glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Green would be good to move given the money and big time sellers market. The SP with term we moved could bring us a rare haul in this deadline. They want to roll it back yet again and need a rotation lol, so I fear you are correct. Its going to be interesting looking back in Aug at '25 how all this mess all turned out. Curious to know what teams are offering for Bassitt. On one hand he seems like the perfect guy to trade right now but he makes $21m next season at age 36 and he’s closer to a #4 starter at this point. You can probably rule out the small to mid market contenders with that contract. He might have been a bigger asset if he was a rental. His contract is fair value at best with no chance for surplus. Gausman is the guy to move if you want to take advantage of this market as he has an ace ceiling but that’s why the Jays will keep him praying he bounces back.

Jays may have to pitch in $$ to improve the return from Bassitt...They should be exploring that though. You can just use the $21M in the offseason.

The pull of the tantalizing 3rd wild card has changed the whole game, and approach to deadline. It makes the Jays roll back approach somewhat plausible. I think it blows up in our faces in '25 as it did this year, but I can understand why they are doing it. They want to be the '24 BoSox in '25. Keeps us watching and going to games. And the "just get in" crowd goes wild. Given the rental market strength, potentially getting a nice haul for termed starters makes so much sense - except for that 3rd WC rationale.

I'm not sure how serious they are about selling Bassitt given his general dependability, but it's always in the cards to eat up some of his contract to improve the prospect return. I could see a Chad Green deal also having us eat some money.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Just to reiterate JPM is an idiot, something we all know. Why do networks give him so much airtime??

I think he's negative value because he doesn't give contenders the impact in the playoffs. So all he's offering is a 21m innings guy for 2025 which they can find in FA

It’s a sellers market but that $21m next season is a very large amount for any team to pick up for someone Bassitt’s age and projected value. As mentioned the same issue might apply to Green. He’d have way more value as an expiring rather than another team having to pay him $10.5m next year. The player to move to get under the tax is probably IKF.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 fangraphs estimate has the Jays LTP sitting at $239.2 million. If accurate there has to be something else coming to shed the $2.3 million needed to get under the threshold.

Eflin is owed a few million less next year, is younger and did pitch at a higher level last year (which otherwise he's never done). Typical season by Bassitt is better than a typical season by Eflin though. Neither have much playoff experience/success.

BTS Community Moderator Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 So the big intrigue on deadline day is the Trevor Rogers sweepstakes? Good show, MLB.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Trevor Rogers to the O's, Simms to the Red Sox. There you go Laika
Ray Verified Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 It's actually Connor Norby AND Kyle Stowers for Rogers.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 i fully support this Orioles move.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 We still don't know how much money the Jays are covering in the Turner deal ("cash considerations" was included based on the press release). I can't imagine the Jays are actually going to pay the tax this year because they don't want to trade anyone controlled through 2025. That seems idiotic, especially if the intention is to go AA-2015 in the off season. They are much better off getting under the tax to reset the penalties and then blowing through the 2nd tier in the off season. Still hoping for an IKF or Green deal in addition to the FAs being moved, but I guess it depends on what the payroll situation is. Maybe enough money is being covered in the Turner deal to get under it. Paying $2m for Vogelbach in hindsight (and hell at the time as well) was just awful.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Love to see the Os finally blow some of their prospect capital that + some guys that smell like busts (Holliday, Povich) and maybe they won't be amazing for 10 years. maybe just 5 years.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 What does Baltimore see in Rogers? Great in 2021, but it's been all downhill since. Velo down over 2 MPH, K% down, BB% up, injury concerns.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Doesn't seem like the injury concerns and diminished stuff are worth the 2 extra years of control they are getting
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 The O’s should’ve moved Mayo + for some real rotation help instead of patching it together with Eflin and Trevor Rogers
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Truly pathetic, what the Os are doing Embarrassing
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Are we sure the new owners are going to spend? Because they're making the kinds of moves they'd make if they had no money.
