New rules changes are coming!

Everything sounds so minor it won't even be noticed.

The new runner's lane to 1B makes sense.

It's damage control. The other options are Matt Chapman for 9 years or trading Tiedemann for Evan Longoria

That would suck to lose your top prospect when you sign a free agent!

That said- I think there’s like 33 pct chance that longo is indeed signed .

Probably a valid comparison, but Kemp was serviceable from age 26-29. If Lantiqua can do the same thing as a backup/injury replacement 9th best player it's fine

Hey olerud- thought of you yesterday. 27 years ago yesterday we traded olerud for Robert person. Just a reminder that we threw in 5m as a sweetener for the Mets to make that trade.

Did you know we also signed stieb to an 11 year contract back in the day with deferred money in it?

On a 1yr deal does it matter? Worth a gamble like Belt was

Belt had really strong projections.

Ironically, Belt is a bigger gamble NOW coming off his 138 wRC+ than he was last year coming off his 98 wRC+. His K rate in 2023 was a huge age red flag, whereas his 2022 numbers were clearly just depressed because of the knee injury and the two prior years he was a f***ing stud offensively.

Duvall is kind of just a hacker who ran into more hits than usual in 2023... I think. Pham > Duvall IMO.

It's also Tom Henke's 66th birthday today!

Man - Olerud for Person was f***ing terrible. You guys bitch about the Moreno deal - Olerud gave the Mets 18.3 WAR over 3 seasons (including 8.1 WAR in his 2nd year there), while Person had an ERA of about 6 and 0 WAR combined in 2 seasons with the Jays. I guess the fact that Olerud only had 1 year of control left may prevent this from being THE WORST trade in Blue Jays history, it's still alarming we traded one of the better 1st basemen of all time, who was just 27 - for a bag of balls.

1. I don't think he's a proven ace at all.

2. I think teams know he was lucky last year. His LOB% and BABIP is not sustainable (LOB% was 10% above his career average last year, BABIP, over 30 points below). Those resulted in an abnormally low ERA, which essentially won him the Cy Young.

3. The walks scare teams. They simply do.

4. I suspect his asking price is sky high coming off a Cy Young win (that he shouldn't have won) and very few teams believe that's actually the pitcher they'd get in a long term, high $$$ deal.

Yeah Belt can do some damage still. Generally love his abs.

The fact that any pitcher warming up prior to an inning MUST throw to at least 1 batter is interesting. Like, what would happen if you have 2 guys warming, but the first guy that goes in gets all 3 outs because the other guy was only intended to throw to the #4 hitter up that inning if it got that far? Would that mean that they would purposefully have to wait to start the second guy warming until the start of the inning? What if the first guy gets two quick outs and then a 1 pitch single? Will the second guy then have to come in without being ready or would the manager then have to just let the first guy try and get #4 in what's likely an unfavourable matchup? I have trouble understanding the purpose of that particular change.

This is from ESPN regarding the "pitcher warming up" rule:

Barring an injury, a pitcher who begins to warm up at the start of an inning will now be required to face at least one batter. Previously, they could be replaced during or after warmups. The league said there were 24 instances last season where the pitcher that warmed up between innings was replaced before throwing a pitch -- adding approximately three minutes of dead time.

Love it. I'm waiting for the day that any pitcher entering the game is given no warm up pitches. That's what those pitches in the bullpen should be for. There are so many rules in baseball meant to slow the game down that can be removed.

I think they mean the warmup pitches on the mound, not in the bullpen.

Yamamoto apparently signing with the Dodgers for over $300m. No Passan tweet yet but everyone else seems to be running with it.

Either way, if it’s true, then maybe the off season can finally start.

Dodgers rotation:

Glasnow

Yamamoto

Buehler

Miller

Yarbrough/Sheehan

They have a standing offer to Kershaw. Kershaw accepts, Sheehan likely to AAA which is nuts.

The big question is - how much money is deferred?

Gonna be pretty disgusting if the Dodgers skirt the luxury tax on this deal too

Must be fun being a Dodgers fan.

I think the Jays should probably sit out Bellinger and Chapman - they aren't good enough to put the team over the top - use the money next off-season to get someone worth getting.
