The team doesn’t have to pay his salary. He’s also ineligible for the postseason this year.

The injury concerns are real, but he’s a 26 year old ace with ace stuff. Elite pitching is extremely hard to come by. If his TJ is behind him, then you hope you have another 4 or so years of elite top of the rotation pitching while he’s young before he breaks as he reaches his 30s again.

Yeah it's really dumb on several levels. 

They could have gotten some good prospects for him at one point. But they are also so cheap that it would have brought some salary relief that they could have put into the team.

Now they've got a AAA reliever who is the 5th highest paid player on the team.
