$233M, so technically we’re over.

Yup. The first year we are over we pay 20% of the overage to the league. Of that 20% the teams that stay under get half of it. Every consecutive year over the cbt threshold the payment penalty goes up. Ie. in the second year over we would pay 30% and the third year over we would pay 50%.

Thanks peeps.

It'll be interesting to see how much more they spend.

That $233,600,000 number also includes Ryu, and IIRC they have that insured so while they are still over the threshold, they at least have some $$ coming from insurance.

A Jansen trade could get the jays comfortably under the threshold

Jansen for Alek Thomas is my pick and then signing a RP to round out the offseason.

Hopefully all of that keeps us under.

When does the Draft Pick penalty kick in? Is it 4th year of repeat offenders?

Clubs that are $40 million or more above the threshold shall have their highest selection in the next Rule 4 Draft moved back 10 places unless the pick falls in the top six. In that case, the team will have its second-highest selection moved back 10 places instead.

You can basically assume how these trade conversations have been going with Arizona.

Would you trade Varsho or Carroll?

No. We aren't willing to do that. Do you like Alek Thomas?

He's okay. Prospect models like him but his MLB debut was concerning for many reasons. Do you mean to propose Thomas for Jansen?

No. We'd need Kirk or Moreno to move Thomas.

Yikes.

As the deputy pointed out against scorn, I said 1/9 for KK. Also i was in on Kk signing to begin with. F “belly”.

Actually just yesterday I opined elsewhere about interest in Johnny Cueto as a 1 year deal for SP5 would be preferable so we don’t block the dragon. And now it’s reported jays in on Cueto.

Also called a sizable piece of an off-season trade would be teo/lgj/c trade would be a prospect.

All Wamcos bitches waited with jaws wide open.

Both got facialized.

Steamer likes Thomas to improve to a 107 WRC+ for 2023. Combined with his defence he'd be a great long term piece, but moving Kirk or Moreno on the assumption that he is going to eventually fulfill his potential is a massive gamble.

This is like Todd returning from beyond the grave to grace us with his presence.

This is what everyone should have expected for KK, given that Tampa cut him for 1/10.5

Good signing.

Its too bad Dave Stewart isn’t in charge anymore. He’d probably do Carroll for Jansen and Gurriel or something silly

Arizona would have to add something good (like Pfaadt) if they want a trade centered around Kirk and Thomas.

Pfaadt is quite the name, I'd hate to hazard a guess for how that would be pronounced.

Yeah, that last bit would end the call for me. The values don't line-up at all.

He is probably my main target, but we don't need to trade anyone. We definitely hold the cards.

He probably would yes lmao.

Jays luxury payroll estimate is now $233,607,143 according to FG with the Keirmaier contract.

What's the threshold for luxury tax again?

Not accurate. FanGraphs has 7.2M earmarked for league min players. The Jays only have room on the roster for four league min players (Manoah, Kirk, Moreno and a fourth bench bat like Barger). That's like 3.2M on the high end.

I'm guessing FanGraphs is overestimating because when a guy like Springer goes down with injury and you call up Nathan Lukes or whoever, you have to pay him league min for the time he's up. But because that's not remotely predictable, there's no point calculating minutiae like that halfway through the offseason.

Whenever they trade Jansen and get rid of Thornton and Richards, they'll have the space for those added league min costs.

In other words, consider the Jays under the tax line for now.

Posted
Oh and FanGraphs is allotting $2.5M for 40-man roster minor leaguers while Cot's and Spotrac allot $2.25M. Both of those numbers are likely high. Unless the Blue Jays really enjoy paying their guys well above minor league minimum, the real spending there will probably come in around $1.6M, creating another ~$900K of space against FanGraphs' estimate.

I had thought there were IFA money impacts from going over the threshold. Maybe that's changed with the new CBA. Seems like more teams don't care about the threshold that much anymore.

The Blue Jays lost a 2nd round draft pick and $500K of their international signing budget when they signed Bassitt. They would have lost their 2nd and 5th round picks and $1M in international FA money if they were a luxury tax team last season. That's pretty much the only bearing the luxury tax has on IFA expenditures.

Hope the 500K they lost doesn't hurt their ability to sign Bonilla. Don't think it will but it would be ass if it did.

Ya, I'll be pissed if they lose out on Enmanuel Bonilla

I'm sure there was at least 500k+ that they had alloted for other players that can be used towards that? I mean they aren't giving all of the $$$ available to sign him, right?
