Ohtani Thread - Special Sheriff's Edition (Update: confirmed going to the Dodgers)

If he doesn't care much about money that would be the biggest waste of time lol. I read when he was in Japan making 2.4M a year his parents would only deposit 1K a month into his bank account and live off that lol.

Yeah it's crazy how frugal the guy was. And on top of that he lived in the team dorms as he was strictly eat sleep baseball. The guy will likely be a billionaire by the time he retires so hopefully he has since allowed himself to actually spend some of his money.

It's looking like the trip to the Dunedin complex could have been for a physical, in which case this could be a done deal and they're just waiting for the right time to announce. Atkins dropped off the Soto train in a hurry and this could be why. A deal done in principle could have already happened. I think it did. Hold your breath time.

At this point railing a bunch of cocaine would likely be better for my heart compared to the stress of waiting on an Ohtani decision.

Everyone cares about money

Even rich people almost always want more money

Dodgers have been preparing for this for over a year now. Would be awful sweet for the Jays to grab him instead. Not often are the Dodgers outmaneuvred. For this alone, Atkins is GM of the Year.

There is so much smoke circulating it's hard not to be really excited about the possibility. There is a flood of circumstantial evidence (much if not most of it unverified of course) that it's increasingly painting a picture of Ohtani potentially signing with the team.

This includes:

-ex Blue Jay Vernon Wells posting about knowing something juicy about Ohtani

-Ohtani flying to Dunedin to check out training complex

-same plane Ohtani uses flying from Anaheim to Toronto

-tons of online chatter with various insiders claiming Toronto increasingly likely to get Ohtani

-Kikuchi books entire sushi restaurant for tonight

-Yamamoto says he wants to play with other Japanese players and requesting meeting with team

-Asian buyer looking to snatch up several super high end Toronto area properties simultaneously

Did you make up the Kikuchi and highend property thing?

Well the dude here that posts with what he claims as knowledge from somewhere in the jays org say the Jays believe their offer is higher than that Dodgers. Obviously they cannot be sure of that. I think the number he had posted was 12/570.

If it needed to go to 12/600, sure do it. I dont think it will come down to the money though. No matter where he signs he and the next 10 generations of his family (assuming no zombies...)are set for life. I think he makes the decision based on where he feels he will be most comfortable in a baseball and family sense.

If he thinks being in LA is better, he'll stay there. If he truly loves the idea of moving to TO and then having access to the baseball facilities in Dunedin, being a hero to 2 countries rather than 1, and essentially becoming the face of Roger's Communications... he'll pick Toronto.

Keep in mind, there will almost certainly be an opt out clause. Whether that's after 2-3-4 seasons, who knows...but I'm sure there will be a way for him to bail if he determines that he made a mistake or the team isn't living up to their end of the bargain (i.e. creating a championship calibre team).

After year two makes the most sense, give him a chance to pitch again before deciding if he wants to FA again.

No this is something that's been circulating today. Someone is this thread posted about it earlier hence my disclaimer about this information being unverified.

If Dodgers miss out think of the dollars that both the Yanks and the Dodgers are going to be throwing at Soto when he is a free agent next year.

bet365 stopped betting and jays were fav at that time.

I will try to see if betfair has market on it using vpn. (no betting on betfair either)

Also. Some Random guy on Twitter claims he has contacts in immigration and they are working on a visa for Ohtani.

Not sure if this would be legit. Do you really have to get the visa before signing. I don't know. If I am coming over to University of Toronto to teach in their women's studies department to give a course on toxic masculinity (with the evolution of this board as a prime example) and will be getting 300k for 6 months work do they have to approve me for Visa first if I am coming in from Wichita KS?

A bit off topic but the course is great. Really goes through the evolution of a lot of you fellows after the board reached peak toxic level in 2020, and then a bunch of the alpha-fems made new rules to make it a safer place.

Fanduel also removed theirs. I bet $1 at +150 just so I could financially benefit from this. Still a bit sour I didn't pull the trigger at +4,000 on The Score last week (FD always had the Jays at +1,500 or less).

He wants a sub .500 clause. Back to back under .500 and he gets an opt out. This was a reporters suggestion not a legit demand but it is a fun clause

So did the G5 take off on time? Dodgers didn’t create a runway incursion with a dump truck full of green backs.

It's been in the air for 42 minutes.
