I mean - they need their eyes checked if they can't see that baby. A tad smaller would be nice.

I assume there's another clock in the OF that the home plate ump/catcher can see too? Is it only the plate ump who makes calls? or can a base ump call a violation also?

IIRC home plate umps will also have a buzzer that will go off to alert them.

I don't have the video, but the first violation was called on Manny Machado (surprise, surprise) for being too f***ing slow getting in the box. The umps points at him and clearly stats the count is 0-1, but of course the broadcasters can't figure out what happened, thought he pointed at the catcher and assigned a ball.

IG comment section is going off - most of which didn't catch the violation was on Manny - screaming this is stupid and the catcher didn't do anything wrong. What a s*** show. It's going to take several weeks for players, fans and broadcasters to adjust.

"I'm going to have to make a big adjustment," Machado said afterward during the game broadcast. "I might be down 0-1 a lot this year ... there's definitely an adjustment period, but I went down in history books."

Video in the story. He was in the box but definitely not "alert to the pitcher" at 8 seconds

I like the rule. Don't care for the distracting countdown clock

So the new MLB clock rule resulting in a free strike for the pitcher.... isn't that great? /sarcasm

i doubt it happens much, if at all, during the season

so I guess that means that it's possible to go 27 outs 27K's without ever throwing a pitch. Kind of like when Tippy Martinez got 3 outs at first base.

This rule has existed for years

Yes, it is.

It speeds up the game by shortening one if the least necessary, and most boring parts, the time between pitches.

Sounds like some classic overthinking to say the least

I think as a policy it’s a bit much and don’t agree, but anytime there’s some sort of human element brought up, your crowd will always get up in arms because they see baseball as more a statistical simulation with robot players. Robot players that can get broken parts anyway.

It’s probably not a bad idea for rookies and inexperienced guys. A veteran should understand it is what it is. When you’re younger, I’m sure there’s an invincibility thing that doesn’t lessen the blow if you get smacked around. Especially if you have a couple bad starts in a row

My crowd? Kindly dig up one statement of mine that would even remotely coincide with this claim of yours regarding my opinions.

I was just randomly tossing about the bomb. Generally speaking, anytime some sort of human element is discussed here, it’s trashed. Or anything that could be deemed “the old way of thinking”

So, the Rockies are going to rest their best players at home early in the season so they can save them for.. *checks notes*.. .when they have a sub .400 record in September.

Genius.

I think you have this backwards. Load management is the kind of thing the Rays would (do?) do in a data driven way and get praised for by sabr nerds and trashed by dinosaurs.

The Rockies just probably aren’t going to do this in an informed way and will end up being rightly trashed by sabr nerds and dinosaurs.

How is this real?

Smart. Give them less games where they hit well and more games where they blow.

People are liking the volley of yours but “aren’t going to do this in an informed way” suggests there may be a situation where you think it makes sense. That’s all I’m saying. I also think it’s terrible as a policy and we’ll see if it actually happens, which I wouldn’t bet on. 4D chess it could also be a plus if the intended effect is really to tamper down expectations in the pitchers minds

Like BTS stated, it seems more the opposite. The Rockies are trying to break away from the old way of thinking (which gave no regard to load management) but have swung the pendulum too far the opposite way.

Anyway it seems like we agree it's a strange and likely faulty line of thinking, whatever led to them assuming they improve their fortunes by sitting their best players at home.

Oh actually I slept in late and half read it from bed, I was thinking

it was talking about pitchers. Now I think it’s really stupid

I don’t get why they were talking about the psychological effect on opposing SP (assuming they meant when they get lit up)

So is there medical evidence that would support more wear and tear on Rockies players because they play their home games at altitude?

https://utswmed.org/medblog/high-altitude-training/#:~:text=As%20elite%20athletes%20acclimate%20to,when%20additional%20oxygen%20is%20available.

So the answer is yes, unless the athlete trains at high altitute in which cases its an overall benefit.

That’s the rub amigo. They have the advantage because they’re used to it. I can understand this as an East Coaster that moved to the general area

It's not clear. If Black is talking about pitchers only, there is logic to starting your better pitchers more on the road.

Yeah, that’s what I meant. I wouldn’t have defended hitters

I mean, think about it in the eyes of all us fantasy managers. Like, should I start or stream this guy pitching at Coors? Lol. So I can understand a team at least considering someone’s confidence and being aware of that.

Smart move by Rockies. As the year progresses they stop hitting because they see more and more stuff at home and it doesn't do the same on the road.
