Atkins does not have the guts or the creativity to better this team by making smart moves.

And I don't think Rogers is giving him more money after all he spent last offseason for 1 extra win and 2 losses in postseason.

Expect a bit more dumpster diving for relief, another tapia-esque bat (if not bringing him back or keeping JBJ), maybe re-sign Stripling or just run the 5 we have until trade deadline to see what happens.

All we can really hope for is Bo to clean up his defense, Vlad to get his LA and plate discipline back, Teo/Springer/Danny to stay healthy, Gurriel to find some power, Kirk to find some speed and ability to throw out runners (both these facets are going to be extremely relevant next year with the changes) and not get fatigued by the end of the year, Pearson to stay healthy and get in the BP with hurling 100, Manoah not regressing to the mean, Kikuchi/Berrios finding some sort of consistency, Pop/White to becoming as advertised, Bass not regressing like he did near the end of the year for us, Martinez understanding that "pull everything to the SS" is not a good approach and preaching a bit more patience, etc...

That's a lot of ifs. We aren't going to address the ifs.

Atkins said this team would be ready to compete by 2021 (in his 2018 interview) and we have been - maybe he has a plan, but I think he's hoping to get lucky and and vindicated when all the ifs happen at the same time.

From the sounds of it, Stripling likes it here in Toronto; but if some team offers him 3/30M I doubt we match.

92 win team with a pretty good chance they can add at least a couple more wins just from Berrios (1.1 fWAR) and Vladdy (2.8 fWAR) improving even just a little bit.

They'll need to find a way to replace Stripling's 3.1 fWAR if he doesn't come back, but other that that I don't see anyone on the roster who is likely to regress a notable amount.

No need to panic and tear the thing apart. Just go out and add a high end starting pitcher if you can.

Hell, if they can sign a guy like Rodon and then bring back Chicken Strip, this team will be poised to push for 95-100 wins IMO

No way they're spending that much.

Much more likely a trade will have to be made if someone significant is brought in.

Whomever asked that question to Ross is a moron. What is the answer they're expecting? team has back to back 90+ win seasons. Yup definitely need to tear down and rebuild.... he's never going to bury any players publicly even if he did think moving a core player was necessary for any number of reasons.

Reporters are so.... unoriginal.

The only reason to ask that question of the Jays if is the reporter has an opinion column lined up with a clickbait headline about how the Jays need to tear down and rebuild, but the man in charge says no - cue the outrage clicks

Extend Vladdy for the reasons stated above

Fix Berrios

Upgrade the pen with two high leverage strikeout arms

Upgrade the 4th OF position to someone who can hit AND play defense. Tapia/JBJ/Zimmer are NOT good enough when you have Springer routinely missing 40+ games a year in CF!

When might Ryu pitch again?

Pretty bang on... lol.

Ryu, likely never again in NA professionally.

ETA: Ryu will be with the club next year obviously hang with the boys in uni once in a while. lol... he loves it in Toronto, who knows... :P

Watch Ryu throwing 96 MPH and providing 7 WAR next year.

He pitched to a 3.11 FIP this year. Matz got 4 and 44 and he wasn't near as good last year. We're now into an new CBA with much higher thresholds. He'll get more than 3 and 30 from some team.

I have a soft spot for Ryu. It's not out of the realm of possiblity he could return mid season. You woudn't expect it with an older guy, but it's hard to say. I'm pulling for him.

Would be nice to see Ryu contribute at some point in 2023 if he came back healthy. Definitely is some nice SP depth to have after the All-Star break.

Even a washed up Ryu throwing 88 is maybe better in the #5 spot than Mitch White or Yusei Kikuchi.

Or use none of them in the rotation and bring in someone else.

Needs to be completely revamped focus on the Bullpen. Velocity and swing and miss. Shouldn’t even look at anyone who is striking out less than 10 Strikeouts per 9 IP. No contact bullpen. Ideally you want a couple guys in the 12 range.

You mean more guys like Trevor Richards?

You just don't understand baseball. The SP5 spot is for anguish. There can be no pleasure without pain.

Last I heard about Joc he was chirping Trout about a fantasy football league, during a game. Real serious.

and he wears pearl necklaces instead that immature HR jacket. Joc is a consummate professional

Arizona has several interesting players. Thomas, Varsho (even K.Marte). If they want a catcher, than that seems like a good partner.

Adding a legit CFer and pushing Springer to RF and Gurriel into the 4th OFer position would be a really nice upgrade and use of our surplus of catchers IMO. We have enough versatility to allow Gurriel to be our 4th OFer.

Would Moreno alone fetch a package of say Thomas with one of Jameson, Nelson, Pfaadt or Walston?

Ryu could possibly be a weapon out of the bullpen late next season. A guy you can bring in to start an inning and count on to throw 2+. He's always been best 1st time through the order. Ideal scenario is the time off and rehab process helps him get back to 2020 Ryu.

Can we pencil Ricky Tiedemann into the #5 spot to start the year?

I doubt it. They pulled the plug on him when he was in AA this season.

He'll probably start out in AAA and if he has a "2021 Manoah like" start to his AAA season he probably gets called up if the 5th slot isn't already filled. If it is they probably just let him stay down there until someone starts scuffling or gets injured. He's a lot younger than Manoah was when he started in AAA.

At least the season ending early means the renovations have already started.

what the f*** is happening in that picture? obviously taking out the seats, but that looks bizarre.

Looks like they removed the seats from the concrete floor, but the seats are all still attached together.

I guess the 200 OF level is being pushed back to make the 100s outfield more spacious and open

That's an interesting question. Thomas is just ahead in overall minor league numbers, but Moreno had his aa and aaa years cut short (when he could have put up big numbers).

Thomas hit horrible in 400 at bats in his first crack at mlb.

How much do these factors impact trade value? Do people care that Thomas struggled in the majors or that Moreno missed so much time?

Do they think Moreno's thumb injury sapped his power and if so is there any long term concern? Do they think that Thomas hitting .230 was just a fluke or that it indicates a weakness which lowers his future value?

All good questions. I mean Thomas has hit at every level in the minors without any major red flags and has the 2nd round pedigree behind him. Solid BB%, low K%, increasing ISO. I don't think his value collapses due to some initial struggles as a 22 year old. Similarly, Moreno actually climbed prospect rankings (albeit mainly because others graduated) despite the injury and the limp bat he showed in the minors.

It's an interesting concept. I'd probably rather move Jansen, but I doubt he hold this type of value given the lack of remaining control. If we're moving Kirk, I think we get a better package.

There definitely could be a match with the D-Backs. I mean, how many CF do you need? (Carroll, Thomas, Varsho, heck even Marte played 70 games in cf last year).
