Laika Community Moderator Posted March 22, 2025 Posted March 22, 2025 Varsho indeed starting on the IL Jays have some tough calls here. I don't know what I would do. I like all of the Buffalo dudes. Wagner and Roden are the most intriguing. I love Barger's pop. I like Clement as a sneaky good starter. Roden and Straw not being on the 40 man right now could factor in. Lukes has a lot of CF starts in the last week. Interesting that they've given Roden any CF reps at all this spring. Telling? I see zero reason to care about Roden's service time clock.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2025 Posted March 22, 2025 Roden is 25 and likely projects as a platoon corner OF. Worrying about his service time seems pretty unnecessary. With Varsho starting on the IL, I'm not sure which direction they go in at this point. Straw is not on the 40 man, Lukes probably isn't a CF defensively, and Berroa is basically Straw. None of those options are ideal. If Roden can even cosplay as a CF for a few innings a game (sub out late), then that's probably the best way to go.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2025 Posted March 22, 2025 Clement having a monster spring which is great to see! Hopefully he's made some adjustments at the plate and some of that success carries over into the regular season. If he can be like a Brandon Inge at third base, would take that in a heartbeat! Roden deserves to make the MLB roster. Love his OBP skills and would be nice if he turns into a Brandon Nimmo type of player!
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2025 Posted March 22, 2025 That last spot on the 40 man has gotta go to Yarborough

Ya, i can't see the Jays letting him go considering he's a lefty and has been a proven long man out of the bullpen that every team needs when breaking camp.

Springer still can though for a few weeks. Just play George in center and Roden on the corner. M.E., gruber9292 and polar bear 3

It won't be great defensively regardless but as long as the right bats are in there, then that's all that matters.

Range isn't really Springer's issue anyways. It's the odd wayward throw. I think he'd be fine in center for a couple weeks.

BB17 Verified Member Posted March 23, 2025 Posted March 23, 2025 Barger probably deserved to make the team especially with how good of a spring he had. At the same time Roden did as well and Straw hitting RH and being able to play a good CF probably made the difference. Jays must be comfortable with Wagner's ability to play 3B and less so with Barger ability to play there. I think you play Wagner at 3B vs RHP with Roden in LF and Santander at DH and Lukes in CF. Against LHP Ernie plays 3B with Straw in CF and Schneider/Santander at LF/DH.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2025 Posted March 23, 2025 Looks like Nance and Lovelady for the bullpen then. Keeping Lukes and Straw over Barger makes sense with Roden and Wagner making the team. The latter two will play a lot and when Varsho is back there will be a bit of a logjam. Barger can get everyday reps and be the first man up when an injury happens. Overall I’d say they made the right decisions.

Man, Yarbrough is a kitchen sink soft tosser who projects terribly and had a nice little stint with the team on the back of some extremely favourable batted ball luck. I promise we won’t miss him. He’s completely replaceable. Spanky99 1
BB17 Verified Member Posted March 23, 2025 Posted March 23, 2025 Schneider just said it's Barnes and Lovelady who got the final 2 spots. Not going to lie the pen looks pretty weak to start the season and kinda concerning given how bad it was last year.

I doubt we're going to find someone as good in that price range. I'll irrationally be a Yarborough fan lol.

I also have a soft spot for that soft tosser. Dem's the breaks, but I still think we could have used some more long man depth with some MLB experience. Jays24 1

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2025 Posted March 23, 2025 Yarbrough was mildly intriguing but I like Yariel more as the swing man. Then on top of it we have Lovelady and Little as lefties who I probably like more. Then Sandlin is effective against lefties too. You can’t keep everyone and Yarbrough simply got pinched in the end. glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2025 Posted March 23, 2025 Don't mind not taking Yarbrough, but Lovelady and Barnes? I'm convinced Shatkins would rather take a bullet to the chest than promote a homegrown relief prospect. I have no clue if Fluharty is good or not, but I'd much rather see him or someone similar get one of these last spots than the rolodex of waiver wire crap that this regime likes to cycle through. Otherwise I'm fine with Barger going to AAA as well. There was no way to get him playing time if Roden and Wagner were making it as well. Lukes is probably demoted once Varsho comes back, so he's there just to occupy space for now.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2025 Posted March 23, 2025 I'm literally sick that Jacob Barnes made the team Are we doing his agent a favor? Does he have photos of Ross Atkins? What the hell is happening here? BatFlip 1

Schneider said he looked good in the spring with a newly added splitter, although Barnes' overall numbers are pretty ugly aside from a surge in strikeout rate.

If you can squeeze an extra inning out of them, you probably have to.
