Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 This is interesting. I don't fault Guerrero for setting a deadline but the opening of camp is somewhat surprising; many deals are wrapped up once the two sides meet face-to-face in spring. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/12/vladimir-guerrero-jr-sets-spring-training-deadline-for-extension-talks-with-blue-jays.html He said the Jays are still way off on dollars, which are reportedly $340m. That's... a lot for a first baseman, who isn't even a good defensive first baseman. It's in the Jays' interests to retain Vladdy but what dollar number is a hard "no" for you?
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 Jays offer is close to my limit See ya Vlad

The deadline is fine, I think the Jays would probably prefer to do it during arbitration and if it bleeds into ST a little I bet he backs off. Not really sure on the number tbh. The market has changed, so in some ways your expectations on the dollar amount should as well.

There are some teams that are stable financially (for now) but a huge portion of the league is in revenue free fall. It *feels* like prices are absurd this offseason - and they are - but it's only a handful of teams that are participating in the madness. And more teams are going to fall victim to the RSN crash over time.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 Teams seem to be paying like $12M for one win this year in free agency. The cost of wins has jumped for sure
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 Vladdy definitely going to bet on himself for next offseason. If he goes out and posts a 7 to 8 WAR season, he will cash in similar to Ohtani/Soto territory though for 10 years. Don't see a team giving him 15 years like the Mets did with Soto. Jays have to make a decision with Vlad. Either trade him before the season starts and get pieces with control that could help you over the next couple of years, or hang onto him heading into 2025 in hopes of contending, though that requires spending money this offseason to improve the team around him. They can't keep the status quo.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 Vlad is only 25 and is already one of the worst baserunners and defensive players in the league. If he had Soto's offensive track record then it would have been more justifiable, but he doesn't, and $400-500M for just his bat without that track record is incredibly risky. I can understand the hesitation. Unfortunately this FO has been awful with player development. If they had prospects ready to come up and compensate for losing Vlad then it would have been easier to cut bait. On top of that they don't want to trade him, either because of ownership or because of their own agenda to maximize 2025 wins for job security (probably both), so they won't even sell high in a trade.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 12/450M....get it done ASAP and then build a contender
Joltin Joe Verified Member Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 Trade Vlad. Doubt Toronto are in the race this year. AL East tough division. Boston, Yankees, all added this winter
Masterbather Verified Member Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 Trade him and Bo RFN. Trade him and Bo YESTERDAY
Nexii Verified Member Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 Mathing it out I'd say 10/400 at most That's 33 WAR (@12m/WAR) which I think he easily gets even as a full time DH
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2024 Posted December 23, 2024 Too much greed, time to part ways.

Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted December 23, 2024 Author Posted December 23, 2024 Too much greed, time to part ways. I don't fault guys for wanting to maximize their paydays; it's not as if owners are magnanimous with their wallets.

A lot of interesting points: Ross throwing John under the bus and sending an assistant to the arb hearing lines up with my impression of Ross, among a litany of other issues.

Do GM's always attend arbitration hearings? I'd have no idea if it's typical to send an assistant or not. The fact Vlad doesn't practice defense in the offseason says a lot - and shows a lot.
Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 Trade him and Bo YESTERDAY Yep, 100% agree. What sort of haul would the Jays get for these trades. A couple of blue chips and a few high risk, high reward youngsters? Who arew good fits?

The fact Vlad doesn't practice defense in the offseason says a lot - and shows a lot. I am not being supportive of Vlad and I have been on the trade him bandwagon since last offseason when I wanted to move him to San Diego. A quick Google search shows it is the norm for GMs to attend arb hearings, especially for star players or big $$. I remember AA talking about it and other GMs on MLB radio. Regardless, I think what Vlad is saying is that Ross has no cajones and it was also demonstrated during the post season press conference in 2023.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 Too much greed, time to part ways. No more so than any other player trying to maximize his value. Ohtani and Soto are no different. I think most of us if in that situation would hold out for free agency.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 One thing I loved about JPR, was that he sat in every Wednesday with Wilner to take questions from fans and have a discussion. He wasn't afraid to do so. Didn't have to, but he did. Atkins seems like a beta and would never even have the courage to do that!

The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 I wouldn’t be surprised if Vladdy is asking for a total that matches Soto or higher. If he changed his ask after Ohtani was sign and after Soto signed he might be wanting same as these guys. Would be in line with his thinking that he’s the “best in the world”. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40994113/vlad-guerrero-jr-blue-jays-resurgence

The cost of wins has jumped for sure I've read this too, 12M a win this season thus far and last season it was like 4M or something crazy like that. Pretty wild. It also looks like many teams are waiting out this spending spree.
