Key22 Verified Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 Teo was a free agent after last season so his trade would have zero bearing on whether a Soler addition makes sense. But the reason they traded Teo was because they were supposedly going for a "balanced line-up" as in acquiring some big left-handed hitters. They signed Belt and KK - that didn't help too much (and we lost a big righty bat). They never got the big lefty bat. Now it's another offseason and we have lost Belt and we still don't have that "BIG" lefty bat. As a team, we are far "worse" right now than we were at the end of last season. We are down Belt, Chapman, and 2-hit Whit, and you can sort of include Ryu as he was effective when he was healthy. Ryu is a known commodity - the Cuban kid isn't. I suppose IKF is the Whit replacement but that's a downgrade offensively. Belt was probably our best hitter after Bo. Still plenty of time left in the off-season but it's not looking too exciting. Maybe they feel Horwitz can replace Belt and Davis Schneider is going to be a monster?

Maybe they feel Horwitz can replace Belt and Davis Schneider is going to be a monster? I guess a lot of this depends on what your definition of a "big" lefty bat entails. I think Belt was awfully close to qualifying as one personally with his 146 wRC+ against right handed pitching. If I had any belief in his ability to reproduce those types of numbers I'd love for the team to bring him back but there are just way too many red flags that make a repeat seem unlikely. It seems almost a certainty the team will sign a primary DH but it'll be a tall order to fully replace the type of offensive output that Belt provided. I have zero concerns over losing Whit. He was a decent low cost acquisition whose best years are behind him and he's easily replaced by internal options. Ryu was a nice depth option to cover the innings the team lost when Manoah morphed into baseball's worst starter, but if Manoah didn't forget how to pitch Ryu wouldn't have been of much use to the team. It seems more than likely that Chapman will be playing for a different team next season but I'm still holding onto a faint bit of hope that he may be brought back.

Whit is a below average offensive player. He was our 3rd least productive hitter. Davis Schneider doesn't have to be anywhere near a monster to replace his value at 2B/LF.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2024 Posted February 9, 2024 Turns out the contract is 5/32 and not 4/32 as originally reported. Otto Lopez was designated for assignment.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2024 Posted February 9, 2024 Turns out the contract is 5/32 and not 4/32 as originally reported. Otto Lopez was designated for assignment. $6.4 AAV. Seems like a reasonable gamble when guys like Wade Miley, Martin Perez, Erick Fedde, Pagan and Alex Wood are all making more. Junis just got 1 yr $7M - he may be a comparable for Yariel, although Yariel likely has much higher upside.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2024 Posted February 9, 2024 Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports that the fifth year on Rodriguez’s contract is a player option valued at $6MM. If Rodriguez declines that option, the team will then have the ability to exercise a $10MM club option. That could take the contract to $36MM over five years, though Francys Romero reports that the total money can climb as high as $40MM, which suggests there are some additional incentives baked into the arrangement. So... maximum 5/40, minimum 4/26 ???
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 9, 2024 Posted February 9, 2024 sort of shades of the Gurriel deal 7/$22M for a 23 year old vs. 5/$32M for a 27 year old The Cubans are willing to give the team some upside on a longer term deal in exchange for a decent chunk of guaranteed money A bit different from the Japanese/KBO players who sometimes try to just get decent money and the chance to opt out or be a free agent ASAP

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2024 Posted February 9, 2024 Otto Lopez, hmm... thought if they were going to punt anyone it would be that dud Parsons, good news anyhow. What a disappointing season for Otto last year, especially after he looked so good in the WBC to start
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2024 Posted February 9, 2024 Wow I didn't realize Lopez was that bad in 2023. A 65 wRC+ in AAA where offense was up and no options in 2024. This was inevitable. Hopefully, Rodriguez pans out in whatever role he ends up in. That contract has a lot of surplus value potential if he becomes something.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2024 Posted February 9, 2024 Seems like a decent chance he gets through waivers. Just glancing at garbage teams like the A's and he's probably not even an improvement over what they have. Or look at a team like the Marlins who are on the lookout for infielders and they have about a dozen guys just as good as Lopez.

Although.... the models still have him as an above replacement level player, obviously on the strength of his minor league numbers before 2023. .250 .306 .336 .251 .305 .337 ^ one of those is Otto Lopez per ZiPS. Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2024 Posted February 10, 2024 I'm convinced Mark Shapiro hit IKF with his car intoxicated. And instead of a lawsuit gave him this contract. Only thing that makes sense.
