I think the Tigers are good now

Their SP quality and depth is good enough to compete in that division.

Their lineup could be if Keith and Meadows are immediately good, and if Greene/Torkelson/Carpenter all maintain from 2023.

Pen is meh but that doesn't matter much.

Feels like a dumb move by the O's. Bring him up from day 1 and he has every chance to be ROY or 2nd in voting and net them yet another gift draft pick, not to mention that he's really f***ing good and would make their team better.

asset management, baby

ramon urias and jorge mateo both have 0 options left

Theoretically it doesn't change much with it. The amount in deferred money should already be scaled to an inflation number like Ohtani's contract is (the reason it's 700M instead of the 460M). It has more to do with the team's budget and actual accounting than the CBT I think.

It's massaging the egos of the players/agents too. JD/Boras can say he got 12 million even though todays value is really much less.

With Shohei's contract it helps the teams budget the first two years but in year three they have to start paying into an escrow fund for Ohtani's deferment.

If trying to ensure they dont lose Ramon Urias or Mateo is the reason for keeping Holliday down... my god that's Colorado level stupid. Both are pushing 30 and are probably bench guys going forward.

Atkins got the jump on them by trading Espinal to Cinci first. Atkins is always thinking ahead.

It would 100% be the reason

Holliday has good projections so they are definitely the better team if they cut one of them and install JH as starting 3B

I don't know how they could argue that he needs to work on anything in AAA.

Holliday might end up in the opening day lineup. They have time to swing a deal.

And i dont mean to suggest that Urias and Mateo arent useful players, they definitely have useable skills, especially defense and speed for Mateo, but that bat is like IKF-lite.

Urias has a good hit tool, but little pop, little speed and maybe average to slightly below average D. He's basically a hollow babip-fueled average hitter.

If I was in Baltimore's shoes, I'd keep Mateo and ditch Urias however they could. Gunnar at 3rd, Holliday at SS and Westburg at 2b, Mateo on the bench.

If that were the case, why would they tell him today that he hasn't made the team?

I think they have far too much confidence in Ryan O'Hearn being a major league baseball player. I know he was solid last year, but that's the only time since a cup of coffee in 2018 that he's been worth rostering. He is there version of Chris Colabello.

That kind of scenario is where a team like Tampa shines. Get a great season out of a nobody, then trade him for a useful return from some team that doesn't know any better before he turns back into a potato

I'm sure they told him the stock line "Unless something changes"

Plus Holliday doesn’t have a ton of experience at 2B, if they think that’ll his position going forward maybe they want him to get a couple weeks of everyday reps there

Perez will begin the season on the 15-day injured list after being diagnosed with right elbow inflammation, Craig Mish and Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald report.

This qualifies as good news, as Perez was cleared of any structural damage in his pitching elbow and will not require surgery. He will, however, still be sidelined for several weeks while the inflammation subsides. If there's a silver lining -- beyond the lack of structural damage -- Perez's recurring fingernail issue will have more time to heal. Fantasy managers should prepare to be without the 20-year-old for at least the first month or so, but a clearer timetable figures to be available in the coming weeks.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo told the club’s beat that left-hander Eduardo Rodríguez has been shut down from throwing due to a left lat strain, with Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic among those to relay the news. The lefty will open the season on the injured list but his timeline is unclear apart from that.

Why do you think it's a "loophole", mikey?

do you not believe in contractual freedom?

do you not believe in the basic accounting logic behind the net present value of money?

what is being dodged? why is it unfair?

And why does Steve Cohen of all owners feel the need to do this?

AAV is being dodged. Ohtani's AAV is 46M on a 700/10 contract. JDM's AAV is 9M on a 1 year 12.M deal. It allows teams like the Dodgers and Mets whose owners allow endless money to be spent to spend even more because they're keeping the tax bill lower.

I get what you're both saying though. We wouldn't have a problem with this deferrals thing if the Jays spent money like the Dodgers or Cohen Mets.

Nothing is being dodged. This is how all businesses operate, and public agencies make investment decisions. Time value of money is a thing.

Chourio too, damn.

Feels like we’re seeing a lot more teams rolling with top prospects on opening day. Guess the new CBA rules have made a difference

Did I miss the discussion on this? Lindor called for obstruction at 2nd base? Of course this has been met with all kinds of criticism. The same people who lost their minds when baseball eliminated the take out slide at 2nd base, running the catcher at home, pitch clocks, shift restrictions, larger bags, etc. are all up in arms about this. Personally, I like the idea that defenders shall not block the path to the bag and runners shall not be permitted to run through someone who's blocking the path to the bag at any base.

Like all the other rules, I suspect we'll see people losing their minds for a few weeks and then we'll rarely see or hear anything about it again.

That all said - this example was awful for the perception, as the throw beat the runner by 3 hours. Lindor and other infielders will need to adapt (which they will - everyone has adapted to all the new rules) and simply avoid this in the future.

Chourio signed a contract, he was making the team, no doubt.

Yeah you just KNOW there's gonna be some crazy arguments about obstruction calls like this during the first few weeks. We'll see how it plays out.

I’m curious if the defender is still allowed to aggressively make contact with the runner or is that assault?
