jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Tyler O'Neill is like Randal Grichuk with more speed and substantially less good looking. Don’t even know why we are talking about him. We definitely wouldn’t be if he wasn’t Canadian. I heard the word used this off-season by the Jays wanting to diversify the lineup more. We would literally be adding what we just shed to probably do a worse job lol Did Randal Grichuk ever put together a 5+ WAR season at the age of 25?
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 2022 is closer to his true performance level you dumbass. 2021 was the outlier. He has huge swing and miss issues. So yea.. let's f***ing trade the catcher who has been the best hitter on the team since June 2021 for f***ing "rich man's Tapia". Why do you assume that? He's only 27 years old and only played in 96 games last season because he wasn't 100%. It's not like he's in his 30's and his last good season was 4-5 years ago.

Probably because his only good season came with a .366 BABIP and a 30% k rate He trimmed his K’s by 4% and still had nowhere near the BABIP he had in 2021 Hard hard pass on Tyler O’Neil for Jansen.

I tend to agree with this. I'm only considering O'Neill if we've exhausted SEVERAL other options.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Any word on if Bellinger will be non tendered or not? I wonder if he would be a bargain bin target for the Jays for the CF they could use now? I don't know if I could stomach watching him try to get his offensive mojo back as a Jay.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Is there a deal to be made involving Jansen and Bryan Reynolds?
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Is there a deal to be made involving Jansen and Bryan Reynolds? Would be nice, but it would probably take Kirk or Moreno for Reynolds.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Would be nice, but it would probably take Kirk or Moreno for Reynolds. Moreno ++. Unfortunately the Pirates took a Catcher first overall so trading for a Catcher/DH like Kirk for them would probably be stupid. Reynolds still under control until 2026. It would take a s*** ton to pull him away.

Captain_Obvious Verified Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Pirates have 2 top 100 catchers, and Endy Rodriguez > Henry Davis +1 Pirates is not a good trade fit. It does not matter how much you like their players. Endy Rodriguez is a god damn monster.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Pirates have 2 top 100 catchers, and Endy Rodriguez > Henry Davis Holy f*** balls - Endy Rodriguez just tore a strip off the minors this past year....and apparently he's better known for his defense. From Fangraphs: Rodriguez’s defensive chops headline his profile, as he’s universally praised for his work behind the plate. He’s very athletic, and blocks and throws well, but it’s his intangibles — instincts, work with the pitching staff, game calling — that draw particularly rave reviews. As an example, one evaluator recalled a time when Rodriguez gunned a guy out at second, but skipped his throw in a way that looked intentional. When asked about it, he confirmed that he meant to bounce the throw “because he saw the shortstop get a late break” and wanted to give him an extra beat to reach the bag — you can’t teach that sort of thing. You can teach framing, however, which is good because it’s the element in Rodriguez’s game that needs the most refinement. He’s not a butcher back there, but his hands are noisy and have room for growth. Pittsburgh is not trading for one of our catchers. It's too bad T.Swaggs is busting for Pittsburgh or they could have a solid core coming up with Hayes, Reynolds, O'Neill, Rodriguez, Davis, Nick Gonzalez, R. Contreras, Peguero, etc.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Pirates have 2 top 100 catchers, and Endy Rodriguez > Henry Davis I’m not disagreeing but its why Kirk doesn’t make sense. Moreno could be easily moved position wise would be very intriguing for them. Hell the Blue Jays basically showcased his versatility at the end of the season.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 I don't think there is a dance partner for that kind of move. Some might say Daulton Varsho but mehhhhhhhhhhh Jansen for Alek Thomas+? Thomas has a great minors track record, is young, and just finished his 1st full MLB season. He could translate more in 2023?

He could translate more in 2023? Thomas will improve at the plate but the key here is he has a high floor due to elite CF defense.

Just have Moreno switch positions here.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 It's Jansen + for Alek Thomas I suspect. Could be yes, Jansen is older, often injured and less control. That said, the risk is that Thomas doesn't adjust and is replacement value for the all those years of control while Jansen's last couple years of control net 6+ fWAR regardless of injuries.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Why do the trade then? Just have Moreno switch positions here. Because I don’t think Moreno can play CF or hit for the power Reynolds can. Plus he’s a switch hitter.
Captain_Obvious Verified Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 Because I don’t think Moreno can play CF or hit for the power Reynolds can. Plus he’s a switch hitter. By that logic, it makes no sense from the pirates perspective then.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 By that logic, it makes no sense from the pirates perspective then. Yea but who gives a f*** about what makes sense for the Pirates. They have been doing dumb s*** forever.

Entire new FO, bruh. We're not a fit with the Bucs, unless we unload pitching on them for Reynolds, it ain't happening and people should let that train of thought, DIE!

We're not a fit with the Bucs, unless we unload pitching on them for Reynolds, it ain't happening and people should let that train of thought, DIE! The easy/lazy way to determine potential suitors for a catcher trade, is to look at the list of teams rumored/expected to be a fit for Willson Contreras. MLBTR has those as Red Sox, Diamondbacks, Rockies, Astros, Cardinals, Giants, Yankees, Twins, Marlins and Rays. Cancel out the Yanks and BoSox because f*** those guys, but among the other eight teams lies probably our best fit(s).

And its really looking like its coming down to the Cardinals and Diamondbacks who make the most amount of sense in terms of fit.

After tonight's trade, the D-Backs now have Carroll, Varsho, Thomas, McCarthy, and Lewis, plus some depth like Garrett and Fletcher in AAA. They look much more equipped to pull off a CF for CA trade than the Cardinals do. Just a matter of making the pieces fit.
mellowgold Verified Member Posted November 18, 2022 Posted November 18, 2022 So who are we thinking is the most likely to be a Blue Jay in the next few weeks? Thomas? Followed by Varsho? Carroll is the pipe dream I guess.
