This has to que the rebuild.  We can't be paying Straw $5M when we have like 3 guys making the minimum who are better and need a shot.

I applaud the effort to go all the way on Sakaki, but it's over.  Pivot and rebuild.

There's still a competitive ballclub sitting in the free agent pile.

Most likely signals some trades incoming.  Only way adding Straw makes sense and even then we just downgraded our offense even further.

Yes but why would any of them want to play for this team unless they have no other offers?

Literally lit 15M on fire lol. Maybe the worst trade blue jays have ever made based on the fact they clearly didn’t have any sign he would pick the jays.

Jays FO literally was grasping at straws…

I'm not buying into the "no one wants to play in Toronto" notion.

Who are/were the Jays going to sign with their international money prior to this Sasaki stuff? Not sure if they've lost any of the ones they had agreements with. Are there are good international players available that they could use the $2M on? Someone give me some damn optimism. I have to watch Myles Straw play baseball now. I want some good news.

According to BNS, the Santander talks "picked up this morning", so presumably right around the time the Straw trade happened. To play devil's advocate, maybe the Straw trade wasn't to entice Sasaki specifically as much as it was an attempt to recoup a pick(s) that they will lose in the event that they sign a qualified FA or two.

I'm trying here, guys.

Guys will come to Toronto but it’ll require a large overpay.

That’s the point.  We’re already at a disadvantage before even signing a player.  Then factor in this team has little to look forward too in terms of impact prospects, aging rotation and our two biggest stars are on expiring contracts.  Paying 20% more still isn’t enough.

Thanks man, I appreciate it.  *sigh*

I don't want to try and compete this year if it means we hold onto Bo and Vlad (and ever other valuable player on the team).  That will just cripple the future even longer.

Bo and Vlad are goners.  Sell, sell, sell

Wtf??

Ronald Acuna Jr was 160lbs and signed for 100K.  The Royals had the second highest bid at 50K.  The Jays have absolutely blown their international spending money the past 4 years.  Just go sign 30 or 40 kids.  Cast a wide net. They aren't good at this anyways.  Might get lucky.

Yeah, but you shouldn't have to spend 280 mil to get a competitive team that might have a shot at a wild card.  You should have a legitimate shot at the division when you spend that kind of money.

How many f***in cues does this team need?

Ross Atkins just got absolutely dog walked by whoever runs Cleveland these days. Agreeing to this deal hours before a Sasaki decision was made is absurd. The team already had limited payroll to work work with, and now 5M of it was lit on fire, for a guy who is probably worse than guys like Clase and Lukes. Like, there's no way that deal wasn't going to be there tomorrow. Cleveland would have been desperate to shed that money.

Only way this makes sense is if Atkins actually wanted to acquire Straw, and the international money was just icing to him, which if true actually makes me more sad because it would prove that Ross has lost his damn mind.

Yeah. There really isn't a defense for it. There are basically 3 rationales for the deal, and none of them are defensible:

1) It was done for Sasaki. Obviously Atkins got owned by Cleveland in this scenario.

2) It was done because the Jays just like straw. I think we can all agree that 5M on Straw is not an optimal use of limited 2025 CBT space.

3) It was done because the team was willing to spend 10M on prospects. This would actually be a very good move... if the team were rebuilding. It's an insane move for a team that's basically all in on winning in 2025.

Straw is clearly going to be our new DH.  If you lose your mind, you might as well go all in.
