Laika Community Moderator Posted August 16, 2024 Posted August 16, 2024 This chunk of the Fangraphs Vlad article is brutal (sad) The one thing the Blue Jays needed last season was a star-caliber performance from their star-caliber player. Their pitching staff finished fifth in the majors in WAR, and their defense won the AL team Gold Glove. The offense, however, came up short too often, finishing 14th in baseball in runs scored. In 2023, a superstar season from Guerrero was all the Blue Jays were missing. This year, in a bitter twist of fate, it’s just about all they have.
Masterbather Verified Member Posted August 16, 2024 Posted August 16, 2024 I won't pay for anything... Except for Amazon Video... But only because I'm actually paying for Prime and they just happen to throw Video in for free. Otherwise, IPTV. Really? I guess I must have prime video then. Good to know I do have Apple music despite being an Android user. That, prime and Microsoft office I think are the only subscriptions I pay for anything.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2024 Posted August 16, 2024 I wouldn't, but I still don't want to pay for f***ing Apple TV. Don’t you still get Apple TV for buying a pizza? Or did they graduate from that now?

We downgraded to the $6.99 ad version of Netflix, and haven't noticed the difference. I pay a few bucks a year for 500 GB of OneDrive cloud storage. Useful. We have a family YouTube Premium sub, $25 and the kids pay for it. YT Music is awesome, but doesn't play nice with the Amazon ecosystem. If you are paying for Prime, you also have endless photo (JPG, etc.) cloud storage. Warning, if you ever downgrade, they do not make it easy to download them en masse. I use goojara.to for all of my other streaming needs.

I used to have Netflix, but it was mainly for friends and family, I never really used it, then they did the geolocation thing and I dropped it and everybody got their own. I also pay for Google storage, forgot about that one. I use fmovies.co for any viewing needs but goojara seems pretty good too.

If you want the premium version where you can stream movies in 4K, it's like $20 something per month. I also pay for Google Storage, like $2.99 a month or something along with Apple iCloud storage.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 Don’t you still get Apple TV for buying a pizza? Or did they graduate from that now? I don't understand why someone would get Apple TV. There really aren't any good movies available or superb series IMO. I tried a 3-month free trial of Apple TV+ because I wanted to watch Napoleon, and watched a couple episodes of Presumed Innocent, but otherwise didn't see much of a great selection of movies or series when scrolling through the app. Unless if you're a big Ted Lasso fan lol.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 If it makes you feel any better, it wouldn't really have mattered much. Would have given them 3 extra wins. And maybe a different wild card opponent. If his performance since May 1st was real and long term, it could make a difference in a close playoff series. One bomb. A couple of walks changes that series. However I think the long term level of performance is more relevant for playoff games, where he will be heavily scouted. Like if the hot streak is an adjustment, but there is a re-adjustment that the pitchers will make soon enough, that re-adjustment would likely be made for the heavily game-prepped playoff games. If the hot streak isn't a 'hot streak' but a more long term fixed and he his headed for a remarkable 5 year stretch (sadly much of it for the Red Sox)... then it would make a difference for a playoff game in a statistical sense.

Presumed Innocent was a good series. Not sure that’s worth getting an Apple TV sub but I’d recommend the show itself.
The_DH Verified Member Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 What IPTV provider do you folks use? I just go to a local provider, $15/month. The vendor is Infomir or something like that. I usually get even the Apple games, this last one though didn't come up. It's not the easiest for searching for programs and too many languages that I don't give a F about.
Barrelsandbombs Verified Member Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 Bassitt made some interesting comments in an interview recently: Q: If you sat down at the end of the year, or even right now and said, where did it go wrong? How would you explain it to Blue Jays fans? A: Yeah. I mean, I'll say this. I've been a part of four organizations. The four organizations I've been a part of, they all have had a lot of problems. Others have had a lot of problems, a lot of problems. I think we do a lot of things right here. But to me, everybody has issues. It's just like I don't want to be one of those guys that talk about the team's issues publicly. I see players do it, and I don't want to identify the problems because some of the problems I don't think are fixable The one thing I will say about the Blue Jays for this year is, we put, I think, $700 million into Shohei Otani's basket and didn't get them. That was the reality. And then I think our pivot was, we really didn't have a pivot https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/chris-bassitt-thinks-vlad-guerrero-jr-will-be-a/id1555532184?i=1000665856903

He says the Jays didn't have a pivot after missing out on Ohtani and does admit something about the landscape and such. I'd love to know if he thinks there was a legit pivot even available (which some have opined that there wasn't really one). I'm also curious when he says that some of the problems aren't fixable. Wonder what he means by that (can't fix them because certain people are in charge and/or aren't changing?, or some players don't have the talent or ability to change? or there are issues globally that simply don't have a solution?, or something else?).
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 Pretty good Bassitt interview, he seems to enjoy these and is fairly open and honest

I still got Bell TV but use IPTV as my secondary box for movies/shows/ppvs/sports.

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 Thanks for sharing, that was a great interview. The fact that he feels there are "unfixable" problems in the Org is a bit alarming. Seems to go on to say he respects the coaches and players but dislikes certain people in the front office... So. Who are the guesses for "problem people" in the FO right now? Is it Atkins? Shapiro himself?
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 I feel like when he says that certain problems aren't fixable he is mostly talking about players being bad or old
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 I feel like when he says that certain problems aren't fixable he is mostly talking about players being bad or old It seemed to me he was alluding to the front office IMO. Or just the fact that he knows players don't really wanna sign with Toronto because Canada Bad
BatFlip Verified Member Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 I feel like when he says that certain problems aren't fixable he is mostly talking about players being bad or old That was my takeaway as well. Especially when he said he "loves the guy he plays with" and he would want to protect them not hurt them with any further comment.
The_DH Verified Member Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 The tax situation in Canada is pretty bad right now compared to the US rates so getting good players to sign here is an uphill battle.
