To end on a positive note, their record is better than the Houston Astros - a perennial playoff team. So they got that going for them, which is nice...

No big deal. Every year the Jays win the season series against the Astros despite getting outscored. They'll take the next two games by one or two runs.

I don’t know man, they looked absolutely hapless out there, Vlad especially. Feels like this team needs a major shakeup and they opted for more of the same. It’s only Game 5 though just going to keep telling myself that see what happens.

Could’ve been a rough flight or something. Seems like the entire team was out of it. Who tf knows. Lets hope they bounce back tomorrow

One loss won't hurt you that bad, no matter how lopsided and awful it is. Losing streaks are the problem. Let's avoid one of those.

Francis' stuff graded out well.

The stuff was good but they were all over him in the early innings. Maybe he was tipping pitches?

Mattingly runs it now. Guillermo and Hague are his underlings. They most likely all have different ideas. Mattingly probably can't even open the excel file Hague sends him.

The Rangers hitting coach is a certified biomechanics specialist, for comparison.

It's hard to judge as an outsider, when all the insider information is now so complex. Can really only try to evaluate the personalities involved. Is Mattingly the guy to teach hitters in 2024?

I do question whether a guy with 99.9th percentile hand eye coordination who had immediate success hitting .350 with 30 strike-outs against 80s pitching, is really the guy to understand what the Daulton Varsho's of the world go through.

If you needed a successful former big leaguer to be there, it just seems guys like Bautista, EE, and Donaldson have more relevant and recent experience. Not necessarily those guys, but similar profile, a guy who actually faced some struggles but perservered and put it together and reached his ceiling.

That's what we want. Some of these guys to reach ceiling of at least 75th percentile outcome, not 25th.

A few weeks ago someone (can't remember who) brought up the explanation and the hard truth about the Jays offence.

1. Things looked promising in 2020 and 2021 with Jays offence looking elite and players surprising positive.

2. Something changed in 2022 with players no longer over-performing.

3. What changed was other teams processes were disrupted in 2020 and 2021 and Jays players (who are talented) excelled in the 1980s like environment where their weaknesses weren't being analyzed from 1000 different angles.

4. After Covid other teams not only brought their processes back in line but moved them to the next level.

5. Jays players can't over-perform in this current environment because their processes are behind the times.

As a side note, I don't think at all the 2021 team really had a special chance to go any where in the playoffs. They ran up a run differential early and beat the s*** out of the Orioles late as the Orioles chased Jackson Holiday and prepared for their dynasty.

But the 2021 Jays held a playoff spot with 2 weeks to go then lost series to TBR and the Yankees when those teams were prepping for the playoffs and the scouting and game prep was getting back to normal.

I'm going to roll with the Birds pounding them tomorrow... :P

Framber on the mound, but watch the Jays score 5 to 6 runs off of him haha.

Meanwhile, in Arizona, Gurriel & Moreno have been tearing sh*t up the past few days

Moreno is hitting .188 with a 58 wRC+ sir. Let's not make things up.

And what Gurriel does now is irrelevant to the trade. He was a free agent a few months ago, and any team could have signed him.

Exactly. People seem to forget that. If they really wanted Gurriel for 3 years, $42M with an opt out - be my guest.

The shape of Gurriel's time with Toronto was just really unfortunate. The wrist injury, then the complete loss of power heading into his last season of control...

If you ignore his defense and baserunning, and also 2022 where the power disappeared, he really does look like such an excellent hitter. Consistent contact with pop.

Jays fans probably underrate him a bit because of emotional baggage.

Contract was still probably bad but interestingly the D-Backs got a much better year from him defensively than the Jays ever did.

I was hoping they would tweak Varso's swing in the offseason but it really doesn't look any different. Until he makes an adjustment to be able to hit the high fastball I think its going to be tough for him to become an above average hitter. He's got all the tools with the bat speed etc.. but his swing path is hideous.

I always felt and still do that LGJ could have a monster season (or more) in him.

A disappointing career overall from my expectations especially after being moved way down the defensive spectrum.

He's been a tease his whole career. Everyone will also think there's more in the tank - and maybe there is as he hits age 30? Or maybe not.

Here's an article explaining the changes he's made. No results yet, but it looked great all spring.

He might just be hopeless. Nothing more than a mistake hitter.

I guess when the games matter and getting him out is important, he's still easy as hell to pick apart.

Vlad also might be floundering. He is trying to make better swing decisions so he is swinging less, which is great, but he's somehow making LESS contact when he does swing which makes no sense. It's like he's deciding before the pitches are thrown to just take, take, take and then he will guess and swing.

100% I don't draw any more conclusions from that no hitter, than I do from a 39 yr old JT having a hot Game 4, but projected 105. I don't know what Clement really is yet etc. etc. etc. Its such a long season - ups and downs and sample sizes right now are tiny.

Its not that likely, but there is a decent chance they come right back and hammer Valdez today.
