max silver Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 I never said Springer didn't grade out better defensively. I said the upgrade wasn't enough for me to pay an older player an extra year or 2 and an extra 8 mil a year. These are subjective matters. Feel free to disagree. I don't think either should be our priority. We need starting pitching and bullpen support along with a 3rd baseman or a short stop. Those would be my priorities. I'm intrigued by Kim....maybe just because he's the wildcard. I'd rather the team upgrade by shoring up a weakness rather than building on a strength. If Ozuna carries forward his results from the shortened 2020 season he very well may be a beast at the plate from now on, but he has less of a track record of elite production than Springer and does nothing to improve the teams defensive situation. Springer upgrades the team's defensive situation and lineup all in one tidy package. I'm super intrigued by Kim as well and think the team should be targeting him for the middle infield. For what it's worth Keith Law states that scouts he's talked to have him pegged as more of a super utility guy rather than a full time regular at short stop.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 Springer will be entering his Age 32 season. Anyone expecting him to play CF for the foreseeable future at an average to above average level is fooling themselves. Springer is a phenomenal player, but his best fit is on a team that can transition him to RF within the next year or two - where he should remain above average for a bit.

Yeah I think the Springer stuff is a little too forced. He could fit in Toronto but the fit is imperfect and he is far from the team's biggest need. It would be more prudent to be aggressive for an infielder like DJLM or Turner + a SP.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 Sorry if posted previously, but Davidi just mentioned in a post that the Jays "Made a play for DJ Lemahieu" 2 years ago. Shaw was obviously plan B. Or D/F...
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 Slim, gun toting Vlad about to shock the world next season.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 Slim, gun toting Vlad about to shock the world next season. I think that was the main part of the "ammo clip" pic people were ignoring. He looked a lot thinner. Cant wait to see him next year. If he could play 3B then that would open up a lot of things for us. Tellez can play 1B and we can rotate guys through the DH spot.

More importantly, you could use the money earmarked for a 3B upgrade and spend it on another need like CF or pitching.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 Does anyone have even a sliver of confidence that Vlad can play 3B? Even a much slimmer Vlad. He sucked in 2019. Like, really sucked.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 More importantly, you could use the money earmarked for a 3B upgrade and spend it on another need like CF or pitching. I'm incredibly skeptical that Vladdy Jr. could ever play anything other than a very poor third base regardless of the shape he gets into, his instincts on the infield are just awful. Maybe the weight loss allows him to move better than a pregnant walrus but I would sincerely hope the club has a backup plan for third base in the likely case Vladdy can't effectively man the position.

Like, really sucked. I dont but I love the attitude at least lol. Ive never see a player who can't play 1B move to another position and have better success there, usually they become DHs. It was crazy seeing the amount of mistakes at 1B like dropping simple pop ups. I guess mistakes like knowing when to go for a ball and when to cover the bag could get eliminated. Also his ability to catch short hops and stretch sucked too.

That's something for the front office to decide, but if they are confident then you could go for a guy like La Stella at 5-8 million as a backup plan instead of spending big on a more high profile addition.

Like, really sucked. Yeah Vlad honestly just needs to put all of his efforts into improving his launch angle to become the monster hitter he has the ability to be. Hopefully being in better shape allows that but I have no confidence in him being anywhere close to an average defender at any position.

Yeah he'd fit in very nicely with the front office preference for versatility. Decent defender across the infield (aside from short stop), low strikeout/high on base, etc.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 So we are already at the "best shape of his life" stage of the offseason huh? That usually doesn't start until spring training.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 Vlad's been in such bad shape for his entire life that it sounds like every pound he loses from this point forward puts him into a new "best shape of his life" scenario.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 So...Vladdy says he was at 280 this past season. Does that mean he's at 268 now? I'm curious what he started Spring Training at. If they say 250 then he's a lost cause with getting in shape and they're just going with the standard '250 is the max we'll report Vladdy at.' I hope to hell he comes in below 250...and that's not really asking for a lot.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 I have zero confidence in his ability to play 1st base long term, let alone 3rd base. I also have zero confidence in his ability to get to a reasonable weight (240 lbs?) and to keep it off for more than a few months. I'm happy to see he's acknowledged he has a problem - it would be great to hear him acknowledge his hitting has also been s*** and that he needs to start taking his career seriously, put in his work, learn the art of hitting and get better.

So my interpretation of that is he's 248 now, had been as high as 280 (after returning to ST 2.0)
Ziggyy108 Verified Member Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 I obviously want Vlad to be in the best condition he can next year, but even if he's able to make huge strides there I never want to see him at third again. The front office has consistently talked about upgrading our defence when speaking about our position group.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 Vladdy Jr lost 32 pounds The reports I've seen say 12. Maybe 32 since Camp #2 started, and 12 of that since the end of the season? Either way....he can't stop now. His ass will always be big but that fat gut has to go.

I think the reports of him losing 30+ pounds are since the beginning of ST 2.0, and he's lost something like 10-15 lbs this offseason already. (allegedly)

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 They need to keep Vladdy away from Abuela.
Ziggyy108 Verified Member Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 What do you guys think a Lindor trade looks like? Likewise, if the Indians are really looking to dump cash ... What could a potential Lindor + Carrasco deal look like?
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 I don't see what leverage CLE could possibly have. A whole bunch of teams want Lindor because he is an amazing player. One might call that leverage.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 I'm not even sure if CLE wants to pay Lindor's salary next year. They sure as hell won't give him away for nothing though.
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 Probably similar value to Betts. Price being in that deal skews things a little, but gotta imagine its right around what the Dodgers gave up.
