Laika Community Moderator Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 I share the sentiment that I don't want to see a game end on a stupid technicality, even if the pitch clock is 90% positives right now. Instead of extensions and similar ideas, maybe something in the vein of fouls to give like in the NBA. For the first 7 innings, the violation comes with a penalty. After the 7th, you have three "violations to give". If your team messed up four times, you kind of deserve to lose the game on a technicality. Something like that might work. Even if it's just a "double fault" system for both teams in the 9th inning and on. i.e., your first fault is forgiven after the 8th inning but all subsequent ones are penalized.

If it's a balk, it's a balk, if you're not in the box, too bad. Players have an entire season + spring training to get used to this. if they can't get used to a rule having 600+ PAs with it, I have little sympathy for them. Would it suck? absolutely. Just like it sucked the other 23 times in baseball history than ended with a walk-off balk. I think people are just imagining in their heads that this problem is somehow going to be rampant and so many games will be decided like this - when that's extremely unlikely. In the minors last season, when the rules were first used, there were about 4 violations per game. After 2 weeks there was less than 2 violations per game. The number keeps going down the longer the rules are in place. By the time any of this matters in the playoffs, it wont be a concern. People are actually inventing hypothetical rage.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 Maybe they could just turn the pitch clock off in the 9th inning if the score is within 3 runs or something
philly30 Verified Member Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 (edited) We should probably remove balk calls and runner/defensive interference too as we don't want to see games end like that either Those are rare, and I have seen pitchers that should have been called for a balk but have not in those late inning situations, difference here is there is a clock, people can easily see the violation, where with a balk or interference it is more discretionary Edited February 27, 2023 by philly30

There is a 0% chance I believe this happens. I mean an umpire may "miss" a balk call, but there's no way I'm going to believe that they see the balk and choose not to call it (as this would also require the other umpires on the field to see and then make the same non-call on purpose). It was just posted above that 23 games have ended on balk calls MLB history. Did those umpires forget to not call them in absolutely the most impactful time of the game (ie, where a balk ends the game)? Balks are rare because pitchers know they are against the rules and the work hard to avoid breaking the rules. The same thing will happen with the pitch clock - especially when the game is on the line. Edited February 27, 2023 by Brownie19

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 I think you mean "when Russell Martin threw the ball into Choo's bat" There is zero grey area there. Just people not knowing the rules You're welcome to your own interpretation, but use whatever example you think applies. The point still stands.
PhillyBlueJay Verified Member Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 I mean - didn't we always hear about how awesome it was to watch Greg Maddux, Mark Buehrle and Doc pitch? Didn't people love how much more pace the game had because these guys would just get it and throw it and you could have games complete in just over 2 hours? I know we're talking about 3 great pitchers, but I think that's the type of pace we're hoping to get. It keeps the defense on their toes more too. Maybe it's easier to put it this way. I never heard someone complain that the games those guys started "went too fast". I certainly hear LOTS of people complain when the Yankee/Red Sox playoff games go 4+ hours (I complained about those also) and while I know they increase the commercials and such in those games - they still f***ing took forever. Is that the type of game you'd rather see? I sure don't. I fully expect once players adjust, it will be a huge positive for baseball. Poor Nomar garciaparra with the Red Sox, if he was around now he would have to retire with all the touching of his body and toe taps between pitches. Jesus, league should have cracked down back then!!!
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 He wanted to outright pick the Reds to win the WS but it was too bold. So instead he had to come up with a more realistic scenario in which they can win it all in an abbreviated season.

Im going with Mike Hargrave....aka the Human Rain Delay! I forget who the announcer was but he jokingly said they're going to run commercials between pitches when Hargrave was at bat.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 Yeah I've though of him a couple of times during all this pitch clock talk. What about Pedroia and his tic?

BTS Community Moderator Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 What the f*** is this ******** At least Lux is basically replacement level in 20-team leagues, so this shouldn't hurt you.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 Yes to pretty much all of this. I enjoy this part of the game especially in a big game situation. Maybe it’ll still feel the same. Hopefully it will. It'll be fine, personally I love the pace of play.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2023 Posted February 28, 2023 Could just be meniscus Might not be a ligament... Possibly, sure looked ugly. Both he and Glasnow to have MRI's tomorrow, as expected.
