jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2024 Posted December 13, 2024 I've suggested this several times now, but the previous 2 regimes were also pretty awful at drafting/developing players. It isn't limited to just Atkins. No idea why - perhaps the facilities were a major issue? Perhaps it will take longer for the new facilities to pay off? Someone did post that the Jays organization had some of the best statcast numbers in the minors last year (on the hitting side I believe). I believe last year was the 3rd full year the new facility was open, so maybe it's starting to pay off? I really have no idea, but I can observe that the current FO isn't the only ones to have sucked goats at this. The JPR regime was pretty awful at drafting/developing players. Off the top of my head, Adam Lind/Aaron Hill/Shaun Marcum/Ricky Romero were probably the best to come out of his draft picks. As for AA, he did build up the farm system very well during his time here and used those prospects as assets in trades. Did all of them turn into superstars? Not really other than Syndergaard for a couple of years with the Mets before he got injured. Matt Boyd, Jeff Hoffman, Travis d'Arnaud turned out to be alright down the road. For the Jays who they kept, arms like Stroman, Sanchez, and Osuna turned out to be really good. Devon Travis was a very nice trade - too bad he never managed to stay healthy. AA did sign Vladdy as an International FA and well he's the superstar of this team now, so that's gotta mean something. But yeah he wasn't turning out superstars or elite guys with every pick/prospect if that's the point you're trying to make. Wouldn't say the AA regime was awful at drafting/developing players.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted December 13, 2024 Posted December 13, 2024 I don't know why anyone would want to be in San Francisco right now considering how much of a s*** hole its turned into since they decriminalized a lot of drugs. Like it's so bad. I love the Bay Area its so sad to see what happened to it. Last time I was in Toronto I literally saw people s***ing in Queens park. There were multiple tents there and people just casually doing their morning business. The Tim Horton's nearby had all seating removed and bathrooms deadlocked. Obviously was once a normal Tim Horton's that had actually people sitting, talking, but all seats had to be now removed because of loitering. San Francisco may also be bad. NY City and Boston in my experience do not have those problems (edit: to the same extent I mean, obviously any area of millions of people have some people s***ing in public.... but some big cities have more of this than others). If Burnes is insulted by people s***ing in public he needs be in a) Texas, Kansas City, c) Pittsburgh, d) Boston (sorry Grant, Boston is clean and well run, the home of Havard, of the Boston Marathon, of the nicest people in the world, a place of loyalty, ethics and the last example of we have of a functional liberal city).

AA exposed a massive loophole in the CBA (kudos to him), which allowed him to restock the farm system much faster than teams can today - that was one of the reasons I was a big fan of his. But even with all those extra draft picks, very few were good. Here's the list of his 1st round picks Deck McGuire, Aaron Sanchez, Syndergaard, Wojciechowski, Beede (couldn't sign), Jacob Anderson, Joe Musgrove, Dwight Smith Jr, Kevin Comer, DJ Davis, Stroman, Matt Smoral, Mitch Nay, Tyler Gonzales, Phil Bickford (couldn't sign), Jeff Hoffman, Max Pentecost, Jon Harris AA had 18 first round picks (including comps) over 6 drafts, which is insane! (I guess 16 if he signed everyone). Under the new rules, Atkins has had 1 each year, except in 2017, when we had 2. Just think about how good we could have been if AA would have drafted/developed 3 or 4 more studs with all those darts. Taking advantage of the rules in place, he had the PERFECT opportunity to create waves to talent and a sustainable winner. Nobody has been very good at it in Toronto for a very long time. Also has the worst traffic in North America outside LA. San fran can be pretty s***** but its in certain pockets. Also players all would likely live in the nice areas and commute into the city, so its not like they are ever walking through the Tenderloin district lol. The city has really gone downhill since Covid and I've lived here since 2016. The good thing for attracting baseball players, is its a pretty nice city from May-October. Nov-April it blows.

Seems like the Jays are out on Corbin Burnes. Looks like it's Giants vs Red Sox even after they got Crochet, per Boras himself? (via Nightengale). If the rumours of Bregman signing with the Yankees end up being true, Santander and Teo will be the only budget raising free agents left. This fella, is no better.

People overplay all this stuff. They don't care. They care about weather to an extent, yes, but unless it's an active warzone, it's all the same to them. They live in safe places they get from place to place in their car, and only go to the ballpark or other largely nice, safe, higher end places in the community. Any regular city weirdness they encounter they shrug off like we all do. There's weirdness everywhere.

The traffic is terrible. I can understand why some people wouldn't want to come to Toronto. Downtown Toronto wasn't as nice as it was 10 to 15 years ago. Definitely a lot has changed. Tent cities pretty much have popped up everywhere, lots of homeless and schizophrenics around especially on Yonge Street. You have guys shooting up in the streets as well sometimes in public which is awful. It's kind of depressing and feels like a Gotham City. Traffic is awful, so don't even bother driving. Always take the TTC, GO or UP. Even still, the TTC can be a hellhole or break down anytime so be careful. Restaurants/bars are overpriced downtown and aren't anything special. A lot better places for nightlife outside of the downtown core which are safer and less expensive. I only go downtown when a Raptors game is on or Jays game.

Forgot about Jos Musgrove. But yeah AA definitely was smart and took advantage of the loopholes. He was one step ahead of other GMs/Front Offices in the games. We kind of need Atkins and this front office to be the same way in some different areas when it comes to player assessment and evaluation. Maybe we see it with them targeting high WAR defensive minded players like Varsho and Gimenez who seem to be undervalued and won't ever become crazy expensive in comparison to other players. First round draft picks can be a crapshoot and the success rate isn't as high as let's say in the NBA. We've known that in baseball for sometime. One thing AA did was draft/acquire high end talent which was sought after by the other 29 clubs, and therefore used a lot of those prospects as assets in trades to acquire elite players. He also was very limited when it came to spending in free agency, since Paul Beeston had the 5 year max rule for contracts. So AA had to be creative on the trade market since they couldn't spend a lot of money and years on free agents. Some trades were meh but some turned out to be really good. Regardless, yeah the draft picks under AA all didn't turn into studs. There were a lot of misses, so yes he wasn't a super genius or awesome in that department. Will give him kudos for exposing a loophole which allowed the Jays to restock their farm system quicker and also by using those assets in traded for MLB players. But still doesn't mean we should give Atkins and this front office a free pass when it comes to drafting and player development. They came in promoting how they would be that type of organization which focused on that area and have done a satisfactory job to this point.

Their gameday routine is wake up, go to starbucks and then go to the stadium at like noon. There's maybe like 8 off days where they would even do something in the city. For players with families I do think it matters a lot though, not so much the city itself but is it close to their offseason home/extended family. If they have kids in school they likely are keeping them there in the city they live in the offseason, so how far apart is it etc etc.. Memphis is a f***ing warzone yet you don't really hear about it when it comes to Grizzlies players. They all live in gated communities in the wealthy suburbs anyways.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 Most of the reports I hear from players join the Jays is that they really like the city. Haven't heard of a single player criticizing it. I didn't know Memphis was a war zone. I always thought Tennessee was one of the better states to relocate to. I know two people who moved there and they love it.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 Beale street is pretty cool/fun. Some good music and they close off the street so you feel pretty safe there. But if you drive a few blocks it can be pretty sketchy. Nashville even has some pretty bad spots, had to drop off a rental car once north east of downtown across the bridge and had a guy run up to me for money and it definitely didn't feel safe lol. And this was middle of the day time. Chattanooga is another cool Tennessee town but it can be rough too.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 Dodgers were always going to get Ohtani. They spent two years paring down payroll in anticipation and he almost certainly wanted to go there anyway. The hindsight problem was not nailing down Vladdy for <350M a year or two ago. If that was possible. C'mon man, his market was nowhere near that a year ago, and now 400 is ridiculous.

When I was in Ottawa two years ago, two homeless people got into a fight at the CF Rideau Centre. Punches were thrown and cops had to come. Even outside the mall and around Byward Market, some homeless and drug addicts around. My dad went to Ottawa this summer and he even noticed that downtown Ottawa was pretty bad and he was shocked.
