John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 MLB radio was doing a thing over the past few weeks where they commented on who would be on each MLB team's Mount Rushmore. I did not hear who they put on theirs for the Jays but thought it might be interesteing to see what we all think, given the fairly short history of the Jays in the overall MLB landscape, not to mention what people might think of who really qualifies to be on it. Longevity? Great players hwo played for a short time? Defining moments? For me, 2 of the 4 spots aren;t really arguable. Dave Stieb and Roy Halladay. I can't imagine anyone who would do this exercise and not have those 2 names included. Past them... I have Carlos Delgado and Roberto Alomar. My reasoning is Alomar, while not a Jay for the longest time had both incredible moments, won 2 World Series and is the only Jay hat wearing member of the Hall of Fame (also, f*** you Brandy Halladay... and sorry for your loss). Delgado for me is just because he's a friggin beast with the bat, played here quite a while and was universlaly loved. Who's on it for you?
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 George Bell, Jose Bautista, Josh Donaldson all have cases (Donaldson would be a lock if he were here longer, that's for sure...).
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 Im only going to speak on players i actually saw play so ill say Halladay/Delgado/Bautista/Alomar. Shout out to Edwin and Donaldson. I didn't see Stieb or anyone before that.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 Stieb, Alomar, Halladay, Bautista. My reasoning being one player per decade/defining era for the team and those four would be the face of the franchise for their respective eras.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 Stieb, Halladay, Bautista, Fernandez. Could replace Fernandez with Delgado but no playoff games hurts his cause (even though Halladay doesn't have one either).

Laika Community Moderator Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 Donaldson is on mine over Alomar.

That would be mine, Delgado comes off by Vladito at some point barring health. So Stieb, Halladay, Robbie and Carlos easy for me... Tony Fernandez is close, loved that guy, RIP to him and Doc, respectively.

Basically by 2015 they both knew they were getting fired for that mess, didn't give a crap about anything long term and went nuts offseason and deadline 2015 and gave us that amazing run.

Key22 Verified Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 Shout out to 1992 WS MVP Pat Borders - Kind of the unsung Blue Jay. 9 for 20 was pretty good for a mostly no bat catcher. Shout out to George Bell MVP for the Jays in 87 and he was on the team for at least 8 years. I would want players who were longer-term Blue Jays. He was also in the MVP running 3 other times with the Jays. Alomar's 5 years were terrific but I don't feel like he would be the kind of player you would put up as a face of the franchise so talent-wise yes he was great but being a douche-bag and a short run here is enough to drop him in favour of Tony Fernandez who kept coming back and seemed to get a little bit better every time he returned. Halladay, Steib, Bautista, Delgado (Fernandez my runner up). Steib should be in the HOF if Morris is in the HOF. Dave Steib for the 1980s in all of baseball Strikeouts (7th) 126 ERA+ (7th) 92 Complete Games (5th) Wins (2nd) Innings Pitched (2nd) 27 Shutouts (1st) WAR (1st for pitchers) and 8th overall and all 7 position players ahead of him are all in the hall. Started both the 83 and 84 all star games - 6 time all star I mean I am sure we can find worse Hall of Famers no? The Man Who Lost 4 No-Hitters In The 9th Inning

I'm still mulling the last 2 over, lots of excellent candidates after those two.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 Roy Halladay, Roberto Alomar, Jose Bautista, Dave Stieb. Also, would have Delgado or heck even entertain having Joe Carter for hitting that big home run haha.

I actually think there's 3 that have to be on every list: Halladay, Stieb and Bautista. I can't see an argument for leaving Jose off, he became an icon here. The fourth guy is tough. Alomar didn't play here long but his impact was enormous and he's still involved with the org (unless he did something? Idk. Think I remember him committing some female harrassment/assault, though doesn't detract from him as a player). Delgado, Encarnacion, Donaldson and Tony Fernandez are the other options. Maybe slip George Bell in there too. I'd probably opt for Delgado, personally.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 Mike Sirotka How can you be on that without throwing a single pitch for the org? Mount Trashmore starts with Joe Carter, the most overrated player in Blue Jays history. John Cerutti, Jesse Jefferson, Ricky Romero, Chris Carpenter (lol), Alfredo Griffin, JP Arencibia, Ed Sprague. Mine would be Carter, Cerutti, Griffin, Arencibia

I see what you are saying about Alomar not playing here long but bc he also didn’t play anywhere else long the Jays are his main team and that counts for something. Also, you gotta have a 92-93 guy on the team. Stieb doesn’t really count for that. So Alomar is in for me. It’s hard to leave Delgado off though.
Maine Jays Verified Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 John Mayberry, Roy Lee Jackson, Jim Clancy, Alfredo Griffin that would have been my eight year old version's list from when I started watching Delgado, Halladay, Stieb, Tony F difficult to leave Bautista and Alomar off, not to mention Carter I know he's not considered a great player by today's WAR standards, but that HR is easily one of the five happiest moments of my life
