Raptors only on SN1 effects those numbers but still that’s a massive haul for the Jays

To be fair, its the timing too. 1pm timeslot has virtually 0 competition, and many people are working from home.

Raptors are massive regionally (GTA pretty much) with some fans sprinkled here and there throughout the country whereas the Jays are massive nationally. There is no comparison there and I'm saying that as a Raptors fan first and foremost.

That's got to be at least somewhat by design. The Raptors really went for the local audience with the marketing about 'the six' and locally themed jerseys. They also really focused on fans of rap and hip hop with the Drake association. That was never going to attract fans outside of major urban centres. They tried to branch out with 'We the North' but it ended up being a point of humour in the rest of the nation since it comes from the Southernmost part of Canada.

The Jays have always leaned into the 'Canada's team' angle and I think it's really paying off. We hate stuff like the maple leaf hats and whatnot, but I see them everywhere. Here in Northern Ontario I see at least 20 items of Jays apparel for each Raptors one and it's similar in the prairies. The sold out Mariners games are a stunning example of the team"s national appeal. You hardly see anything from the team about the city of Toronto itself. It's less relevant to the team's success than any other pro sports team I can think of.

I think it's more about demographics than marketing intent. The Jays have a lot of older fans (not kidding, my grandma loves them) and the Raps have a lot of young fans and immigrant family fans. Give it 20 years and the Raps will not be so regional.

Part of it has got to be the marketing as well. My grandfather is a former sports reporter and loves baseball like a lot of older Canadians, but he also loves basketball.

I think he would support the Raptors, but he's put off by the association with gangster culture, the music between segments, etc. Players have never stopped in for autograph sessions or special events like Blue Jays have. He gets NBA League Pass and watches other teams instead.

The Raptors are targeting a very specific kind of Canadian that you outlined above and have made little to no effort to reach out to anyone else. I think a lot of the blame for their lack of national appeal is their own fault. Good for the Blue Jays.

I honestly think it's the marketing Laika. My bisexual great aunt who lives in the Yellow Knife loves basketball, but just can't relate because she doesn't really see a lot woods people in the Raptors ads. Believe it or not she has a hoop, she coach's a local team of kids, and she wanted to marry Larry Bird (keep in mind she goes both ways). She was so excited in '95 when the Raptors came. However over the years though she has been turned off by the Gangster marketing. They don't relate to Gangsters in Yellowknife. She also hates the Red Sox and told me they were the worst organization in baseball and that they were gangster culture too, just like the Raptors. I didn't believe her, but then it turned out David Ortiz got shot because he was hanging with too many Gangsters. Wow.

Mostly the Celtics and a more recent appreciation of the Spurs. A lot of the NBA's older fans admire Gregg Popovich in my experience.

Speaking of Marketing, the Jays are f***ing killing it in the promotions area. Seriously I've never seen so many game day promotions (and a lot of different partners, showing that businesses want to be affiliated). Plus 12 $1 hot dog nights

Now they announce a "get all 12 April games (500 level) for $59".

Thanks. If you go a little South from Yellow Knife down to Sault Ste. Marie they hate Gangsters there too. I used to live up North and went to the Sault for a basketball tournament in '93. They love their basketball but hate the gangsters. Grant knows what he is talking about. Basketball won't be popular to the Trucker-class until they market to them.

Your posts make absolutely no sense, but are strangely entertaining.

I saw like 5 different bobblehead nights. And a spiderman/bluejays figure. And tote bags and jerseys and stuff.

Love it.

The “quarter season” packages are pretty interesting too, and im considering it just to make sure I have access to the inevitable playoff tickets.

Grant being dismissed but the Jays in 10 years were moving into the premier sporting venue in professional sports. Playing to packed houses every night with the NYY/LAD payroll to boot. Raptors are 25Yo+, so it’s not wrong to question things, besides “oh give it 20 years and it’ll be ok”.

I still think Randal Grichuk would look great in a Rockies uniform. They were really looking to spending some money. If I was Atkins I would check in for sure.

I think you're probably underplaying their popularity a bit. And I feel like if those things are going to turn a person off from following the team, they probably want to cheer for a nice white bread college team and the NBA was never going to appeal anyways, regardless of marketing but because of the players. Too "urban" I imagine for that kind of person.

At any rate its worked out for them.

They're the 10th most valuable NBA team (Jays are 15th), and valued at about 800 million dollars more which is very substantial. They are literally the most valuable sports franchise in Canada.

Did anyone look into this? I think it said if the 500 level is closed, then you'll get a ticket in the 200 level? Can you transfer tickets to other family members?

No transfers, ticket holder must be present.

And I’d imagine if for some reason the 500 section is closed, these packages would all be canceled.

If the 500s are closed we’re f***ed

OK. Maybe I shouldn't be dismissing Grant. I actually had no idea Raptors weren't that popular across Canada. Could it also have something to do with the Leafs playing at the same time?

lol. Half my friends were watching Leafs in October 92 and 93 and pissed the Jays playoff runs were taking up screen time on the 24 inch TVs popular at the time.

Good news on the visa front for Yimi Garcia and Gabriel Moreno. They could join the club as early as Thursday or Friday this week. #BlueJays

I think it's more about the product than anything

Raptors have now been good for quite a while and won a championship

The Jays were an awful product for the late 90s, entire 2000s, and the first half of the 2010s. Even the competitive Bautista et al. teams were fleeting geezers.

Just now, with Vlad and co., the Jays might be putting together the type of exciting sustained winner that gets young new fans in the fold.

Posted

I dunno about that. Raptors were equally as irrelevant to the NBA as the Jays were to baseball through the 2000's. Yeah Raptors became a consistent regular season winning franchise far sooner but were bounced from contention while the Jays were getting playoff bat flips.

There was definitely a lot more buzz around the Jays in 2015-16 than the Raptors. It did swing towards the Raptors when Donaldson was shipped out and Kawhi shipped in.

Posted
I was talking about the Jays being an expansion team in 1977 and basically becoming the NYY 10 years later. Comparing that to saying Raptors in year 27 or whatever, needed 20 more years to grow

Among the teams interested in Brett Gardner: the Blue Jays. But word around the game is Gardner is still waiting to see if the Yankees will make an offer
