John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2025 Posted August 23, 2025 Wheeler done for 6-8 months. Needs surgery on a shoulder to alleviate a blood clot. Big blow to the Phillies for this year Nexii, G-Snarls and Spanky__99 1 2

Big blow to the Phillies for this year Yeah that's unfortunate. Hopefully Nola returns to some version of his old self for them. This season seems wide open when it comes to the Postseason. Like there really isn't a true dominant team both in the AL or NL.

In the weeks after the Dever's trade, there was not an organization that was under more pressure. People hated the trade, they were losing a ton of games. Looked like they were headed towards another lost season. Now they can legitimately come out of the AL. 162 is a long season.
Masterbather Verified Member Posted August 23, 2025 Posted August 23, 2025 I do think the Red Sox have become the greater threat. Spanky__99 1

glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2025 Posted August 24, 2025 Wheeler is not only a regular season ace but a playoff ace as well. His post season numbers are excellent. Huge blow for the Phillies.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2025 Posted August 24, 2025 So I hear Tucker's been playing through a wrist/hand injury the last 6 weeks, that would explain his regression obviously, the next 5+ weeks will be huge for him. Should be interesting. I'm all over this guy if I were Ross.

If Nola returns to his previous elite form over the last month, Phillies rotation can weather the storm. A rotation of Sanchez, Nola, Luzardo and Suarez is still very solid. But yeah losing Wheeler and his Postseason experience is a big blow.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2025 Posted August 24, 2025 Dodgers forgot how to score runs. Nestor Cortes looked like a Cy Young winner yesterday, throwing a no-hitter into the 6th inning 🤣

I remember assuming it was like TJS when I traded assets for Matt Harvey in a fantasy league, not understanding the difference in return to form rate.

Weirdly enough, there was a study on this not too long ago. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9047814/ What interesting in Wheeler's case is that he has venous TOS, not neurological TOS. The study only had 4 cases of venous TOS treated with decompression surgery, the rest were all neurological. but... for any TOS with decompression surgery, the recovery time until pitching in MLB again was 10 months, 80% made a full recovery, and of those who recovered they pitched 1-3 more years with no difference in post-operative performance seen vs controls. Severely limited sample size is the main limitation of the study. As far as a condition goes for MLB pitchers, it's still incredibly rare.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2025 Posted August 24, 2025 The Mariners sure have tanked hard after the deadline. Their pitching has been 23rd in WAR, backed up by horrendous defense and a below average offense. The Royals might give them a run if this keeps up. Brownie19 1

Comp sets are key in my industry and the analogy here, is including a Waldorf Astoria in the same Comp Set as Holiday Inn. Some RP or backend SP coming back and maintaining his 4.30 ERA is not the same as Matt Harvey, or Strasburg Comps. Also, as a hitter, it essentially ended Jarrod Walsh’s career, more recently.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 24, 2025 Posted August 24, 2025 Cal Raleigh just set the all-time record for HR in a season by a catcher (49) Gen.Disarray, Spanky__99, Brownie19 and 1 other 4

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2025 Posted August 25, 2025 Yankees beat the Bosox... silver lining we lose no ground today, save for the Yankees and Mariners... 4 games up on the Stros' for the bye and 5.5 up on the Bosox in our Division, respectively. Eat My Shatkins 1
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2025 Posted August 25, 2025 So for AL MVP, is Cal Raleigh a serious contender or do you still think Judge walks away with it?

Laika Community Moderator Posted August 25, 2025 Posted August 25, 2025 Literally tied in fWAR. Yankees fans and people who only like offense will tell you it isn't close but I think Cal is the odds on favourite right now. The Yankees are a mess and Aaron Judge is their leader. What does that say to a certain subset of voters? And the slashline numbers may continue to get closer. Judge has been pedestrian since coming back. Terminator 1

I believe Cal has the slight edge seeing as they both are crushing baseballs(Judge scuffling since his injury), and Cal's a catcher. But that's just me. A lot can change in the next 32 games or whatever is left in the season. The NL isn't close with the unicorn playing over there on the Senior Circuit.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2025 Posted August 25, 2025 I think it's quite close myself. The next 32 games will determine a lot. Big Dumper playing catcher is going to be a factor for lots of voters. Seattle has been pooh since the deadline though - if they miss the playoffs, that gives an edge to Judge.

Royals were playing good baseball up until they hit Detroit, but the M's are too good, I can't see that team not making the playoffs.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2025 Posted August 25, 2025 Looks like Charlie Condon has started to figure things out (140 wRC+ on the season). It's nice to see some things go right for the Rockies...
