Berríos launched his first charitable initiative, La Makina Foundation, in 2022. It supports youth in under-resourced communities in Puerto Rico and helps them reach their goals through baseball. Two years later, Berríos expanded that initiative to his new home country of Canada and called it El Dream. To date, El Dream and La Makina have raised more than $4.75 million through fundraising efforts, fan donations and 50/50 raffle sales. BatFlip and GoBlue41 2

It's santandar who is the clear downgrade defensively. I expect him to be batting 6th/7th upon his return if Bo's back. At that point, you can debate whether youre better served with him as a pinch hitter since it'll only be a difference of around 2 ABs and take the much better defense from Lukes for most of the game. Springer's outfield metrics are UGLY this season. I do suspect some of that could be small sample size weirdness as he's barely played the outfield in recent months but the numbers are hard to completely ignore. I tracked this back in the Statcast defensive search and George has provided an even 0 OAA in his last 107 innings dating back a full 3 months so the lousy numbers are largely a function of the first few months of the season. Checking the first 3 months of the season show George at -7 OAA in 305 innings and this is likely the primary reason that George has barely seen the outfield grass in recent months.

Ya I think the biggest reason he hasn't seen the field is because the Jays havent needed the DH for anyone else while simultaneously being the best path to keep him healthy. If Santandar was healthy all season, he would have seen the field a lot more. It does become problematic when you have BOTH Springer/Santandar in the OF. The answers to what we'll do is whether Santandar's bat is good enough to want to have both out there.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 16, 2025 Posted September 16, 2025 I don't hate Lukes Varsho Springer in the OF at times if Santander looks like the best DH option when he's activated You need Springer in the lineup every damn day he's been amazing
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2025 Posted September 16, 2025 I have to think Springer is benefiting from being a DH this year. There may be a downfall in his offensive performance if he plays the field everyday. Luckily the playoffs aren't that long, so we might be OK if Bo has to DH if/when he returns. Listening to small sample sizes where “he’s looking good at the plate”. He’s so bad. Hopefully Bo comes back for playoffs and the bum sits on the bench

I think some of the underlying numbers suggest he's not quite this bad, but it's certainly concerning, given his contract. But my gosh is the defense incredible. So fun to watch. With Bo out, he's going to be very important to the team and I hope his defense at SS is even more valuable than it was at 2nd. It doesn't make up for the terrible bat, but it certainly helps. To be at 1.0 WAR right now in 91 games with a 69 wRC+ is crazy. Stangstag 1
GoBlue41 Verified Member Posted September 17, 2025 Posted September 17, 2025 Assuming that the Jays make the playoffs at a 1 or 2 seed, is there a particular matchup that the Jays should want in that second round matchup? If the Jays are the 1st seed, it's looking like a matchup vs. the Yankees/Red Sox 4vs.5 winner. Is that considered a better matchup than the Mariners/Astros winner?? Just curious what everyone's thoughts are. I'm conflicted on what to be hoping for other than winning the East and Bo coming back.
Masterbather Verified Member Posted September 17, 2025 Posted September 17, 2025 Berrios cannot be on the postseason roster. I'm sorry but we've seen enough. He doesn't have put away stuff at this point. His feelings will have to deal with it. Top teams are going to eat him alive. He's not even a viable long guy, I'd rather have Lauer, especially as a lefty. L54 1

There is truth to this. Whether it makes sense or not, some GMs/owners care about this stuff. It certainly seemed to part of the Springer appear Post season przinz

He's the 5th starter and its pretty rare for teams to carry their 5th starter in the playoffs. I don't think there's any reason to worry that you'll see him on the playoff roster.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2025 Posted September 17, 2025 The Jays treat veterans with a lot of respect but I don’t think we have to worry about Berrios making the playoff roster. The org seems very aware of what he is and where he fits in the current depth chart. hanton 1

Laika Community Moderator Posted September 17, 2025 Posted September 17, 2025 Berrios got 0 strikeouts last night, against a team that had 18 the night before. 13 pitchers on a playoff roster. Gausman, Bieber = SP Yesavage, Scherzer, Bassitt = on the roster as SP or long RP Hoffman, Fisher, Little, Dominguez, Varland, YRod, Nance = RP One more arm fits. Do you want Lauer, Berrios, Fluharty, or Borucki? Fluharty might be the best fit. I see an argument for Lauer since he's a lefty. Don't see any real argument for Berrios... G-Snarls 1

Borucki was DFA, he wont be an option likely. Feels like Fluharty should get the nod out of that group if we assume Bassitt is there for nothing other than loooooong relief to save the pen if a SP gets lit up in the first couple of innings. Berrios is superfluous when you only need 3 starters. But they may need to change that if they get through to the ALCS.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2025 Posted September 17, 2025 The AL is wide open and there isn't a whole lot of distance between the various teams. Among the possible ALDS opponents, the Yankees and Seattle are the most formidable. I'd probably put the Yankees slightly ahead of them. Red Sox are probably next best. Astros are limping into the postseason.
