Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 I dunno. With the volatility of relievers it's questionable to cut a guy like Merryweather and keep guys like Cimber. Valid to criticize Toronto on this one. Why let a guy with extreme "stuff" walk and keep certain others who are at best middle relievers? Cimber was coming off 1.2 and 0.9 WAR seasons with sub 3 ERA's with 70+ innings per. I know that looking at past results for relivers isn't a great indicator for future success, but Merryweather's inability to stay healthy had to play a big role in this also. Hard to keep the guy with no options who can't stay healthy and has never produced much of anything when healthy when you're trying to win. Should we have kept the Fernandez guys (the 2 minor league invites) on the team too over Cimber? They both have big time stuff and may at some point put it together for a year or 2.

Yeah the health issue was always front and center with Merryweather. A guy who is out of options, can't stay on the field, and showed no ability to retire major league hitters is a tough guy to hang onto despite the tantalizing raw stuff. I honestly hope he's able to turn his career around and have sustained success, but chances are extremely high he'll eventually end up missing a huge chunk of the season due to soft tissue injury. If I recall correctly he essentially missed an entire season due to an oblique injury, so this is a guy who has had a really hard time healing from injuries that keep popping up.

Valid to criticize Toronto on this one. Why let a guy with extreme "stuff" walk and keep certain others who are at best middle relievers? Easy to say that now but Cimber was getting such crazy good results that it would have been insanity to cut him and keep a guy who couldn't stay healthy and wasn't effective when he was. And it's not like Cimber was a total fluke either. He threw over 70 innings in each of those years and had solid statcast data on top of it. The guy looked like our version of Darren O'Day. And it's too early to bury Cimber anyway. He might be a non-tender candidate given his status as a middle reliever but he's only got 18 innings so far this year and he's been dealing with an injury. I wouldn't be surprised to see him have a good second half.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 Ah s***, I hadn't looked at Merryweather's stats in quite a while. Of course he figured it out and has managed to stay healthy the second he is out of a Jays uni.

He started the season averaging about 84 MPH on his fastballs and more recently has been having a few games where he's reaching upwards of 87 MPH.
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 Yeah it would have been insane to cut Cimber. I guess it's just a minor roster mismanagement issue. Toronto had no choice but to cut Merryweather. It's just too bad they were in that situation where the bullpen was full of mostly dudes with mid-reliever upside.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 Too bad Bass didn't have his Twitter melt down before they cut Merryweather.

Valid to criticize Toronto on this one. Why let a guy with extreme "stuff" walk and keep certain others who are at best middle relievers? Agreed. Cimber has been good since coming to Toronto but I'm not sure he's a guy you want to hold on to for years given his age, lack of velo, and lack of swing/miss. I feel like maybe they could have sold high on him after his 2022 season (wouldn't get much back either way), but one thing about Atkins is he always tends to sell big league talent at either the lowest value or damn close to it, so I guess we have to wait for Cimber to pitch his way off of the team before cutting bait. Though to Atkins' credit, his love for Trevor Richards is being validated so far.

Can’t really get upset about losing guys like Merryweather between his inability to stay healthy and struggles. They had to cut bait at some point. They were patient with him a long time. It just took a little longer. Good for him.

wamco Verified Member Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 Richards would have been cut before Cimber
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2023 Author Posted June 16, 2023 JD has 5 HR and one single in his 46 AB on the season, he's that beer league hitter who refuses to run the bases out of self preservation. .130/.212/.457

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2023 Author Posted June 16, 2023 Yankees are paying JD $21,750,000 this year plus an $8M buyout this off season, assuming they decline his $16M CO.

I want a custom built gaming PC with an RTX 4090 I have a custom build PC with an RTX 4090 Strix (my CPU is a i7-9800 so a couple of generations old) but it's mostly been collecting dust since I purchased a PS5.

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 1st gen so they can jailbreak it. I think these guys make enough dough that they can afford to buy the games.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 Samad Taylor the main piece in the Merrifield trade with KC just got called up to the big leagues. 34 steals in 62 games and has shown some pop and on base ability.

I'll be curious to see how he does. If he clicks at the big league level he's likely to be pretty similar to Merrifield with a worse hit tool but more power.

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 not more power Yeah maybe not, I was remembering that Taylor hit a bunch of jacks in AA a few years ago but that looked to be more of a single year anomaly.
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 yeah if anything he probably has less power than whit merrifield for most of his career had solid average pop. maybe not anymore

Always tracked him in the minors and thought he’d get a chance before this. Was glad the rule V didn’t happen the one year and we were able to keep him. Jays didn’t seem overly bullish on him though. Excited to see how he will do.
