enough hitters.  We should have 0 issues with Vlad/Alonso/Santandar mainly rotating through the DH spot.

They are all cheering for Pete, and by the end of it Cohen wins them over. Mets fans are smarter than I thought.

Spending 2 full seasons targeting players who couldn't hit but played great defense in an effort to double/triple down on run prevention, only to enter what appears to be a lameduck season prepared to have Alonso at 1B, Vlad at 3B, and Santander in LF is the Ross Atkins babyface turn that no one expected. I'm down. Still need to see it to believe it, as Boras is a master manipulator, but at least Atkins has been targeting legitimate impact this winter.

He was full tilt on Soto, Sasaki and others. Aimed high that's for sure.

The "plan" isn't to have Alonso at 1B, Vlad at 3B and Santander LB. It's more have Vlad or Alonso at 1B, the other will be DH,  Clement or Barger will start at 3B, and Santander will play at LB. Maybe we can sign Moncada to play 3B, if we aren't comfortable with Clement and Barger at 3B.

Not to mention Ohtani as well. Last offseason saw the likes of Chapman and Bellinger lingering on the market as spring training approached vs the likes of Santander and Alonso. I don't know if Atkins was particularly interested in Bellinger but it was apparent that Chapman was a top target all along.

As of now Vlad is an impending FA, and if Alonso were to sign here he'd likely have a player opt out after 2025, so I doubt either one of them would want to DH regularly. An Alonso signing would probably mean Vlad is playing 3B at least somewhat regularly. They'd have to weigh that against not signing Alonso (or being unable to) and having to find someone. At this rate the Vlad/Alonso pair is probably the best thing they can realistically pull off, unless they can trade for Luis Robert or something, which would be preferable depending on what it would take.

Alonso waiting,  it's like the girl saying she is really interested in you, but secretly hope her ex come back to her😅

So better call the White Sox, and make a trade for Robert Jr.  No matter if they ask Tidermann,  Orelvis, and few guys in AA. Then put Springer LB, Robert Jr RB and Santander DH

Springer would be a killer linebacker.

I didn't think it possible, but the Pete Alonso saga is somehow turning out worse from a reporting perspective than the Roki Sasaki one. How many people now have claimed that their sources saw Pete literally in the middle of signing the contract as we speak, and yet zero news has come out later validating this?

The media needs to leave the f***ing Blue Jays out of their mouth ffs.

I don't know how many of these rumor peddlers are members of the BBWAA but they should start stripping people of their memberships who engage in all this clickbait BS. The integrity of baseball journalism is in the toilet.

And this is from a former Mets general manager who might actually know people who know something. All the more upsetting if none of it turns out to be true.

Ya the entire Pete Alonso thing has dudes on Twitter thinking they’re breaking news because they saw a tweet from Winnie the Pooh saying it’s a done deal

No integrity. No real skills or connections. Just living in the metaverse hoping to be the tweet that goes viral so they can pin it at the top of their page with 1.7k likes and nobody remembers who they are
