BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 27, 2020 Posted June 27, 2020 One guy I forgot to include is Brendan McKay. 2017, 4th overall. That’s one guy that could break the trend, we shall see.
Key22 Verified Member Posted June 28, 2020 Posted June 28, 2020 I never really understood the Asa Lacy hype, picking a college lefty that high while talent like Austin Martin was on the table didn’t make sense to me. Highly picked college lefties (1-10) have historically not reached their hype from the draft. David Price was the one exception but he was the first overall pick and a generational talent. Year / #overall pick 2019: #7 Nick Lodolo - meh 2016: #6 A.J. Puk - undetermined 2015: #6 Tyler Jay - bust 2014: #3 Carlos Rodon - nope, not near the hype 2014: #8 Kyle Freeland - good 2012: #9 Andrew Heaney - bad 2011: #2 Danny Hultzen - bust 2010: #5 Drew Pomeranz - meh 2009: #7 Mike Minor - mostly bust, recently OK at age 31 2008: #4 Brian Matusz - bust 2007: #1 David Price - GOOD 2007: #4 Daniel Moskos - bust 2007: #6 Ross Detweiler - bust My only concern about martin is the fact that he fell to 5th could mean that those 3 teams think Martin is overrated. If the Jays didn't pick him at 5 how far might he have fallen? I would think that a possible star position player holds more value than a possible stat pitcher. And when drafting pitchers it seems to be more risky than position players as your list notes. I understand a team valuing SS above other positions but Martin seems to have been regarded by some as the best overall talent in the draft who can play an up the middle position (a projected 5 tool player at SS, 2B or CF). 4 teams passed on that. Did we (Jay's brass) miss something here?

Don't forget that the Orioles, Marlins, and Royals are three of the worst front offices in baseball.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2020 Posted June 28, 2020 This was a weird year and historically the weirdest draft in baseball history, despite the strong draft class. With only 5 rounds, a few teams were thinking the whole picture. Teams don’t always make decision based on best player available (even though they should), there’s many examples of this in past drafts and even other sports. Orioles had a pre-draft agreement with Kjerstad and wanted Bitsko at 30 (TB took him), Marlins pre-draft deal with Meyer. Royals drafted best pitcher available (and fits need for LHP), and Blue Jays took best position player available. Scott Boras might have a little to do with it. I heard Martin wanted full-slot or over to sign with Baltimore, which didn’t please the Orioles front office. There were murmurs of the O’s inquiring about under-slot deals a month leading up to the draft. If the Marlins took Lacy as expected, Royals would’ve took Martin. If the Blue Jays took Zac Veen, Seattle would’ve took Martin. By every baseball publication and ranking available, Austin Martin is a top 2 player in this draft. I personally prefer him over Spencer Torkelson.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2020 Posted June 28, 2020 Nice to see he didn't put his head down after the Jays drafted him. At 1st glance I thought he was pissed to go to Canada. Seeing him like that before the pick makes it about being shocked he's falling and just wanting to get the stress over with.

Aside from the lost money, which is obviously significant, he basically got the best case scenario for both his near term and his future by falling to the Jays. They have by far the best chances of becoming a contender out of those top 5 picks (all of the other teams are hot garbage) and have by far the best projected lineup to make his offensive numbers look better down the line.

And if he’s as good as advertised, we’re more likely to pay him $$$$ than the Orioles or Marlins. Not to mention the two positions he’s good at (3B/CF) is pretty wide open long term.

Absolutely. Best possible outcome for him in the top 10 teams, and he's playing with an old friend in Bo, who's also someone very similar in personality and drive. I think it's perfect for him without needing to be a homer about it. And if he’s as good as advertised, we’re more likely to pay him $$$$ than the Orioles or Marlins. He's good enough to move back to 3B if Groshans doesn't pan out (boo on me for even thinking that!)
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2020 Posted June 29, 2020 Guys, Groshans is being developed as a SS. Everyone needs to stop writing him off the position until it becomes apparent that the team is moving him elsewhere. Yes he's a big boy, and scouts love to automatically write guys like him off as corner infielders, but he could be a better SS than Bo when all is said and done. Worrying about positional fit for guys in the low minors is dumn, if they're good and athletic the team will find a way to fit them in, or move them for top tier established pieces at positions of need.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2020 Posted June 29, 2020 Let’s just end this madness and have four shortstops in the lineup, three in the outfield. shortstop, left shortstop, center shortstop, and right shortstop.

Slade Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2020 Posted June 30, 2020 First Boras guy to sign, Mets went hard paid him $1.5MM over slot. Torkelson is expected to sign soon and I'm sure Martin around the same time.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2020 Posted June 30, 2020 RIP Torkelson Wow, people getting covid from those draft parties? Who could've seen that coming?
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2020 Posted June 30, 2020 Wow, people getting covid from those draft parties? Who could've seen that coming? No doubt, they should have taken them to the streets where the virus stays away from! Am I doing it right?

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2020 Posted June 30, 2020 Perhaps the best all-around offensive talent to come out of Draft in 20 years. We're just going to pretend that the Bryce Harper hype never happened?
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2020 Posted June 30, 2020 BA graded Torkelson 60 hit / 80 power straight out of the draft. If we’re pegging him as the next Mark McGwire I really don’t think he’ll live up to the hype. He’s not better than Pete Alonso offensively in my opinion. Defensively, sure.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2020 Posted July 1, 2020 We're just going to pretend that the Bryce Harper hype never happened? Yeah that is a ridiculous statement. The likelihood of him being superior to a Bellinger, Betts, Machado, Harper, Yelich or how about Mike f***ing Trout is slim to none. What does "all around offensive talent to come out of the draft" mean? That he's recognized that way? Obviously Mike Trout is the best all around offensive player to come out of the draft in the last 20 years. What a stupid statement.

My mind went to Trout as well, but I assume Callis is referring to the fanfare at the time of the draft; Trout was not as highly regarded at the time. Having said that, there's just no way Torkelson is as hyped or as heralded as Bryce Harper was, as you guys said.

You got your BA defenders, and then some guy asks "who was the best talent to come out of the draft prior to Tork?" and some guy answers Pat Burrell lol. Callis didn't say anything about hype. He flat out said "best all around offensive talent to come out of the draft in 20 years." The fact that BA missed on Trout, Bellinger, Betts, Yelich in this way is irrelevant. Each is a far better offensive talent to come out of the draft in the last twenty years. The false sense of bravado these scouty types have really rustles my jimmies.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2020 Posted July 1, 2020 The Nationals literally picked two of the most hyped prospects ever in back to back years, they have lived up to expectations, and are still in the primes of their careers, and every single year scouts will describe some current draft pick as "the best we've seen in years". This was only 10 years ago too, so you'd think with how old most of them are that they would remember this.

This is ironic too coming from Callis, the guy who's too "conservative" to put HoF comps on first round draftees.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2020 Posted July 1, 2020 Bryce was hyped as baseball's LeBron. No way Tork is on that level of prospect.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 1, 2020 Posted July 1, 2020 There's what he typed and what he meant - not necessarily the same thing. Callis probably just means best present offensive talent (hit/power) at the time of the draft. Being said, I'm not even sure there is separation between Torkelson and Andrew Vaughn.

I'd buy it if Trout was like, say, Bellinger, who kinda came out of nowhere to be a top 5 player. However, out the gate Trout was putting up monster numbers and he never stopped. I'm not really sure what Callis means, but if he's referring to hype, wrong (Harper) and if he's actually referring to best offensive talent drafted, wrong (Trout, among others)
