The guy is mercenary. He will go to whoever pays a nickel more than the next team.

Soto - Judge - Stanton go back to back to back today. Judge with another 2 HR game.

Fifth player ever with 3 50+ HR seasons, and only Ruth is not tainted by roids (others are Sosa, McGwire, and A-Rod).

What's weirder is that the King of everyone's steroid butthurt, Bonds, only topped 50 once when he hit 73

It's hard to hit 50 when you walk 232 times (120 intentional).

Jesus Sanchez yesterday was intentially walked, he started down the line but stopped before reaching 1B stood there for a few seconds and was replaced by a pinch runner. He was ruled out because he never touched 1st. Good catch by Craig Counsell.

How did the Pirates fix Joey Bart? 133 wRC+ in over 200+ PA's now. He couldn't even hit at AAA while he was with the Giants.

Yeah he's had a real nice season with the Pirates. Doesn't get talked about enough.

Not sure if you are being sarcastic here... but do you think the Pirates didn't fix him? Do you think this was random or he fixed himself?

(sorry if it wasn't sarcastic, seems from a few of your comments you are skeptical that coaching staffs have a lot of control over hitter outcomes)

I have no idea what's changed. Could be something he did on his own this offseason, could be working with new coaches, or could be random statistical SSS noise.

The Pirates are moving Oneil Cruz to CF permanently

Sneakily putting up a solid 3 WAR season with elite hard hit ball rates, coming off major injury. He's like if present day Giancarlo Stanton was also an excellent baserunner and could play a valuable position.

I just read this

"Pirates manager Derek Shelton said that Oneil Cruz will start seeing some time in center field. It makes some sense. The talented 25-year-old has a -3 Outs Above Average at shortstop this season and has a -13 mark for his career. If you prefer Ultimate Zone Rating (UZR) then he has a -3.4 mark in that and if you like Error Runs Above Average (ErrR) then he sits at -3.9. Essentially, he has been a below-average shortstop, and the Pirates are recognizing that. Cruz is 6'7" which is not common for centerfielders, but moving to the outfield is likely the best chance for Cruz to remain on the field as an everyday player for the long term. There’s no indication of how soon this will take place"

Will IKF take over at SS?

Most likely, with Williams as the backup.

Holy crap Aaron Judge just absolutely robbed Chaparro of a HR, then doubled Wood off at first. What a stud.

Also Jazz Chisolm now has 4 errors in his last two games at 3B. The transition is not going well

Interesting little article from Fangraphs on RE24 based WAR. I'd always thought that "when" you get the hits was somewhat outside of the batters control (hence why it's really hard to be "clutch" year after year), but that's essentially what RE24 is based on. Curious what others think. This metric suggests Vlad (3.74) and Varsho (3.65) are similar in WAR because Varsho has been so "clutch" this year.

I asked Tom Tango about clutch stats last year on here, it's basically noise from year to year, with impact being negligible...

Even if you are able to determine the clutch skill in time, its impact is so muted (like I said, much less than the platoon advantage) that it makes it NOT ACTIONABLE.

So, in the end, what we have is:

- yes, clutch skill exists

- it takes a long time to find it

- its magnitude is small

- which makes it not actionable

Personally, I like using RE24 with relievers used in the fireman role, I believe Yimi was our best guy in that role with runners on.

He also brings it up here for defense...

Right, the bath water position is a political position.

We have been very very good in showcasing stats at a pretty granular level. Just because we don't do one or two things doesn't mean you can discard the other three or four things that we DO do.

We don't consider batting with runners on base to be different from bases empty. If you want that, that's fine. Use RE24. That's WHY it exists! It's to give folks a choice.

For things that we don't have at all, like scooping, feel free to add 2 or 3 runs to one fielder while ALSO subtracting 2 or 3 runs to another fielder. You will find that your ultimate conclusion is not going to change, not unless you have two players who are close to begin with.

I loved the line about how Richards was a 3 pitch pitcher: fastball, changeup and wild pitch.
