Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 I don't get the love affair with Daulton Varsho. Yes he had a great season but f*** he's a league average bat with a terrible savant page. This is Blasphemy!! Go wash yourself with Holy water to cleanse you of your sins and repent son before it is too late!

Ehjays Verified Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/12/the-opener-swanson-blue-jays-padres.html When will the Blue Jays look to move a catcher? The Blue Jays have been open to dealing one of their catchers throughout the offseason, and with the free agent catching market thinning out by the day, the Jays’ catchers are the top remaining options on either the trade or free-agent markets. Most recently, Omar Narvaez agreed to a deal to join the Mets yesterday, and Mike Zunino landed with the Guardians just a few days before. With Tucker Barnhart and Austin Hedges now among the best remaining options available behind the plate, it would be no wonder if catching-needy teams began to explore a trade with Toronto more aggressively. The Cubs are in need of a catcher to pair with Yan Gomes after Willson Contreras left for St. Louis, while the Astros were a finalist for Contreras and had interest in a trade for Sean Murphy, suggesting they’re a candidate to weigh a trade with the Blue Jays as well. Perhaps the most interesting partner would be the Diamondbacks, who were reportedly interested in Murphy and have a handful of big-league ready, lefty-hitting outfielders who could provide some much-needed balance to a lineup which is overwhelmingly right-handed.

Yes he had a great season but f*** he's a league average bat with a terrible savant page. All of the OFs Arizona could send back in a trade have statcast numbers that are puke inducing. Even Carroll had terrible numbers and seemed to benefit from luck (xBA 221 vs BA 260, xSLG 359 vs SLG 500!). Varsho is probably peak Kiermaier with a little bit more power and a lower avg. If Carroll and Varsho are off the table, Arizona would have to fork up significant secondary pieces if they want Kirk or Moreno, or settle for 2 years of Jansen while they are not contending.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 It's just so weird that a CATCHER became such a good defensive CF instantly. I know it's 1.5 seasons of data at this point but I am still a bit skeptical Could Moreno do the same??
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Could Moreno do the same?? I think it's possible because he's in that Varsho, Realmuto camp where they are just way more athletic than a typical catcher. But I wouldn't expect him to be a good CF, that's nuts. Decent corner outfielder, or passable 2B or 3B? Perhaps.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 The whole Varsho situation is crazy because C is so high on the defensive spectrum that it's rarely worth moving a guy to a different position anyway. It's usually done in situations where the player is a bat first guy and you can squeeze a few more ABs out of him by having him play 1B or LF for 20-30 games a year. For a guy to be elite at a different important position is crazy and is the rare scenario where moving him there full time makes sense. Moreno's situation is a little bit different than Varsho's in that Moreno seems like he might be an elite defensive Catcher whereas Varsho is not. There probably isn't going to be a gain in value by moving Moreno whereas there is with Varsho.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Figured he'd be the first to go. They'll probably bring him back on a minor league deal. I can't imagine there'll be a lot of teams fighting for his services.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Say the Jays want that extra Lefty arm for the pen and miss on Taylor, would people here be cool with Moore or Chafin?

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 17, 2022 Posted December 17, 2022 Is Chapman cooked? He'll likely be too expensive.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted December 17, 2022 Posted December 17, 2022 He'll likely be too expensive. Think so? His last three seasons he's only accumulated 0.7 WAR and last season was -0.2 WAR I figured he'd be signing cheap somewhere and then trying to bounce back and prove himself again.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 17, 2022 Posted December 17, 2022 I doubt the Jays are interested in bringing Chapman the person in.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 17, 2022 Posted December 17, 2022 I doubt the Jays are interested in bringing Chapman the person in. I’d take a chance on him but I think you’re right about the Jays not wanting him.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 17, 2022 Posted December 17, 2022 I’d take a chance on him but I think you’re right about the Jays not wanting him. The guy legitimately just quit on his team before the post season because he wasn’t happy with his roll. Jays won’t bring that type of guy in. Could see him as a Dodger. They have enough star power to keep him in check.

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 17, 2022 Posted December 17, 2022 A young elite CF/OF who is a lefty bat, can also play catcher, who hit 27hrs and had 16SBs. Has shown year over year improvement. Nobody in baseball recorded more outs above average than Daulton Varsho. Dalton Varsho would make the team much better then it was before the KK signing and even after. Smart winning team builders on this board know why he would be a great get.

He's also got 4 years of control and Arizona likely also knows how valuable he is. It's been reported he isn't available as people have already tried. I feel like catchers transition to the outfield because they're always reacting the ball flying in, reacting quickly to infield pop ups. The reaction portion of an outfielder jump equation is something that comes naturally to someone who has played catcher, but most catchers are slow as f***. We have Gabriel Moreno. He's not slow as f*** and he has a cannon for an arm. We may have Daulton on our team. A kid who came up as a middle infielder as a youth. He's a right handed bat, but he has the ability to play the outfield. We had injuries to Jansen last year, Kirk the year before. He provides cover at catcher. Our bench last year we had pieces like Biggio, Collins, Zimmer, Tapia, bradley. This year our bench could be Moreno, Biggio, Espinal/Merrifield, Jansen/Kirk to start the year. That's pretty sexy. Injuries will happen. Players who aren't available now likely will be available at the deadline. Guys like Woodruff or Burnes at the deadline will have 1 year left. If the Brewers aren't in contention it will be put your best offer to extend in front of the player or trade him time. Still having Moreno on the team could allow us to make a more impactful trade at the deadline than is available now. I like the position we are in now.

Saving your bullets to address team needs at the deadline is always a good option, even though deadline deals are generally more expensive for the buyer. Jays might be wise to simply add Wacha as a dependable 5th starter, use Kikuchi as a swingman, and White as AAA depth. This would push Richards to the end of bullpen depth chart, with Pearson and others knocking on the door.
