glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Anyone have a link to the Atkins interview?
BlueJaysFever Verified Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Atkins when pressed about Merrifield only being a road player went on to say (paraphrased) that he doesn't expect that to be the case and that he wouldn't have made the move otherwise. Essentially it points to him allowing Merrifield himself to tell the media/fans that he will be getting vaccinated. Makes sense since it's a personal choice.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Thank you!! That's his presser after the deadline, not what you asked me about from Tim and Friends?
RustyTrombone Verified Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Fangraphs articles are soo ass. Dont know why anyone would bother to read them.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 What the hell is this analysis from Fangraphs on the Merrifield trade? "Reeks of irresponsibility"? That's a pretty bold accusation to assume that the Jays didn't do any homework on this simply because Ross Atkins declined to comment on a sensitive issue, one that Merrifield himself has already gotten plenty of heat for. Hah... who wrote that jargon, it had to be a commenter right?
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2022 Author Posted August 4, 2022 Hah... who wrote that jargon, it had to be a commenter right? Nope, author “ With the player summaries complete, there’s an elephant in the room I wish I didn’t need to address but is breathing down my neck, so here goes. Is Merrifield legally allowed to enter the country of Canada? It’s absurd that this question needs to be asked, but as we know all too well, a recent three-game series between the Blue Jays and Royals revealed that he had not been vaccinated for COVID-19, which is required for entry into Canada. Toronto has given a Merrfield a shot, yes, but can it give him the shot? As of this writing, there’s been no confirmation of Merrifield’s vaccination status. In an interview, Jays GM Ross Atkins declined to comment further on the matter, saying he would let Merrifield discuss it with his family. Based on the fact that he circumvented a simple yes/no question, it seems like the Blue Jays acquired Merrifield before confirming whether or not he would agree to a vaccine. If so, it’s a move that reeks of irresponsibility. I’m no GM, but I’d want my deadline acquisition to appear in front of the home crowd and not skip half the remaining games. It’s not as if the prospect of a U.S.-only Merrifield was accounted for in the acquisition cost, either. Parting with two 40 FV prospects for a utility bat, albeit an established one with bounce-back potential, is not a bargain.” What kinda moron thinks the GM of a multi-billion dollar sports franchise doesn’t bother to check this kind of thing before trading for him?
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2022 Posted August 4, 2022 That's some pretty f***ing awful sports journalism right there, for many reasons.

Yeah, I just read it, and the shitshow of comments... funny enough MLB Tonight were just discussing this situation. There seems to be the blame game going on to a problem that's unknown.

Personally, I think we all give people who get paid to write and talk about baseball FAR too much credit for being smart and knowing baseball.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2022 Posted August 4, 2022 This will be hilarious if it turns out Merrifield refuses to vax Reminds me of the Kyrie Irving situation Charles Barkley coined the nickname Half-Man Half-Season. God I love that man.

It's a very useful site between the stats and prospect content. They should just be a little more selective about who they let on to their writing staff. No doubt that some of their better/more respected prospect guys have rolled an eye or two at their other content.

Sorrow Verified Member Posted August 4, 2022 Posted August 4, 2022 I'd make the assumption Toronto had some sort of guarantee in place before the trade happened that Merrifield will get, or has gotten vaccinated. Toronto is not allowed to comment on this without the players permission.

TobiasFunke Verified Member Posted August 4, 2022 Posted August 4, 2022 Just mentioned in his media scrum that he’s vaxxed and will be in Toronto.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted August 4, 2022 Posted August 4, 2022 f***ing new it. He likely got vaxxed before the trade deadline so he could be traded without issues to the ALE contenders. The FO couldn't say anything as per their agreement with the MLBPA.

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted August 4, 2022 Posted August 4, 2022 lol so we don't have to burn Atkins at the stake for the chicken littles who actually thought he might trade assets for a player may never have played in Toronto? Shocking
